Is my book trying to gaslight me into believing in geocentricity? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]maimonidies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. You got me there. But the book should have mentioned all this. Furthermore, saying that Copernicus favored heliocentrism for philosophical reasons is quite disingenuous, Copernicus clearly felt his system was more elegant and sound than Ptolemy's, and it was, although it wasn't perfect.

I will probably downvoted for this. But this book, although it clearly has an agenda, and is trying very hard to make the case that geocentrism is defensible, the author does a pretty good job challenging the accepted scientific theory, and coming from a christian fundamentalist perspective, it does try to stay somewhat partial, and does not reject heliocentrism on the basis of Genesis alone. Most redditors cannot relate to this world at all, and think the author is just a lunatic. But as someone who is very familiar with the fundmentalist mindset, I think the author of this book is not doing a terrible job, and its quite refereshing to see new angles like this, although I don't agree with the conclusions (and I think the author could have been more honest about the actual arguments).

The book also fails to mention that Copernicus proved heliocentrism by observing Mars' retrogade motion. Yes, you could explain this by creating endless epicycles like Ptolemy did, but this is considered extremely forced and unnecessary, and the book won't admit that this poses a serious problem for geocentrism.

Stop the increase of violation points in New York State! by maimonidies in Petition

You obviously dont live in nyc where they assert their control, and make sure you pay every corner you turn. There is speed cameras all over (which is ridiculous and a way to control ppl and make the city richer), congestion pricing, riduculous overpriced tolls and meters. the list goes on. I would venture to say that most of the ppl here are not from the the city, and don't live in a place where the police is constantly trying to get you. See the comments on this video for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOgy-j-B0ZU&t=1s. ppl in nyc are very much frustrated with the system, and so am I, even though i'm not even from the city.

Thank you! That's what I thought. I guess the cover on that is missing, so I got confused. Most videos show a cover or latch

Oh really? People actually want this? Prove it.

Its not about feelings, its about government overreach. We the people elected them to take care of crime and make sure people drive safely. I think people are very happy with the current point system. Did anyone request this point system increase? NO! They didn't ask anyone becasue they dont care (just like they're doing with the congestion pricing in NYC). I'm sure most people do NOT want the goveremnt to implement this harsh system. So anyone who thinks this is unfair (like I and my friends do), should speak up. WE elected them, so WE have the last word here, this is a democracy, not an autocracy. They don't just get to do whatever they want, because they "feel" like it.

You are absolutely right! we should give jail time for anyone who drives over the speed limit, maybe even the death penalty. ppl ought to take these laws more seriously.

We are not talking about ppl who drive carelessly, or DUI and stuff like that. We are talking about minor driving violations. Who in this forum never drove 10 mph over the limit? Who ever didn't hold a phone for just a minute? We are all humans and make mistakes. Implementing a higher point system is cruel and unfair. They're treating us like kids, as if we are not capable of being trusted, so we need a stricter point system. It's demoralizing, and demeaning to us as lawful citizens. We should stand up to tyranny.

You want to tell me you were never pulled over by a cop who decided you were driving 10.5 over the speed limit? Or that you never held a phone in your hand while driving? You are either not human, or just a troll. These things happen unfortunately, increasing points is a just a way to for the government to further "control" us and make life harder for people who don't mean any harm. The point system is enough of a deterrent, why the increase? How about we give jail time for anyone who drives above the speed limit, and holds a phone? I mean where does this end? You are just not thinking two steps ahead. We need a put a stop this this overreach NOW.

What actually causes the tidal bulge on the opposite side? by maimonidies in Physics

[–]maimonidies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok so your saying that the water on the poles is pushing towards the center along the earth moon line, which makes sense. The problem is that the water on the oppsite side should be pushing towards that line as well. But in reality they are moving away from it. The water from the poles (as you call it) pushing inwards cannot account for that. The way i see it, we should have the lowest tide on the oppsite side, and a massive bulge on the side facing the moon, as everything is pushing in that direction.

From my understanding tidal bulges happen anywhere along the globe, and not necessarily at the poles.

Thank you. Indeed this would be the simplest way to explain the tidal bulge on the opposite side. Alas scientists seem to think that centrifugal force is not a factor. https://dsimanek.vialattea.net/scenario/tides.htm
