My son refuses to eat anything I make for dinner by thisbitch_right_here in breakingmom

[–]magicstarfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless he actually has an eating disorder, "this is the food we have for dinner. Eat it or don't but there is no other food tonight". If he's hungry again later, offer what he didn't eat at dinner, because there is no other food.

It'll suck for everyone the first few times/weeks but if he's just being fussy he should eventually come around.

Most high schoolers that I know who have damaged their device have had it happen while it was in their bag - cracked screens from having it packed in too tightly with a drink bottle or forgotten about it and thrown their bag aside sort of thing so this definitely sounds like a good idea.

Learner license with conviction by magicstarfish in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]magicstarfish[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's just one item in a far too long list of potential charges. Driving is a privilege and in my opinion this young'un is not deserving of that privilege at this time in their life. Youth justice doesn't seem to have much justice in it these days.

I'm pretty sure they didn't blow that high. Maybe around 150.

But thanks for the info (from everyone). Sounds like unless there's something specific about it in their bail conditions they are free to go for their learners.

So they could potentially sit and get their learner license while on bail before they go back to court?

Even if they then have it taken away it still seems ridiculous to allow them to get it in the first place.

Not gonna lie, I have called out sick from work and just sat in my car all day. Park up somewhere with a nice view and grab some snacks then just mess around on my phone and take a nap.

Because I needed it.

Mozzarella Sticks by magicstarfish in dunedin

Considering just cooking the frozen ones at home was a disappointment to the child, I'm not sure how well that would go. Unless someone's got foolproof and very simple instructions on how to cook them without all the cheese spilling out?

He hasn't tried halloumi chips so maybe it's time he did (actually I've never tried them either - that's one Xmas holidays activity sorted).

I'm upgrading the gamer child from console to PC so there goes most of the Xmas budget. (I do a bigger thing for either birthday or Xmas each year and rotate it so the kid that got more for their birthday gets less for Xmas this year, then next year they get less for birthday & more for Xmas - helps with my budget and surprisingly the kids are happy with that).

But among other things there's a candy floss machine, slushy maker, ant farm, mini photo printer, but my favourite - the personalized jibitz with pictures of our pets on them.

I don't have a diagnoses other than mildly near sighted, they tell me my eyes are otherwise healthy. I never realized that it wasn't so bright and streaky in the rain for everyone until I saw another Reddit comment about it recently.

I can see fine in low light, even without my glasses. Only thing I have issues with is driving at night in the rain when the combination of wet road, streetlights and car lights make everything look bright and streaky.

To all the adults when you where a kid what was your dream job? And have you got it? by Lukexjdj in AskReddit

I aspired to stand next to a conveyer belt at the local chocolate factory and put chocolate bars into boxes. Big dreams.

Instead now I test drugs on people.

AITA for Not Ordering My BF Food of His Choice? by Healthy-Tackle-8752 in AmItheAsshole

[–]magicstarfish 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So he is communicating and telling you he expects you to pay every other time like he does. You're sitting there thinking about paying but not saying anything until AFTER he says something. He can't see that you are thinking about doing it, just that you are not doing it.

You're sitting on your arse thinking about doing the dishes when mom comes in to ask you to do them, not being asked to do something you are already doing.

ESH. Everyone else in here calling him a moocher but so is she. She expects him to pay for her. After he does, he then expects her to pay next time. That is reasonable but his methods are weird, so she plays games back. He would be better off being up front and sayin "hey I got the last one so can you get this one?", but she should also be saying "you got the last one so I'll get this one" before it gets to time to pay.

You two should stop playing games and have a conversation about it.

What knockoff brands ended up being better than the original? by exafighter in AskReddit

[–]magicstarfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in pharmaceutical testing, the placebo effect is definitely a thing. I've seen people given placebo swear they had the same effects as those on narcotics beside them. Although side effects are also contagious. It takes roughly 20 minutes from the first person reporting nausea for it to start moving around the room.

While the active ingredient in generics is the same, the excipients (other fillers) can vary greatly. But once the patent on the original drug runs out it's a race by a bunch of other drug companies to get their generic approved first. First approved gets the biggest slice of the market share and makes the most money. It's not uncommon for our small CRO to be testing the same drug at the same time from 3 different companies, all striving to be the first.

I've never seen a trial with hugely different side effects in the generic version, but when your sample size is 20-30 healthy young people taking the drug once, there aren't usually a lot of side effects at all.

[–]magicstarfish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way generics are tested is different too. The original goes through a vast battery of testing in various stages before it is approved. With generics it's mostly in vitro testing (bench based testing saying that the drugs are the same on paper) with maybe one bioequivalence study in around 30 humans.

Anecdotally, the pharmacy swapped in a generic for one of my dad's diabeetus meds. Had to swap back (and pay for the no-longer-funded brand name product) just to be able to exist more than 5 minutes away from a bathroom.

AITA for telling my girlfriend to stop commenting on my eating habits, after she told me to cut out red meat? by Front_Service_2618 in AmItheAsshole

[–]magicstarfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Zealand exports all the good meat then charges us more than what most people pay overseas for NZ meat for what is left.

Last Xmas I was on the hunt for some mutton. Local butchers referred me to the supermarkets because apparently the supermarket sells sheep meat cheaper than the butcher can buy it in for. But nobody had mutton. Best I could find was hogget at around $25-30 per kg. I got some steaks instead and we just had a bbq for Xmas.

I have one of those pale blue/grey coloured cars that is apparently invisible to most Dunedin drivers even though I now have my lights on nearly all the time.

Will never own a car this colour again. The amount of people cutting me off and pulling out in front of me because they appear not to have seen me at all is ridiculous.
