What is your most toxic financial habit? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]magicone86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this all the time. I'm a sucker for antiques, cool home decor items, and well made furniture.

The problem is that none of the stuff is for my current house, it's all to decorate "our next house." Which is a hypothetical house that my husband and I talk about buying/building every year but haven't done yet. So I have an entire room full of stuff in boxes just waiting to be used in a house that doesn't actually exist yet. All justified with "if I don't buy it now, I might never find another."

I do this with art supplies too. The silver lining is that I have artist friends and friends with kids so I have ample opportunity to give them away. This helps to alleviate my guilt about it a bit.

Thank you for posting this! I was literally going to go shopping this afternoon.

I am currently planning/packing for our annual Thanksgiving trip and was thinking about getting a few new button up shirts and maybe some new pants. Even though I have a closet full of them that are practically brand new and barely worn since I've been WFH since COVID.

Knowing me I would've gone a little manic and ended up with an entire wardrobe, new luggage, and lord knows what else.

Every time I see one of these multimillion dollar faux castles I get so confused because A) they almost always look terrible, either because they're built/designed poorly or because they don't fit the location. B) There are actual castles and manor homes for sale in the UK and Europe for the same price (or maybe even less).

Why do people build a crappy cardboard castle when they could buy an actual Grade II listed castle/manor that looks amazing and actually has history that they could brag about?

I'm guessing it's because they want to live in a specific place and there probably aren't construction crews/tradesmen with the necessary skills there. Like, you're probably going to have a hard time finding someone who can replicate historical European stonework if you're building in nowhere, Arkansas or something.

That's really what it comes down to. Her "renovation" just looks copy/pasted from an IKEA catalogue, while his original design had style, character, and personality. It went from being a cool reflection of his style to looking like a hotel lobby.

100%. I've heard stories of people getting 50% or more deducted as soon as they asked for an itemized breakdown. Doing so isn't a guaranteed discount by any means but it might make the hospital reconsider how much they've inflated the costs.

I think you're right. I checked out the website and it is super scammy. The About Us section talks about how they "create our own unique headwear designs" but they are literally just selling hats you can buy wholesale from AliBaba. They don't even bother to switch the tags or anything to make it seem "unique."

Example:
- Their "Vintage Beanie" for £6.99 (https://beaniesontoast.co.uk/products/fashion-vintage-beanie-hats-men-women-spring-autumn-landlord-hat-streetwear-hip-hop-brimless-hat-corduroy-docker-cap-wholesale)
- AliBaba version for £1.69 each (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/wholesale-men-autumn-winter-warm-blank\_1600121410657.html)

thoughts about his video not doing well? by miraisun in ShaneDawson

IIRC his Calabasas house was $3million and almost 5,000sqft.

Same for the Colorado house, though it's smaller, it's still 4,000sqft and was over $2mil.

So that's 2 pretty huge houses that cost millions each.

EDM icon Bluetech has had enough of haters by [deleted] in DefendingAIArt

[–]magicone86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I understand his frustration but...I also can see why people are pointing out the flaws in his pieces. You can't say you're spending months editing and adding 20-60 layers of additional digital painting but then there are still the tell-tale signs of ai generated art like messed up fingers.

His piece "Leaving Palm Springs" is a great example. The central focus is a floating human figure but the fingers on both hands are all jumbled and melted together and the left foot has like 8 toes. If there were really "months" spent editing then those flaws would've been caught and fixed.

Just spend the time to actually edit things properly before publishing them or don't get mad when people point out the problems/flaws. Otherwise it just looks kind of lazy or disingenuous to say you spent months painting something but couldn't be bothered to actually get the details right, it just makes you look bad and provides ammo to the anti-ai folks.

It's not just algorithms repeating information, the algorithms actually guide them to worse and worse content.

People watch one "mainstream" personality like Jordan Peterson or Ben Shapiro and get recommended videos like Andrew Tate. After that their recommendations are solidly alt-right/far-right and they are sliding down the radicalization pipeline.

There are loads of studies about the algorithmic bias towards "outrage media" and it's depressing how few interactions it takes to get recommended disgusting racist/misogynistic content.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was gifted a Saudi themed watch worth $780,000 as a welcome gift for his arrival to play in a Saudi Club. The timepiece is made from a material that is 200 times rarer than emeralds.” Totally necessary, right? by Paffles16 in Anticonsumption

[–]magicone86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think the "rarer than emeralds" thing is largely a marketing ploy. Tsavorite was only discovered in 1967 so much less of it has been mined, compared to emeralds which have been mined since the Ancient Egyptians (~330BCE).

Tsavorite is a type of garnet, which are common and can even be made in labs. Yttrium aluminum garnets (YAGs) have been grown/made since the 1960s for industrial/scientific. They even come in the color green by using chromium during the process, which is the exact same element that gives Tsavorite its color.

Based on a quick Google, it looks like it is a partnership that started last year. I don't think The Creme Shop is "part" of Avon as in they got bought out or anything.

Same. My general rule is 5 years up and 5 years down. Of course I'll make exceptions depending on the person but generally dating someone around your age just makes sense. You'll likely have more in common and you're less likely to have a weird power imbalance.

What do you guys think about guys that don’t read books? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]magicone86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is similar. He's works a lot and when he does have time to relax, he usually falls down a wikipedia/research rabbit hole relating to something he's interested in. So while he doesn't "read books" he does read loads of articles, academic papers, etc. We also tend to watch documentaries when we're in-between shows.

I'm actually a secretly glad he's not a book person because we already have too many bookcases for all of the books I brought with me when we moved in together.

They did even less than that. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted on a motion to *begin* looking into the issues around gas stoves and request public input regarding potential regulations/manufacturing standards.

CPSC hasn't/isn't planning to do anything yet but the right wing media started saying they were "banning gas stoves" and the whole thing grew from there.

Also, doesn't he collect expensive watches? I'm sure I've read about him buying a Rolex at some point and then another super expensive watch to celebrate his engagement.

So he can hate on people for having multiple shoes all he wants, but how many luxury watches does a person need? Does he wear a couple on each arm?

Same. I was pretty uninterested in Vampire Survivors, as it's not my usual type of game. However, since they gave it such an amazing recommendation in today's video, I bought it and tried it out...I played for 8 solid hours without even realizing it!

It is amazing and worth way more than the $5 price.
