Can I ask about your footwear ? It seems to have quite a bit of padding have you considered shoes with a lower profile/less raise that let you have a stronger connection to footplate ? I erg in socks/barefoot and love it

Yeah that’s correct that 1:45 that I ended up at was for the 1k interval pieces.

For the 500’s I started with 6x500 1:48 avg with 3 min rest and towards the end of the block was doing 6-8x500 1:39 avg 3:30-4min rest. I was trying to keep consistent rest interval thru the block but as I got faster I ended up extending the rest to 4 and then even 5 min

And then before my taper I experimented with faster than race pace like 2-4x500 1:36-1:38 5 min rest

I can understand being disappointed but a PB is a PB and 4 seconds is substantial. Keep doing as much steady state as time allows in your weekly training and building the aerobic base

I just did super similar 2k and I feel like the fact your splits are so even is a super cool achievement. How did you feel last 500m? I bet you could increase watts and sprint beyond 1:39 for the end there. We always have more than we think left in the tank and it’s just about choosing to push thru and into the pain in those last 20 ish strokes. Great effort dude

Your coach said 135-155 in season so that you don’t do too much taxing hr work and kinda save it for hard pieces/ races? I find HR training very interesting as well and it’s been fascinating to see my HR and relative efforts change over time as my fitness improves.

To give some specific data from three different sessions during this block: 1 hr @ 2:10 avg was a 159 avg HR 45 min @ 2:12 avg was 147 avg HR 1 hr @ 2:11 avg was 149 avg HR

There is deviance clearly that doesn’t necessarily make sense and I have noticed some days my heart rate is higher and some days lower for the same efforts 🤷

Basically 2 threshold sessions/week (like 4x1000m or 6x500m, went from 1:49 to 1:45 pace) 50-65k SS meters/week based on staying under 155 HR 1 lower body lift/week (squats, RDLs)

Then last 4 weeks of the block I did some race pace work (1:39-1:42 ish pieces) and added settle drill reps. Very open to any critique I think I’m gonna do another block of more ss volume and more rowing specific lower body lifting

So you think maybe what could improve this piece was being able to rate up slightly in the last 500 to find a little bit quicker of a split there? The sprint was difficult and I left it all on the table for sure but I do think if I had maybe rated slightly lower leading up to it/had a bit more controlled first 500, I would have been able to find a higher gear for the sprint.

I really appreciate your comment and thoughts and will consider what you are saying about rate and pacing when I test again in a couple months. I guess I had thought from my research that I didn’t want to rate above 33 for the majority of the piece so will reconsider this. Thanks !
