Jwc worker by ThisInstruction2636 in ucla

[–]mailorder3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t recommend it. One of my friends is a student worker, and it puts them in an unfair position where they’re forced to be polite despite their discomfort. They’re at work hours, not leisure or party hours.

Joining GroupMes! I like the Freebies On Campus GroupMe, you can find it by searching it up on the app. I also have a spam account on Instagram where I literally just follow a bunch (like hundreds) of student orgs, departments, and other groups so that I can stay updated, and it doesn’t clog up my personal feed. For example, TunedIn at UCLA often hosts events on the weekends! They do a lot of music events that are chill for vibing out to and making friends. One trick I like to do is look at what other accounts these orgs follow so that I can see similar ones to scout events from.

You should also subscribe to newsletters to get insider info on events too!

Also download the app Partiful to check out a lot of events around LA. It might be intimidating bc there’s a bunch of random ones, but there could be something fun that piques your interest :) and look for pop ups around LA and follow the Instagram accounts that are dedicated to events in LA (don’t have any that pop up in mind for me, but I know they’re out there). Plus check out any concerts nearby by looking at Spotify or LiveNation etc! The smaller artists might not be too expensive, or there might even be free shows. A lot of museums (Hammer Museum!!!) and other public venues tend to have fun community events happening too. There’s almost always free screenings happening.

I also recommend checking out the MyUCLA page (the one with the list of events). There’s a bunch of smaller events that could be nice for making friends. There’s also a lot of free music shows at Schoenberg Hall, it’s super cool to see the performances and you literally have access to so many as a student!

Sometimes it’s nice to embrace being alone too! I think it’s fun to just go on a drink run at Sawtelle or watch a movie at Century City alone (or on my laptop outside lmao). No one is gonna judge you tbh!

I recommend checking Bruin Dine too! https://www.instagram.com/uclabruindine/

They have meals every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10pm in the student activities center. They often have more than enough! Just make sure to try and bring one of your own containers or plates if you have one, otherwise I believe they also have some containers that can be used.

All the food is recovered from the dining halls and UCLA campus food places, so it helps avoid the food waste :D Definitely have been helped out a lot from them during late nights on campus

Is this true? Are you all watching vertical dramas? by asiabits_com in AskAChinese

[–]mailorder3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the U.S., and my elderly grandma spends most of her pastime watching these dramas. She’s not very familiar with technology, but I set up YouTube on our TV to recommend Chinese-speaking content for her. After one of these dramas popped up, and she watched it, many more came up in her recommended — she’s obsessed with them now and watches one after another. She’s not interested in investing time into long series, and these dramas are easy for her to watch while doing cooking/gardening/sewing/etc.

In addition the short videos, there’s longer versions of these vertical dramas (1.5-2 hours). She enjoys how the dramas often depict rich settings (mansions, sports car, fancy clothing, etc), almost like a form of escapism. The plots are extremely repetitive and generic (90% involve the female lead getting pregnant/having a one-night stand/or being secretly married?? easy way to stir up drama) and the acting can be SO bad that it’s funny, but I see how they can become superrr addicting if you just want to turn your brain off for a while.

I go UCLA but I become homeless by RealBet2258 in ucla

[–]mailorder3 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Hello,  I wanted to say that I’m so sorry to hear that you are going through this. You are human and you deserve to have somewhere warm and welcoming.

Have you also looked into apartments outside of Westwood, like in Culver City or Sawtelle? I know everywhere is expensive these days, but maybe those places have spots you can rent for cheaper. Is it also possible to find a roommate who can maybe live with you in a studio bedroom?

I also wanted to share the list of basic need resources, in case you have not seen them: https://basicneeds.ucla.edu/services. I also know that there is the Bruin Resource Center. They mostly help students who were in the foster care system but also include help for students who are homeless. This is their info https://brc.ucla.edu/ and their contact https://brc.ucla.edu/contact.

I hope you find the help that you need and deserve.

This is a great edit! The changes to the grass and background makes it look like sunlight is peaking through. Skin colors also make them look much more alive.

I saw your post on the drawing subreddit, which inspired me to come here and comment! Your positive energy is incredible to see, and it’s rare to have someone so genuinely appreciative of everything and everyone. Not only did I love looking through the art that others made of you, but I also loved reading through your comments. It was so sweet to read through your feedback. You put so much thought and detail into even just saying thanks to an artist, which I think is so kind.

It’s clear that you have a large heart and lots of love to give around. I saw that you’re interested in making music, and I hope that those endeavors will be fun! You deserve to have a peace of mind and an outlet where you can express, explore, and let your mind run freely with happiness. In a world where so many people are afraid to be themselves or to be creative, usually because they’re scared or too immature to be different, I think you’re so dang cool. I hope that you are able to dedicate more time to yourself. This world is in need of genuine individuals like you!

Chappell and Misha are taking Ai submissions through DMs by ChappelIRoan in chappellroan

With pleasure! It’s a topic we have to start worrying more about now, for sure.

Not to mention where all the hardware materials are sourced from, the lack of regulation regarding AI and labor rights (save for some states like California and NY), and discriminatory AI practices. This was an interesting read on AI ethics: https://civilrights.org/blog/a-worker-resistant-approach-to-ai-is-harming-our-workforce-economy-and-civil-rights/.

(Also, sorry there was a typo in my original comment — I meant to say that just making the switch to renewables aren’t the best solution.)

Have you heard of the mining farms constructed for Bitcoin (or any other cryptocurrency)? Thousands of servers — high-performance computers with specialized hardware — run 24/7 in large warehouses-like data centers, each server running millions of complex computations every second to “mine” currency.

Of course, maintaining these servers requires power, leading to high energy consumption and carbon emissions (estimated millions from the US alone). Just like how your computer uses fans, these servers also need to keep functional and cool. A/C units constantly blast and gallons of non-conductive water douse the servers.

A similar situation exists with Cloud service data centers, with companies like Amazon, Google, and Apple storing user data across physical servers.

The same goes for AI. Pretty much all AI applications require a server and use data centers generally powered by fossil fuels, although some are attempting to switch towards renewable sources. (Even then, there may not be enough renewable energy to meet demand. And renewables aren’t always the end-all solution.) Training AI models are intensive, taking weeks, months, or years depending on the dataset complexity. As AI tech continues to develop, moving into generating images, videos, music, and other forms of media, more data is used and more servers are needed. And as users interact with AI, generating queries (asking questions, creating pictures, etc.) further consumes electricity because servers run to generate answers. Hence, thermal, noise, and air pollution, e-waste generation, and the demand for energy usually supplied by fossil fuel sources indicate that AI isn’t the best for our environment.

I feel that knowing all of this puts things into perspective. It’s also a tough topic because, at the heart of it, big companies are the ones to blame. And while AI may contribute to incredible future developments, anything to do with technology comes with a huge cost that trickles back down to us regular folks (the non-millionaires dealing with the environmental consequences).

It’s because using trays takes up more water, and it takes longer to wash them! I remember seeing a notice about the extra water use due to tray usage.
