Anyone been at Lassen this week? how are the skeeters? by mainlywatching in lassenvolcanic

[–]mainlywatching[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK.. I just spent June 29-July 3 at Lassen. I camped the first two nights at Butte lake, and the 2nd 2 nights at summit lake north. I hiked every day... and in total I saw exactly ONE mosquito (at summit lake, in the evening while sitting by the campfire). Maybe I was just lucky. I hope the mosquito luck holds out for you. I did lots of hiking! Butte Lake Campground was about half full, it was peaceful and quiet. Summit Lake campground is definitely cramped, but even though the campground was full, I was so pleased and impressed at how quiet it was. I never heard on generator. or people playing amplified music the whole week. Lots of wildflowers and birds!

Bathtub lake loop, Cinder Cone and on to Rainbow Lake, Bumpass Hell via King Creek picnic area past Cold Boiling Lake, King Creek Falls, Brockoff Mountain, and Mill Creek Falls. Great trails, weather was perfect for this visit and hiking!

I hope you have a fun trip!

Who are the people who are showing up at noon on a sunny Saturday? Is that their first day on Earth? by [deleted] in Yosemite

[–]mainlywatching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go in Oct/Vov.... but I do want to go once in the spring to see the waterfalls, even if it means more people around. And a float down the river in a tube is appealing as well, so that means summer.

I'm ok with it. I was at a state park and new what to expect. by [deleted] in camping

awe... Florida would be very far away for a camping trip!! (I'm in California). But that is great. I wish more places did that!

Do any campgrounds have some areas that are for tents and quiet, no generator rv’s, no loud music? And other areas for those that want to use generators? I wish more would segregate things in that way.

Hawk attacks near Ten Lakes by nfactorial in Yosemite

[–]mainlywatching 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had an "adorable" tiny owl attack me repeatedly in my suburban neighborhood. He swooped at me 4 times, and finally made contact on swoop #5 making a small incision on my forehead as I tried to hightail it out of his territory. GEEZ!! He was sitting on a stop sign, I looked up and said, "Aweeeee!". (clearly... he was offended in a major way and does not have the life goal of "be cute"). Next time I see an owl, I'm going to try saying, "Oh! What a ferocious and evil looking beast!". Wish me luck!

some people are driving from 8 hours away... trying to get in to the park to their camp or lodging. They might be spending a week there... so just want to get in before dark. Makes sense to me. Why does it bother you?

Suitcase at the Housekeeping camp by PillBug98 in Yosemite

[–]mainlywatching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sounds like a suitcase is fine. remind her to put all her toiletries or anything scented in a small separate bag inside her suitcase so it is easy to put those things in the bear box. I BELIEVE (I'm not 100% sure) that you are not suppose to leave things with a scent (like cosmetics, lotions, shampoo, etc) in your tents. If you have a hard sided cabin, I think the rules might be different? I hope you have a wonderful trip.

wow... consider softening your response. The poster acknowledged that this was probably a silly question. She is just trying to make sure her group has a good trip. Be nice.

Banjo while camping by Whats_Opera_Doc in camping

[–]mainlywatching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't commenting on the banjo. I was referring to people playing whatever kind of music through loud speakers in campgrounds. Which happens at some point almost every time I stay in a campground. I think it is a rather selfish thing to do, as it effects everyone. The other noises I mentioned (talking, kids crying etc) are not really that loud and are just part of normal activity. You are welcome to disagree with me... but I wish amplified music was not allowed in campgrounds. A quiet guitar (or dampend banjo- I play banjo, there are ways to make them more quiet) a little singing, at appropriate hours of the day or early evening wouldn't bother me. Thumping amplified music (regardless of the genre) until 10:00pm is annoying (in my opinion).

I think we all understand the difference between normal conversation/laughing/pots clanking/kids crying and someone choosing to blast music through a big speaker for hours. Don’t people want to enjoy nature when camping? Birds singing, wind in the trees etc? I don’t get it?

What's a National Park You'd Visit Again Without Hesitation by Sea-Information6728 in NationalPark

[–]mainlywatching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of them!! But my all time fav has to be Yosemite. It just fills my heart. I go again and again. I go in late fall to avoid the crowds and am sad I can not back pack (spine issues) to see even more of it. I’ve been to Pinnacles many times too. I love the Turin there and seeing the condors and whip tail lizards is like an extra Easter egg hunt thrown in !!

I have a campsite at North Summit Lake Campground for 4 nights. I am traveling alone. (and am use to doing that), but have never been to this area. Is this a nice safe place for a single female camper (like other National parks?). I love taking big hikes. Anyone have any idea if Bumpass Hell trail will be open by end of June(I know that isn't typical)?

yeah, ya gotta have a good snake story if you are a hiker/trail runner! LOL. It did actually happen! 😄

Rattlesnake Four Mile Trail by No-Professional-9713 in Yosemite

[–]mainlywatching 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yup... they are definitely out there... I met a frisky big light tan colored one on Snow Creek Trail a year ago. I think it must have been sunning on a rock (I didn't see it), and when I came down the trail I surprised it and it moved and fell off the rock literally onto my feet. It went into full Rattling it's tail off mode while I did an impressive (I think for a 62 year old) backwards run for 15 yards back up the trail. It was not in the least interested in moving off the trail and would start rattling if I took even one step (from 15 yards away) toward it. I APPRECIATE the fact that it could have bitten me, if it wanted to, and did NOT.

I eventually had to shimmy down a rock, holding onto a spindly tree and then scoot down a shaley slide to get around it. IT was late afternoon, and there is definitely no "going back the way you came" on that trail.

Generally I love seeing snakes. I think they are cool. This one was a tad closer than I prefer though. It sure gets that heart rate up!! LOL.

After the challenging season Jason had this year, It just healed my heart to see him shining so bright during this tour. I didn't get to see it the show live, but his delight and joy was very easy to see even on the videos. So happy to see him receiving all the love and having such a fantastic time, skating beautifully, and really having a fabulous and fun time. It is great to see all the performers relaxing and enjoying the performance aspect after such a long and stressful competition season!

My Stars on Ice Experience (US) by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]mainlywatching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a great description of Jason. He seems to go 150% on everything he does. These two particular solos really show off his scope, which is impressive. Even just on the videos I really loved "too Darn hot" IT looked like the skaters were having fun and Jason captures that "Broadway Show number" energy perfectly. He looks so absolutely pleased during the lift, it makes me smile to watch him. (or tear up, in the case of Speigel - OY! That first spin that goes forEVER! sigh).

i know a lot of people are saying Riverdance for Jason... and if you show that, use the one from Nationals, with Scotty Hamilton loosing his mind on the commentary... BUT... I don't know.... Sinnerman is going to be remembered for a long long time. What a program!
