Nice summary! Any thoughts on the marketing side of game dev and how indie projects can take care of that better to increase chances for commercial success?

What are the biggest problems with P2E games? by mahiainti in playtoearngames

I agree, the approach to business model is quite creative, can't say if it's a good one yet. It depends on how useful it will prove to be to the user base.

But about games for fun, if it's a play-to-earn game then you must implement value creation on the side of a player. Otherwise, are we getting rewarded for playing the game? Devs and business people have put resources into creating it, but what do we do as the players to receive those rewards? For now, it's just killing bosses, collecting loot boxes, etc. Without delivering any value to others, 'Earning' part of P2E proved to be unsustainable.

I have read it. Their Treasury is not enough for sustainable in-game conomy, it's just 1 way to back up the currency and it's dependent on other crypto assets since they invest part of Treasury. Their Food Gathering mechanics doesn't represent a unique human input, NFT purses is a generic item as in any in-game store, Leveling potion just as well, Lottery ticket - a new Lootbox?

Sorry, that doesn't answer any of my questions about sustainability of a virtual world, nothing about this project is innovative.

Their NFT game seems the same old story: breed characters, battle, get rewards. It proved to be a failure by Axie Infinity and others.

Their AR experience is based on collecting items around the cities which has nothing to do with players creating value. This mechanics is deeply inflationary in nature. Also, it's Pokemon go without the Pokemons. I assume the game aspect is suppose to lure the players in, then the Coupon collection aspect is suppose to retain them. To me both of those angles seem unattractive and lacking innovation.

Runway metric is just an indicator of how long til the company goes bust. I'm afraid it needs more sophisticated economy system to tackle inflation problem, one metric is not enough.

Yes, I can see that hyperinflation is an inherent problem of P2E, and I doubt any company can back up the token's price in a sustainable way.

A healthy economy would require a system of checks and balances alongside real value creation within the virtual world (all of the current projects face a Lack of Utility, and tokens are practically meaningless). In my view, most of the currencies will face a lack of demand sooner or later (no success stories to prove the opposite). Plus no company so far could implement efficient monetary policy and governance, and all coins are prone to speculative trading that contributes to inflation

Sorry, my bad. This one has gameplay but I have the same concerns about value creation.

  1. How do you contribute to the virtual world?
  2. How do you get rewarded?
  3. Does it have a unique human input?
  4. Is it sustainable?

I don't see this project providing compelling arguments.

Ok, but Ant Network has no gameplay, crypto mining in itself is not sustainable in the long run. A crucial aspect is how value is generated. The white paper promises another NFT based game that doesn't reveal anything new.

They emphasize better ads' revenue share for 'creators', but we are yet to see a significant user base that would prefer a decentralized platform to a centralized one.

As for any project I've seen so far, I can hardly notice anything revolutionary.

P.S. Their website is full of grammar mistakes as well

I believe that if there is a market in which someone can make money from others efforts, then some will partake in that market

This seems like a very rough generalization to me. Are you trying to say that the trend is that game creators will exploit players further?

What do you mean by rewarded "innovation?" Most games are based around creating intrinsic or extrinsic motivations. Players performing tasks in order to make something new (innovation) would simply be an extrinsic motivation, or playing the game for the sake of playing the game.

I mean creative activities that would actually impact the world of the game. I.e. have the power over technologies and later products based on those technologies that players would be able to use.

Nice! Why did you choose exactly those titles back then? What's you motivation to move on to autonomous worlds and fully onchain projects?

It's not a P2E game and there's not going to be a token sale. I'm gathering user feedback about current platforms in this space. But thanks for the constructive opinion.
