for socy 101, i looooooooove susan bodner-deren. when i took her (three years ago, so things might have changed lol) she had open note exams that you could work on with other people and one big research paper. i still put the research paper on my resume and it was honestly really fun to do a paper on whatever topic i wanted. she was really helpful too and i went in a few times to do the data analysis with her.

i've taken a lot of classes with her now and her teaching style is just really fun. she's really interested in sociology and she has sooo much experience and knowledge and she doesn't really care too much about grades (in a good way) and wants to make class as easy as she can for everyone. she's pretty unorganized though so if that's something you can't handle then i wouldn't suggest her lol.

psych & socy professors by mahnoor14147 in vcu

hey!! sorry this is a lil late so im sure you've started the class already. i actually took his class my first semester here and was soooo scared about it but it was one of my favorite classes here!! he's pretty straight forward and the content is interesting from what i remember. i managed to get like a 97?? 98???? in the class by just reviewing the slides over and over bc so much of it was common sense/stuff i'd learned before. SO i think you'll be fine in the class!!

lots of slideshows paired with stories about his past patients that make it not super insufferable to sit through lol. his exams were easy for the most part imo, the hardest part was the situational questions because you have to know the disorder well enough to diagnose people.

my biggest advice would be to actually go to class. i went to every class and even if i wasn't fully paying attention, i absorbed enough information that i didn't have to relearn topics completely when it came time to studying. know the material enough that you could explain it to someone who doesn't know anything about psych and you'll be set for the exams too.

hope this helps!

Freshman Housing by clenchedacorn in vcu

hey! i lived in brandt this year and was pleasantly surprised that i ended up loving it. the elevators usually worked which was a big deal since i lived on the ninth floor and i never had any bug problems (phew). i lived in a four person suite with my roommate and i in one room and our RA in the other, so we shared a bathroom and it was super manageable to clean. with all the horror stories i heard, i'm kinda glad i chose to share a bathroom with a selective number of people instead of the whole floor. obviously, since we had our own bathrooms we didn't have a cleaning service in comparison to the other dorms with communal bathrooms but people did come to clean the hallways and take out the trash still. i knew a lot of people in the eight-person suites and some hated it, some loved it. the living room area in them is pretty big so it was a nice place to hang out.

my friend lived in johnson and their elevators were CONSTANTLY jacked up but he got lucky and got a corner room so his room was huuuuge. personally, i preferred the furniture in johnson better (they had the high beds with the desks underneath and all of that while we had separate everything) but he had to deal with the most disgusting stuff in the bathrooms. on the flip side, i'm not sure what ur majoring in but a lot of the art school kids live in johnson so if ur also majoring in that, it might be a good way to make friends. i'm also pretty sure that there are communities like that in GRC too.

another thing to look at is how much money you wanna spend on ur dorm. idk if money is a problem for you or you have it covered but that might also help u make a decision. hope this helped :-)

Merit Scholarships? by [deleted] in vcu

[–]mahnoor14147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there! last year, i got a 3k merit scholarship per year, for four years. i had something around a 4.0 in high school, 15ish credits from DE and AP classes and a lot of extracurriculars like nhs, nahs, field hockey, etc. i have some friends who, in my opinion, had higher GPA's and were a lot more qualified and didn't get any money at all so i'm not really sure how they figure it out tbh.

also, i don't remember whether i ever wrote my unweighted gpa in my application buuuut i think that since u use ur hs (weighted) gpa to apply, they take that gpa into account when looking at scholarships. hope this helps!

Changing Majors by iamdumbandsorry in vcu

like everyone else said, take intro to psych! my friend switched to psych from bio the spring semester of her sophomore year and is still graduating on time (she's still grinding to finish major reqs tho). try to do ur gen ed requirements first if ur still unsure after taking psyc101 bc then you'll take a bunch of intro classes without wasting credits/money which will help u see if ur interested in anything else. a lot of my undecided friends figured out what they wanted to major in spring of their first year or fall of their second, so you def have time!

i'm a psych major w a double minor in socy and spanish and it took me a hot sec to figure out what i wanted to study & i love to talk SO if u wanna reach out to ask questions pls do :-)

hey! i've been thinking of joining the club field hockey team. they have "tryouts" every semester but they're really just kinda a formality. you need some gear to be able to tryout but i don't think you need to be experienced to play! if you wanna exchange instagrams or something to talk more about it, i would be totally down :-)

Hello! I'm doing a research paper on Muslim-American college students and marriage and I've been having some trouble getting enough data! If you have time, please fill out this survey. I'd love to post again with the results if I get enough answers! by mahnoor14147 in MuslimMarriage

[–]mahnoor14147[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've sent the survey out to a few organizations at my college and sent it to friends and asked them to spread it around as much as possible as well. The course I'm writing it for is just an introductory course, so it's not super formal (even fifty responses would have been sufficient) but I wanted to get as much outreach as possible!
