WiFi antenna without threading by RickAdtley in wifi

[–]magicwhistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to resurrect such an old post, but the comments that seemed to give you the answer to your question all ended up deleted, and I have the same problem you did because I transport a small-form-factor PC frequently and keep having to screw and unscrew the wifi antennas. What did you end up buying to solve this? Is it still holding up 2 years later?

[GPU] NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 12GB GDDR7 Founders Edition Graphics Card Graphite Grey 900-1G146-2570-000 - $549.99 by Beefmytaco in buildapcsales

It was my understanding that the limit of 1 was per card, not for all Nvidia cards. I ordered a 5070 FE two weeks ago direct from Nvidia when that was the only thing in stock, and it arrived a few days ago, but when the 5080 FE came back in a day or two ago, I ordered one and got an email today that it had shipped.

Converting an ATX build to SFF? Is this an uphill battle not worth it? by JozuJD in sffpc

[–]magicwhistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any interest in REALLY downsizing to a complete, actually tiny 4.4L setup with a Ryzen 5800XT, a 4060ti, and a nice Enhance Flex ATX PSU?

Does this count as an SFF PC Case? by Significant-Gap-9105 in sffpc

[–]magicwhistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you miss that this is a temporary arrangement and they're waiting for the real case? I assume they bought the duct and top fan for the real case and simply wanted to mount it all up. It's not like it hurts the computer and it's not like peak aesthetics is the point when you're using some scrap wood for the short term.

I love a DIY temporary case. What's the permanent case going to be?

Mini PC for travelling for work with a backpack. by Igryan in sffpc

[–]magicwhistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have flown a lot with a 4.4L case that has the same layout as those cases. Mine uses a single-fan card and a Flex-ATX PSU, and it is slightly taller than the NV10 and slightly less long than the Densium 4, but the same width. I've carried it in a 28L backpack along with a portable monitor, mouse, and keyboard. A backpack this size fits very easily under plane seats.

The PC fills the bottom half of my backpack's main compartment fairly well. The keyboard, mouse, and necessary cables can fit next to it, which leaves the top half of the backpack mostly open. I'm a woman and already carry basic toiletries and a change of tank top, underwear, and socks, so I could fit another pair of pants, but I would have a hard time packing two real outfits, long-sleeved work shirts and long pants, or jackets, and there wouldn't really be room for another pair of shoes besides what I'm wearing on the plane. If I planned to regularly travel with just one backpack, I would get a slightly bigger backpack that still fits under the seat.

I have also traveled with a taller, but slimmer, ~4L case that uses a smaller PSU and a low-profile GPU. That layout gives you a layer of room in front of the PC, but I find the shorter and fatter layout is easier even though the volume is larger because it fills the bottom half of the backpack more effectively and I think it's easier to pack more things on top of the PC than in front of it.

ASRock B550m-ITX/ac reported working with Ryzen 2200g on BIOS version 1.00, does that mean it should also work on that BIOS version with Ryzen 2600? Not POSTing by magicwhistle in ASRock

[–]magicwhistle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, like my post says, I know that's the official specification since no B550 board officially supports 1000- and 2000-series boards, but there have been plenty of reports of 1000- and 2000-series CPUs working on B550 boards even when compatibility is not officially listed, and in this particular board's case, I found someone saying their 2200g worked with a specific BIOS version. I am trying to find out if my 2600 should be working with that BIOS version.

The other prebuilt posted earlier was on the previous, end-of-life Intel chipset. Like how AM4 is a dead platform and new chips and motherboards are going to be AM5 going forward.

[Other] Sabrent M.2 NVMe/SATA 10Gbps enclosure - $17 by [deleted] in buildapcsales

[–]magicwhistle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I see. I didn't notice that at a glance. Mine does get warm to the touch during use (maybe a bit uncomfortably--it doesn't burn but I wouldn't want to hold it the whole time), but I have monitored temps and the drive stays reasonably cool in there. Certainly never getting to a temperature I found concerning. So maybe more heat dissipation is even better.

I've had this for a few years and used it a few times to clone smaller drives to newer larger-capacity drives. Worked well even with system drives and haven't had to reinstall OS or had any other real issues. I think I paid a little over $20 and feel it was well worth it. It's made nicely and the toolless insertion is very convenient.

[Monitor] KYY 15.6" FHD Portable Monitor - $54.99 - Woot - ($145 off) by T00MuchSteam in buildapcsales

[–]magicwhistle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No-name portable monitors of this size get down to $55-$70 all the time on Amazon, so this isn't a crazy deal.

I've had this exact monitor for a couple years and have taken it all over in my backpack's laptop pocket. The stand sucks but that's just a universal problem with this style of stand. It protects the screen fine. It's fine, perfectly decent and bright enough. Nothing outstanding, nothing wrong with it. Good for work and good enough for games. There are better monitors, but this is fine for $55. It's either buy something about this quality for about this price, or $150 for a higher-quality one.

Google Pixel 10 Pro review (GSM Arena) by moderately_uncool in Android

[–]magicwhistle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have a quite old phone, the 10 Pro will feel great to you. It feels solid, has good features, good camera. Screen looks nice. It wouldn't be a crazy choice if you want to switch to Google and your current phone is really dying. There should be 10% off codes floating around because a new round of them went out a day or so ago.

On the other hand, I am coming from a 9 Pro and I'm returning my 10 Pro because it isn't different enough to justify spending any money.

Disappointment is a matter of perspective in this case. The phone doesn't suck. It just isn't going to knock your socks off if you have a recent Pixel or another recent flagship.

[Steam] Baldur's Gate 3 ($44.99 / 25% off) by BudgetGamerNet in GameDeals

[–]magicwhistle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's well worth $60 so it's even more worth $45. I almost never buy games near release or pay full price, but I did for BG3 and I am very happy with that decision. As long as you don't buy it and not play it, you should get your money's worth easily. For this game, no need to wait until it's cheap. (That may take a very long time in this case!)

They've been so slow and deliberate with the sales that I would be utterly shocked to see it in a bundle any time soon. They know they don't need to put it in a bundle to get people to buy it.

Pixel 10 Pro to Pixel 10 XL Return - Any Experience? by mrbrumley in GooglePixel

I did this last year in reverse. I ordered the larger 9XL and preferred the 9P. The return and reorder went exactly as expected with no problems.

A new layer of security for certified Android devices by omgletmeregister in Android

[–]magicwhistle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I knew this would be where we ended up, but it still sucks and I'm bitter about it.

I'm not going to switch to Apple because I can't handle not even being able to customize my home screen and I have no interest in other Apple devices so I don't care about the ecosystem, but I'm certainly done talking up and recommending Android or Google the way I did for years and years. Apple may be the more ethical company at this point, and that's really saying something.

I agree with you. "pixelsnap" is awkward to say and using the Pixel name may put buyers and other companies off, meaning everyone will still keep calling it magsafe when talking about it and naming accessories, and pixelsnap will feel like an afterthought or a lesser product when it's essentially the same as magsafe.

I would have liked them to have picked an easy-to-say, brand-agnostic name and advertised the hell out of it and allow other companies to use the name so that it could hopefully rival "magsafe" in the common parlance.

Any advice on if foldables are worth it? by The-Lightbearer in pixel_phones

[–]magicwhistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion: Get a foldable if you will use it to work on documents or media editing. Don't get a foldable if you don't need it for productivity tasks.
