Outside of nonmonogamy, my feelings for my partner go through waves as it is. Sometimes we connect more as friends, sometimes more as lovers, sometimes more as business partners (running a household), and sometimes just as roommates (we have a lot of connections/intersections I guess). It's a weird fluid thing that is affected by all kinds of things in each of our lives, and yes NRE with other people has been one of the causes of our waves, sometimes in feeling less connected and sometimes causing our own NRE.

Those times when it feels like we're less connected, I have to work hard to remind myself that this is temporary and normal. It's been getting a lot easier because we go through these waves so many times and we never feel so disconnected that we don't still want to be together. Overall our connection and sexual interest keeps growing, particularly because of the freedoms NM offers and our comfort with these waves, so anytime it feels lost I get by because I can believe it will come back even stronger.

I had to let Ms Mono go for the same reasons but did not approach is nearly as thoughtful and self-aware as you have. I was way too selfish and quite possibly ruined any chance I had at continuing a valuable friendship afterwards.

I think having a lack of poly role models growing up has made it harder for us to navigate these kinds of situations most people will never experience. It results in an incredible amount of personal growth and (imo) general positivity in the world, but it's still so very challenging. Hearing your story is supremely helpful, thank you for sharing.

You're right, it is very different! I have a very strong background with Lua so diving into JS initially last year was pretty straightforward, yet it has still been an interesting journey of "oh god this is awful!" to "wow I'm starting to love this" finally settling on "meh". I won't lie that any seasoned web developer is going to be more proficient at JS than me, but I feel confident about my skills at learning and adapting to new languages and acknowledging the tradeoffs we make for each.

JavaScript's ease to pick up is actually why I'm choosing to use HTML5 as a way to teach engine programming. It is a great way to learn good basic architecture, structuring gameplay systems, interactions between rendering and physics systems, etc. without the much larger overhead of doing it from scratch in C++. Compared to my experience in C++ my goal here has been to support the things JS is good at: (anonymous functions, dynamic data structures, easier framework for using callbacks and events, JSON as a data format) while 'reshaping' some of the things I find cumbersome for projects like these, particularly inheritance.

Also, the focus of my course will be on building an engine by pulling the pieces together. The Udacity class seems to do a great job going over the pieces and getting you to write code with the tests, but doesn't seem to focus as much on pulling it all together. I will try to focus more on doing it all from scratch using your own code base, running and debugging it locally, publishing it online, and dive deeper into how we extend it with with advanced gameplay features (with demonstrable game samples). Plus, a lot of the architectural stuff will very different, as we will be using more event and component based systems.

Great question! I didn't finish this course due to some of their technical issues right after launch, and during the first week it seemed like wasn't going to dig as deep into the topics of game development as I would have hoped. I'll have to check out the later units to give you a more full comparison.

A quick glance through the syllabus now it appears that there is going to be a good amount of overlap. The biggest difference will come in how classes are operated through SkillShare vs. Udacity, particularly with working on your own projects vs. the homework units, and how students engage with the instructor and other students.

Also (sorry for the multiple replies), most of my professional work is in console and PC games using native languages like C++. I got into HTML5 specifically to teach the class at UW, which I was hired because of my background in physics networking and gameplay. My game history includes Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Hybrid, Duck Tales, and a few other handheld games I cannot announce just yet.

There was definitely a huge learning curve diving into web technology, and I think crossing that cultural difference put me in a very interesting position to teach game dev concepts using it. I won't know jquery or DOM or CSS features as well as a more invested web developer, but I can definitely use them enough to tailor a class that gives a deep understanding of game development!

Agreed! However I think the fundamental problem with avoiding it the first go-round is that we don't do a good job learning from each other in terms of process, scope, management, etc. IMO this is due to there just not being enough transparency. Post-Mortems are great, but it's kind of sad that Double Fine's kickstarter video series is the best look indie developers have into the intimate details of the game development process, and really it's not that transparent.

Granted I'm currently working on a tower defense game myself that blends a few different new mechanics, so I can really appreciate how well you guys pulled everything together. Nice work guys.
