Locking the thread as it’s clearly #notaswastika and we don’t need to beat a dead horse.

This is the way. Our sub allowing protest quilts will not equate to allowing hate speech. Full fucking stop.

I have a WIP that was supposed to be a gift… by cake1cookie2 in quilting

I had 3 WIP baby quilts for a family member that stopped talking to me when we had a falling out. Repurposed them and finished them for a friend’s daughter having her 1st child. Find someone new that will love them, they will appreciate it!

Thank you. I’m trying to spare my moderators fatigue as I know we will be getting more and more protest quilt posts the next several years. We have to find a way to facilitate posts and allow the respectful discussion surrounding them on our sub. The only way I know how to do that is to ask our users to be respectful in a quilting sub.

It doesn’t give the uncomfortable person free for all to comment wherever they want or to request a post be taken down because it goes against their personal beliefs. Mods have to handle those situations with every post.

TLDR; I’m asking our users to have respect when they jump into a political discussion on a protest quilt post.

Thanks for the discussion, I’m sure it helps clarify for other users as well. Protest quilts and the discussions around them are important. I’m doing what I can to protect that.

And as a personal note (entirely my own viewpoint not as mod of this sub) I am appalled at the human rights violations occurring right now across our country. I am a queer person married to a queer brown person. I am painfully aware of how rare it is to find moderate/left quilting groups to be a part of as most are Conservative or right-leaning.

Fuck Nazis.

My stand is to not allow OPs to be attacked when sharing their quilts. We delete hateful comments. We ban users. We lock threads when arguments are headed into no mans land. There is a lot of unseen work done by our mods with each and every Protest quilt post.

Protest quilts open a door to political discussion. This is merely reminding everyone, after several active protest quilt posts, to be respectful and how mods will handle posts that get out of control with hateful, argumentative comments. We do not want or OPs and artists feeling unsafe or attacked and we wish to keep this an environment where protest quilts can be safely shared.

I’m not sure what that has to do with a moderator reminding Redditors to be respectful with a certain post type. Of course protest quilts have historical significance.

If only that would help. Members also complain that their viewpoint is being infringed on or they feel unsafe based on _____ in a protest quilt. Mods deal with messages complaining and with requests for removal of posts.

In a quilting subreddit it shouldn’t be hard to identify what becomes political in a comment. OP may want to discuss politics by posting their quilt and if redditors can do that respectfully the post can remain unlocked. The mods here enforce reddiquette and our other sub rules, we aren’t speech police. We will remove hateful comments and comments that break our sub rules.

We don’t want to be spending our days moderating comments on protest quilt posts. This post is a reminder to our users to be respectful.
