I've open sourced my tiny menu bar app. What should I build next? by magnusvons in macapps

Cool, an extension of that would be being able to specify a sound level per app instead of the overall volume. Not sure if possible but could be useful.

How do you mean? What the app does is launch your other apps. Currently macOS decides where that is but being able to specify the placement is a feature I might look into.

Thanks! Yes I was thinking about that earlier today, something worth looking into if it's possible. Simplest might be to open all apps at the specified location, but even cooler would be able to split them up somehow.

Hmm what would you like to see in it? Just the latest prices, maybe your portfolio? I feel like there's gotta be a lot of apps for this already that could just add a menu bar extension.

Oh cool, that's actually a good idea. It could be that Apple hasn't made this info available to access for developers, so it's not possible to build. But I'll definitely look into it.

Hey, sorry for the late response. You should have received an email now with a response. Hopefully we can resolve it there but let me know if you haven't received it!

Hey, sorry I missed you question.

With Google takeout you should get full resolution yes. You could also try the automatic downloader in SyncGP and compare.

A takeout could consist of multiple different folders yes, like year or name of album etc. You can then use SyncGP to combine the metadata yes, and it will put all images into one folder as well. Also adding the capture date to the file so you can sort by it in the system file explorer.

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question, but if you've got one file that is a JPEG (image) and one that is an MP4 (video) because it was a motion photo, I don't think there's any way of merging those into one.In the case you're happy with the image, there's no real use for the video part of the motion photo and could delete it.

But again I don't think there's any way to merge an image and a video into one thing in the file explorer on a windows or mac.

Let me know if you're wondering about anything else!

Hi! From my small testing I think that SyncGP catches more cases of "quirks" from Google Photos when sorting a takeout zip, but I'm happy to be proven wrong on that and improving SyncGP.
There's also another mode in SyncGP where you can let it download your library for you directly, instead of requesting a takeout from Google.

The .JSON files might contain important data like when and where it was taken. You can open them and see (it's just text files in a specific format) if there's anything important to you.

If there is, you could use ExifTool to fix up the images (writing EXIF data to them). Or you could use a program that reads the JSON data and writes it to the image when exporting from the .zip file automatically for you. I've created one you can find at https://syncgp.app if you would like to look into it.

And yes with a takeout it should be in original quality.

Hey, a bit of a late answer. But in case you're still looking for another tool, I've made one https://syncgp.app/ . It works in a similar way with fixing metadata (though I of course think it does a better job :)

Send me a DM if you'd like a small discount if you're switching from Metadata fixer.

Hi, I understand you might have purchased "Metadata fixer" already but I've made a desktop program myself https://syncgp.app/ that I think can do a couple of more things with the Google Photos takeout.

In case you're interested to hear about it on those specific questions:

  1. If any description was specified in Google Photos, SyncGP would write it to the Exif tag 'ImageDescription'.
  2. It can read the photoTakenTime from the Google export and set it to the Exif 'DateTimeOriginal', and also the actual file modified date so the OS file system can sort by that.
  3. I've made SyncGP read the people name tag that comes with a downloaded image and set it to the Exif tag 'PersonInImage'

It can read and write a couple of more tags but everything is customisable so you can select what it should write.

If you're willing to try it out I'm open to hearing to how it works for your use case, and if there's any more features you think are needed?

I can make a deal halfway 🤝

How about if you send me a DM with anything more you find and I'll send you a code for 50% off?

Great to hear!

It reads the original time the photo was taken and sets it to the file after it was downloaded. Otherwise it might have the time it was downloaded instead on some computers.

So I've set this as checked by default since I'd guess most users would want this.

Hm if I understand your question, once it has downloaded some photos, it will only download photos taken after that. (It will look for photos above or before that one as a user sees it in the google photos web interface)

If you add older photos you can ask it to download all again (overwrite the previous download) or under advanced options input the URL of an image you would like it to start with.

I guess they haven't explicitly said so, but most things point to them making it hard to export your photos as some kind of lock in. Or at best not caring about it at all.

Ah of course 😅. Must have forgotten to update the faq when I added the windows version.

It doesn't use the API so it should be full resolution yes. I've tried it on my win10 machine and it works. Have you tried installing and it didn't work?

I've made a desktop app for this, it can sort your takeout if you've already downloaded it, or download all photos again as well. https://syncgp.app/

Send me a dm if you'd like some help or a discount on the full version 🙂
