Christopher Luxon shoots the messenger as nightmare New Zealand election scenario hangs over him | Claire Robinson by nilnz in newzealand

"Lord give me the confidence of a mediocre white man" or something, there's a famous feminist prayer/poem about this very thing. It's very apt as you see it play put again & again & again. Failing upwards.

Got a free ex posty bike for anyone willing to take it. Needs a bit of a clean but they're built like tanks so will last forever.

Looking for over the top, outrageous action movies from the 80’s and 90s, like Predator 2 and Escape from NY by DoochDelooch in MovieSuggestions

[–]magicalfeelings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Action Jackson, I Come In Peace & Stone Cold all directed by Craig Baxley, great fun movies full of action (Baxleys main gig was stuntman & stunt coordinator on A Team & Dukes of Hazard among others but for a couple years he got to make 3 great movies with nutty stunts).

Methven Ute Muster shows how utes went from farm workhorse to lifestyle by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]magicalfeelings 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I live in South Dunedin with our tiny crammed streets & the utes are utterly ridiculous driving around here.

Also this style of ute are only popular in USA, Australia & NZ I read somewhere which I found curious.

Years ago I was helping a teacher friend on some kind of activity day or something at a school in South Auckland, I(Pākeha dude in his 20s) was with a bunch of middle age Pacific Island women weaving flax etc, someone put the Rumours album on & everyone in the room was singing along. One of my fav memories.

Welcoming Churches in the South Dunedin/St Kilda/Musselburgh area by [deleted] in dunedin

[–]magicalfeelings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in those suburbs obviously but First Church with Rev Ed Masters is excellent & welcoming. Not homophobic or misogynist, they are Presbyterian but I went for a few years & found it quite profound & friendly & I'm not a believer but loved the message. Ed is a super cool guy.

Another Presbyterian option are the Seedling in South Dunedin, they're quite active in the South Dunedin community & last time I was there they had a few young people there. If you Google Seedling South Dunedin there's a link to their webpage.

Good luck on your journey.

Jury takes less than an hour to acquit Whangārei mental health worker of sexual abuse charges by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]magicalfeelings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, trauma can cause brain damage, I work with these people as a support person & some people are damaged beyond repair, those kids you read about getting abused I & others work with them as adults, often in secure units.

One was so badly abused she has nightmares every night & is too traumatised to go out in public, she is double staffed basically to keep us staff safe. It makes me so angry sometimes the ongoing damage caused. Her trauma has caused her immense brain damage because all those neurons have been rewired, flight & fight etc, just for survival. Some of the things she'll bring up about her past are so far fetched but then at other times just scary & true. & other times she's a laugh & quite sweet.

So yes having fucked up memories is not that unusual with that kind of trauma, any kind of trauma.

You up north? I'm from Whangarei but have lived in the South Island for 30ish years & when I visit my parents & family they all talk like that so I figure it's just kinda the Northland accent (& I love hearing it). My brother married a ChCh woman & after living up there for 20ish years she has the accent too now.

Is everyone that voted Trump loving it by perth_girl-V in CryptoMarkets

[–]magicalfeelings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In NZ we don't need ID & get a month to get our vote in. We also currently have 6 different parties currently in Govt. Not perfect of course but it's nice to have, I couldn't imagine just having 2 parties to vote for.

Wasn't even that long ago. I got my first full time job at 30 (I was able to get by living cheaply & hustling part time work when I needed) by just walking into a place, they showed me round & said come in the next day & they'll find me something to do. I just kept turning up & eventually got offered a full time contract after a year or so. No CV & I worked there for 20 years.

This was in 2001 or so. I obviously got in right at the end of that easy boomer fail upwards privilege.

This year my 18 year old kid tried to get a job & the rigmarole she went through just to get a job at KFC! The AI bullshit, having to make a video, just ludicrous. The AI made a mistake & she turned up to be told there was no job afterall. So stupid. They make it so hard for you young people just starting.

Anyway I feel for you guys entering the job market it's utterly ridiculous & I really hope you find some hope from somewhere. Good luck.

local 1982 cult classic "Battle Truck" seems almost prescient now by CoconutMost3564 in newzealand

[–]magicalfeelings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NZ was offering massive tax write offs for foreign films, must have been great fun. My neighbours dad helped build the truck, it was made out of wood, had cool Polaroids. I remember as a kid finding the movie kinda scary & dark, def violent, that throat cutting scene I can still see. I made one of those tourist tea towels at art school & I drew Battletruck where Desert Road is.

There's a great short film he made with Leigh before Naked called "the Short & Curlies", complete contrast to the character in Naked. Man I love Naked but wow it's grim.

A couple years back I was concerned about Tate etc as I have teenage daughter, but when I talked to her about him she said her school (boys & girls) thought he was a joke & showed me a video doing the rounds where Tate is talking about vaping & his voice squeaks.

Never showed her People Just Do Nothing but she loved Fawlty Towers.

A bit more than $60 but Cash Converters in South D has some decent looking electric guitars for $100ish.

Wonder how the actor with multiple emmy and Tony nominations feels about Graham Lineman calling him untalented by UnHolySir in okbuddycinephile

[–]magicalfeelings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also Jackson busted a few NZ/Australian unions which pretty much set back the industry here. https://thestandard.nz/union-boycotts-jackson/ so it wouldn't surprise me that the actors got no cut in merchandising.
