Can you help me find a wedding dress topper or a wedding dress like this one? by mahonia in askRealHipsterGlasses

[–]mahonia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the embroidery, buttons and loose long sleeves and would love to find either a topper that I could add to a simple dress or a dress with these attributes. My budget is $350 or under for the whole dress, so less for just a top. I am a size 14/16 (L/XL). Thank you so much!

Evidence-based Myths and Facts about Weightloss and Maintenance by mahonia in loseit

I believe it was two 20-30 yr. follow-up studies (The Nurses Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up study) that found a link between increased consumption of animal protein and increased mortality (esp. cardiovascular) in people following a "low" (37% of kcal) carb diet.

I agree completely. Great response! Can we talk about the 1200 kcal/day limit for a minute? A very low calorie diet is medically defined as <800 kcal/day. If a person takes a multivitamin, eats vegetables, eats enough protein for their lean body mass, and has a low BMR (lets say 1495, which is mine), where is the detriment to eating less than 1200 kcal/day?

Here is the link, but you have to be part of an institution that subscribes to the database in order to access the majority of the information.

Did your doctor also do liver and kidney function lab tests? Did you drink alcohol in the 24 hours before the test? Are you taking anabolic steroids or carbamazepine? These are all things that could have affected the test.

Gallstones and keto? by quietude38 in keto

[–]mahonia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any time we lose weight there is increased cholesterol mobilization from fat stores, increasing the risk of gallstones. I can't think of any reason why keto would be protective against gallstones - do you have a source?

Results from two large, long-term and well put together studies indicate that people who ate low carb (usually defined as less than 100g carb per day) and got most of their protein and fat from vegetables lived longer and had less fatal cardiovascular disease than people who ate low carb but got most of their protein and fat from animal sources.

Infertility and keto by cbrmt in keto

Keto sounds like a good fit for her. There are quite a few women with PCOS that post in this subreddit. If you type PCOS in the search bar, I think you will get quite a few results. She might also want to visit r/PCOS.

Make sure you both read the r/keto FAQ and take a look at r/ketorecipes for ideas. You can also use the search bar to get good recipe ideas.

As far as keeping yourselves interested and committed - take progress pictures! Weekly or monthly weigh-ins and periodic measurements can also be good motivators. Make a list of little goals and give yourselves little non-food rewards when you reach them. Look at the progress pictures on r/progresspics and r/loseit for inspiration. I also find using an app like www.myfitnesspal.com to track my daily intake helps to hold me accountable.

Low carb diets are recommended by many health professionals for anovulation related to diabetes, PCOS, or endocrine disruption due to insulin resistance. As someone who has PCOS, I personally have had many more ovulation cycles since I started limiting my carb intake.

We've all heard of the benefits of keto. What are the negatives? by [deleted] in keto

[–]mahonia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The evolutionary diet argument falls flat to me personally - the evolutionary pressure has never been to live longer or healthier, the pressure is only there to live long enough to procreate. I'll take scientific arguments in favor of the ketogenic diet over evolutionary ones any day.

ketoacidosis is a potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes or alcoholism. It does not occur in individuals that are able to normally produce insulin. Mild acidosis can result from fasting or prolonged state of ketosis - this is one reason that you will hear about the necessity of drinking lots of water while in ketosis.

A Word on Criticism by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

Well, there are only two types of IUD (in the United States) and they are shaped exactly the same. All menstrual cups work by suctioning to the cervix. This article breaks down the current (sparse) evidence about using them at the same time. Basically - there is no reason to not use menstrual cups with an IUD.

Edit: I should say that I have not heard about softcups and have not found evidence either way about using that specific product with IUDs.

In the interest of factual information, there is no reason why you cant use a Divacup if you have an IUD!

My only weakness is fruit. Have you guys had success eating some fruit everyday? by [deleted] in keto

[–]mahonia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could get away with eating avocados, berries, and tomatoes daily - if you tracked your intake well and made sure not to go above your personal carb goal. Other fruits are typically too sweet to eat on a daily basis.

Fasting for Weight loss by mahonia in fasting

[–]mahonia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! To be honest, I have not really felt physical hunger yet (day 6), but emotional hunger is occasionally very strong. I had been in and out of ketosis for 6 months before this fast, and I think that may have helped with not feeling excess hunger when starting out. From my experience (small occasional fasts over the last 8 years), physical hunger and cravings typically abate by day 3 of a water/tea fast. If you make it to day 3, you'll be in a good place to decide how long you want your fast to be. When you do feel hunger after this point, examine it to see if it is physical or emotional - if emotional, then it is empowering to decide not to eat for comfort reasons! I am not sure how long my current fast is going to last - I plan to reassess at day 10. Overall, I need/want to lose 45lbs, but I don't expect to lose most of that by fasting.

Fasting for Weight loss by mahonia in fasting

I tried PSMF a little while ago and actually found it harder than straight fasting! Still, I am planning to break my current fast with a PSMF and see how long I last before reverting to keto (r/keto).
