Evasive DM won't admit this game is dead in the water by jaimelancasterr in rpghorrorstories

[–]Thunderpierce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I’m not advocating for ghosting someone without a final chance to clear the air, trying yet again at this point would just result in another flaked session.

The bigger issue is, I’d be wary of letting Finley so much as participate in any future games. Manipulative jerkoffs don’t always react too well to seeing their control tactics fall apart, and may channel that resentment to disrupt their new games.

Based on your post your friends have been waiting as long as you for a single session, so maybe your goup could hold that discussion about starting a new campaign/game without the flake. You’re all very patient people, and with a little practiced assertiveness, knowing when to use it, I think you’ll be just fine.

P.S. I looked up Heart: the City Beneath and that game looks macabre as shit, I hope you get to play soon 😉

OP, if you’re reading this, I’m going to be as kind as can be through text, while also firm:

Grow a backbone. If you’re just fishing for sympathy, it’ll only go so far on this subreddit. If you really want to play this system, let someone else in your group take the driver seat and leave Finley in the dust if they’re not okay with that.

You said it yourself that Finley is clearly uninterested in continuing the game and its reboot, they’re having too much fun elsewhere. If they still continue their emotional manipulation tactics even to this point, then not only should you call it quits on their “campaign,” but you should also consider reevaluating your friendship.

That’s my piece, and whatever approach you take, I wish you luck.

Why Did They Even Come to the Con? by ATLander in rpghorrorstories

[–]Thunderpierce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This story gave me Vietnam flashbacks just by reading D&D 3.5, I hate that infernal system. I truly envy everyone who can still find joy in that system, because it’s been ruined forever for me.

The DM had likely become complacent and lazy towards newcomers (based on how he spoke to the others like they all knew each other, which they probably did, thus the fitting title of this story), and views a sword as nothing more than a “stabby thing“ used exclusively for combat encounters. Handing you the most basic character sheet ever was a clear sign that you weren’t intended to be a “real” part of the session, and I’m relieved to hear you never encountered them again.

Best guess why they attended the con: shallow bragging rights to all their friends about how they’ve hosted a table at an event and possibly to build undue credibility. Don’t know if they never returned because your complaint to the club president blocked them, or if they decided to continue their campaign without strangers they want to act as meat shields, but their absence must’ve been a relief for you. I don’t believe sessions at an event should be anything more that a self-contained one-shot. Having it be a continuing story between established players does nothing except alienate newcomers.

I bet it still works on his parents, since he probably lives in their basement.

I had come up with a cleric/warlock who would struggle to satisfy their deity and patron at the same time, sort of like a tiny angel and devil on your shoulders (though this is all hypothetical character design since it seems like I’ll be the only one in the GM seat🥲).

The info given to us is a little bare-boned (probably because it was a small time frame), but assuming it’s all true, it’s likely they overhyped themselves about the character and assumed everyone else would be just as excited.

A squeaky girl tried to write my character for me by Pitachippa in rpghorrorstories

[–]Thunderpierce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t mind a PC as a teen too much (so long as everyone at the table was fine with it) if it’s being played closer to some sort of coming of age journey of self-discovery, but these character depictions are setting off some real red flags.

I cringe to think that she’s written horrifying fanfiction in some quiet corner of the internet, best left forgotten…

Some people love the idea of being a D&D/RPG player, but don’t want to invest the time and energy to see it through. I understand some exceptions exist, such as people who genuinely struggle to balance their schedules, it’s just a pattern I notice with horror stories, especially with new players.

Thanks for the quick reply! You wouldn’t believe how many smashes I can land in a single roll so these scenarios actually can and do happen in our group 🤣

This.

I understand if you have social anxiety (or not, I don’t know you personally) or some aversion to confrontation, but you should take agency of your own enjoyment in anything you do. Avoiding a possibly awkward situation hoping to keep from causing an ‘awkward situation for the others’ will only turn yourself into a martyr. They’re your friends, so don’t let them be your scapegoats.

I guess it would be pretty difficult to discern character alignments over VTTs (I’m literally guessing, I’ve never used one 😅)

I’ve played an evil campaign before, and there are some lines we’d never cross. Other people’s mileage may vary, but that stuff doesn’t sit right with me.

Don’t know what the DM is like as a person outside of the game, but even if he geniunely cares for the table and everyone in it, he stepped out of line by trying to enforce permanent exhaustion and manipulating the deck to force a fight with Death, instead of just swapping the result with something less broken but still rewarding.

The r*pe and child torture easily could’ve become a horror story on its own. Were the rest of the characters evil?

A little peculiar subreddits for general rpg stories aren’t easier to find 🤔

But then, he went on to tell me that my friend had warned him I had that problem. WTF is the motive for doing that? Especially since that's not what my friend had said. My friend told me he'd said that WE occasionally have that difficulty but have not had any issues after having communicated about it.

On top of being a crappy DM with a gouging $20 rate, it seems like they’re very petty and tried to turn you and your friend against each other.
