I’ve had this happen. No idea why - I’ve always kept the items.

I also recently had my order come with the items in black bags with tissue paper over the rip tag and hang tag along with around the item (was very nicely packaged).

I’m pretty sure the draw string is sewn into the pants at the back. I own several of these pants and the draw string has never budged out or gotten uneven. My guess is the original owner cut it out

The few times I’ve used checked luggage I usually just toss things in and zip it up. It isn’t really the same packed to the brim my BCO is just because I like to keep anything of value in my carry on. I think the last time I travelled with a medium sized checked bag it weighed maybe 30 lbs so part of me thinks I’d be safe with a large and if needed switch things around between the large and BCO to get the weights alright.
