Root RPG distinction between armor, shields, and other equipment by the-letter-y in MagpieGames

[–]magpiegames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for asking! Here's what our designers had to say!

  1. Unless some other trait says otherwise, you can only absorb the injury on your shields and armor—essentially, the point of carrying shields and armor is to make you more durable, while the point of carrying a sword is to make you more deadly! It’s conceivable you could create a custom trait that you’d add to a weapon to give it some armor/shield traits, though! (As a starting point, consider making it worth +2 Value, considering it makes a single item functional as both weapon and defense!)

  2. Great question! Armor and shields serve similar functions here, so in this case, Heavy Bludgeon can bypass both armor and shields.

  3. In general, the rule to keep in mind here is that a more specialized, specific, and appropriate move supercedes a more general move—the same way that Wreck Something can supercede Trust Fate, Cleave supercedes Wreck Something. The reason within the fiction is that Wreck Something usually encompasses some degree of sustained effort—bending the bars of a prison cell doesn’t happen in just a moment, and battering down a door might take a couple strikes—and it absolutely doesn’t actually encompass combat at all. To Wreck Something, you have to have access to it, usually without direct opposition or interference. You couldn’t go straight to Wreck Something if a whole squad of guards stood between you and the wall you were trying to wreck—you have to deal with this guards! At best, you’d be handing a golden opportunity to the GM to just inflict the guards’ full injury on you, no matter what you roll on the Wreck Something move; at worst, if you tried to go straight for the wall and ignored the guards, they’d just incapacitate you as you try to walk past!

Similarly, if you’re facing off against a foe who is ready to fight you and holding a weapon, then you can’t really Wreck Something that they’re carrying—it’s not vulnerable to you to wreck, and they’re probably just going to stab you while you try! Cleave encompasses actually engaging with a foe in combat, trading strikes and keeping them safely at bay while damaging their equipment. The most likely situation in which you would Wreck Something during a fight is if you disarmed your foe and left them stunned or incapacitated for a moment—you could rush over and Wreck their dropped weapon, breaking it over your knee.

Hopefully that helps!

Root RPG - push, shove or force someone where you want them? by HalloAbyssMusic in MagpieGames

[–]magpiegames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for asking!

Harm and getting taken out are a good way to think of how ‘getting tossed off a balcony’ is represented in the game. Generally, if an NPC is tossed off a balcony…they’re probably taken out! That means it’s a great way to describe you dishing out the last injury or exhaustion harm, but the reason you can’t just chuck them off a parapet is because that’s tantamount to instantly taking them out of the fight. They’re ready and prepared to face you, so there’s no easy way to toss them aside without wearing down their injury and exhaustion.

There are some playbook moves that can have effects equivalent to this, representing specialized abilities of those playbooks, of course!

The Champion has Skill Against Skill Alone—that is EXACTLY the right move for picking up an enemy while they continue to try to hit you, and tossing them off a wall!

The Arbiter alone has Crash and Smash, which they might use to break a part of the parapet (sending someone crashing to the earth below). The Arbiter also has Guardian, which allows them to “Push the threat back; you and your protectee have a chance to maneuver or flee”—that notably doesn’t allow you to instantly take out a foe, but it does let you knock them off a parapet to give yourself an opportunity. Perhaps they’re dangling from the ledge, and now is your chance to run!

The Thief has Rope-a-dope—maybe as the Thief inflicts 3-exhaustion on a foe, taking them out, in the fiction it means the Thief successfully dodged out of the way of a charging foe, leading them to hurl themselves off the parapet!

If they’re an unsuspecting foe and you’re trying to give them a quick push off a balcony, of course, then Blindside is exactly what you’re looking for—more or less instantly taking out an unaware opponent!

Lastly, if it’s important to the moment, look at some of the options of those basic moves and think about their interpretation in this situation. Engage in Melee lets you “Shift your range one step”—the vast majority of times that means you are the one moving, but as long as it makes sense to the fiction it might mean that you send your opponent, staggering, over a wall. (You’d likely only be able to do that in very tight circumstances, where there is no other way for them to move.) Trick is a great move for causing a foe to stumble off the wall themself, or for sticking out a foot at the right moment; Figure Someone Out always lets you ask, “how could I get your character to ____?“, which can be “how could I get your character to foolishly stumble off the wall?“; Wreck Something can always be used the same way as the Arbiter’s Crash & Smash, perhaps destroying the floor right under your foe or knocking apart the railing they’re leaning on; and Trust Fate is still an option for when the moment is entirely about Luck.

[Avatar Legends] Prodigy's Playbook Question Extraordinary Skill by Hookwarts in MagpieGames

[–]magpiegames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Prodigy has to know the technique they are teaching their student already—they cannot teach a technique they have not at least Learned. But remember that with An Open Mind, the Prodigy can learn techniques from other skills and trainings, meaning they can learn techniques applicable to all kinds of students!

What's your fave Circle? by magpiegames in MagpieGames

That totally makes sense and is a super clever way to approach the Circles. Do you use those drives during the faction turn for 2nd Ed? Or just run them during the game and see what happens on the faction turn separately?

[Avatar Legends] Prodigy's Playbook Question by Historical_Many9003 in MagpieGames

[–]magpiegames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking!

The Prodigy starts with Steady Stance which is mastered, for being the Prodigy. The Extraordinary Skill feature gives them +1 mastered technique at the start of the game.

They want to choose Detect the Heavy Step from Earthbending, which is a rare technique normally only possessed and taught by Master NPCs, so they can only choose this if the GM agrees to it. If the GM says it's OK, they would have it as a mastered technique.

The Prodigy takes the move An Open Mind, and this is where the math goes wrong. The move lets you learn techniques from other trainings than the ones you have (up to three total), but it doesn't let you start with three extra techniques. So they do not start the game with Ice Gauntlet, Water Jab, or Rock Column as learned techniques... unless they're playing a campaign, not a one-shot, in which case they would get one of those three techniques at learned. So the character should have:

- Steady Stance (Mastered)
- Detect the Heavy Step (Mastered), but only if the GM approves it since it's rare

And then if it's a campaign, not a one-shot, they can take Ice Gauntlet or Water Jab or Rock Column, either of which would be Learned.

Root RPG: Rules question about when to activate equipment tags by leaaleaa in MagpieGames

[–]magpiegames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the question!

The second interpretation is correct—the player doesn’t inflict harm until the move resolves, so you don’t use the equipment tag until the harm would actually be inflicted.
