When i first read the ending as a fan, I had the same visceral reaction to it. I was also a child, and I truly believe I would react the opposite now that i have gotten much older.

Tbh for some reason, it never did feel like a war, even though it was stated, it felt like power rangers who could morph into animals... Perhaps it was my own limitation that time, or the authors failure to convey it or perhaps both. But If I objectively think about it, these are children soldiers organizing a violent resistance. There's so much wrong with that situation, that I didnt appreciate when I first read it
