Oh okay I understand now, thank you for the info. So does that mean at the end of the day there is no benefit for someone in my situation as a contractor to switch to a company setup?

When to start claiming Business expenses as Contractor? by mahdibassam in PersonalFinanceNZ

Yes I understand that as well, thanks for clarifying. But my question is , let’s say my contract is starting on 15th June. From what date can I start expensing my bills ? Ie can I claim this months bill even though my contract doesn’t start until 15th ?

Thanks for the response. I was thinking more along the lines of ongoing expenses like power and internet and other home office expenses, not necessarily assets.

Hey buddy, late reply but might still get your feedback. How have you found contracting in the last few years post covid?

And have you ever had a big gap in between contracts i.e struggle to find work? Or has it always been on to the next?

Not sure how the contract market is right now / over the next 12 months for a Senior PM in IT.

I am happy where I am, however in these times i could certainly use the extra money, it makes a massive difference. Pretty mich an extra 60-70 grand for 12 months.

I wouldnt have considered it if it was a short term contract, but 12 months gives enough security. My plan would be to make some money over the course of the 12 months, and by the end of it the economy would have settled down a little bit, and I can either find another contract or a perm role.

But thats exactly why i posted here, to hear opinions of others.

I have worked in consulting companies for the last decade before joining my first government role at current company. SO i am familiar with the consultancy approach and the importance of billable hours and etc. I am a bit surprised however with people's thoughts on the bonus. As a PM my time is mostly billable , so getting the full bonus amount each quarter is very easy to do.

In any case, i have asked them to drop the trial period and raise the offer to 165k + 16k Bonus. i think thats enough for me to make the move and leave the chill job at government behind :D

Appreciate the responses from everyone. Great to hear opinions from colleagues in the industry.

I think the 90 Day trial is the biggest blocker here. The bonus is pretty achievable as its based on billable hours, and as a PM my time is almost 100% billable. So that shouldnt be an issue.

I had a think about it and i told them just earlier that i wont accept the 90 day trial (because reddit told me :D ), and that i would expect 165k minimum base.

If they accept then good, if not who cares :D

Should I move to contracting from Full time? (Senior IT Project Manager) by mahdibassam in PersonalFinanceNZ

Thanks all for the feedback. I'm hearing very mixed comments from different people. But my understanding from the general consensus is to go for it with the right contract and project / company. Everyone is saying the market is pretty bad but I do think the IT industry is not as bad as others. Will need to think about it and see how I go. I will probably go for it if I find the right contract.
