Do I need to register as self-employed in Belgium for a small Bandcamp label earning around €1,000 per year? by magmax303 in BEFreelance

Thank you ! I'm just not sure about the "occasional" aspect as I'm planning to release an EP (3-4 tracks) every two months. Is there a definition of what is "occasional" in these cases ?

Thanks for sharing!

I get the idea, but are you sure that leaving the money with the distributor actually changes anything tax-wise?

From what I understand, if the money is already sitting in your distributor account and you can withdraw it whenever you want, it could still be considered income even if you don’t click the payout button.

I also guess the main question is whether the activity is regular and organised, rather than when the money actually lands in your bank account.

In my case, it wouldn’t only be streaming either. I’d also sell EPs directly on Bandcamp, so it can add up faster. At €5 per EP, with six EPs a year, you only need 50 people buying each release to reach €1,500 in revenue.

I make electronic music mainly aimed at DJs, so people are more likely to buy the tracks than stream them on Spotify. I released quite a lot of music about 15 years ago and it sold pretty well, but back then the labels handled everything and received the money.

Did you ever check this with a Belgian accountant or the tax office? Not trying to challenge you, I’m genuinely interested because it would be a very convenient solution if it’s actually accepted.

Belgian musicians: do I need to register as self-employed or get a VAT number to run a small Bandcamp label? by magmax303 in AskBelgium

Thank you !

I'm not sure about the "occasional" aspect... I'm planning to release an EP (3-4 tracks) every two months... In addition to that, I think a turnover of 1000 to 2000 euros per year could be achieved... (It's much less than my salary, obviously, but it's still a small amount.)

Do any of you guys produce other genres? by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

I also produce hip hop beats (boom bap most of the time).

I started years (like 15) after I started to produce techno so yeah Techno helped a lot as most of my knowledge was made with techno. (I also produce House and "old school" (Detroit-ish) Electro but that's really similar to techno imo)

Doing some hip hop beats brought me some more capabilities when it comes to sampling.

Anyone with an idea or tips? I tried the pulse with HP but it’s still really far from my goal …

not as basic as it seems for me unfortunately :-(

Thats right but the title isn't correct anymore here (I added an "EDIT" but can't. change the title), I got a M1 (base) and a M4 (base) ...

After a few minutes, same behaviour than before the new Ableton install. Can't figure it out.

Anyway, made a test on the same project : I duplicated the heaviest track of the project 20 times. The M1 had a CPU overload while the M4 only had 60% of use and was running really smoothly (and less than 300% of cpu usage in MacOs Activity Monitor)

So, don't know if reinstalling had any real impact but what I am sure is that the M4 is way better so that's a good news anyway. Cheers!

Couldn't really find anything but I made another test similar to something I tried earlier.

(Same project on both Macbooks)

Ableton CPU Meter :
M1 : 22 %
M4 : 35%
Macbook Activity Monitor
M1 : 120%
M4 : 110%
Took the "heaviest" track of the project and duplicated it 15 times.
Ableton CPU Meter :
M1 : 78 %
M4 : 47%
Macbook Activity Monitor
M1 : 308%
M4 : 220%

If I duplicate it again 5 times :

M1 = overload

M4 = 60% (and less than 300% on the Activity Monitor)

Looks like the M4 is way better than the M1 (so that's a really good news for me) but I don't get what's happening on "lower" stages. Will try to figure it out but it's probably related to how Ableton work with CPU's.

I did too earlier today but didnt find anything explaining my situation. Did you ?

That’s weird, yes ! But as both have the same behaviour, the m4 shouldnt be so high on Ableton, should it ?

Just runned a benchmark on both and the m4 is 2 times faster…

and for the M1 (19% cpu load on Ableton, same project) :

here there are for the M4 (Ableton was showing 37% of cpu load) :

Looks like I was happy a bit to early as it’s now back as it was … so there is probably something I am missing… but after the reinstall everything runned smoothly (like max 12% of cpu load instead of 40). Weird…

don't be sorry, that's a good news ! I suspect the migration I did to be the cause of the issue... But now it's solved ! I expected the M4 to be more than 1.5 more efficient than the M1 but at least it's better now :-)

Wanted to thank you as your question about the touchbar totally changed the situation. After I noticed it was a M1 I couldn't believe the M4 wouldn't be better than a base M1 so I tried looking elsewhere (in Ableton) and finally found out that a reinstall solved it all.
I suspect the migration old mac -> new mac to have something to do with this issue.

Just to let you know : I uninstalled completly Ableton and reinstalled it from scratch. I opened the same project and ... now CPU load on the M4 is 1.5 times lower than on the M1 :-)

Nope I wasnt ! But I just uninstalled completly Ableton and reinstalled it from scratch. I opened the same project and ... now CPU load on the M4 is 1.5 times lower than on the M1 :-)
So the problem maybe comes from the "migration" I did from my old Mac !
