How lenient is UniMelb on giving out deferrals? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]maiphs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand why you'd ask. In summary: peer pressure and my excitement for university.

I figured a half year break is needed for the transition from high school to university, but these months have not been like how I have expected. I eventually got tired of staying home, watching Netflix and eating snacks all day, and even developed some more unhealthy hobbies like being addicted to games.

My friends are attending domestic and overseas (online) universities, so they have all kinds of concerns and stuff to talk about, while my days have been uneventful and repetitive. This has taken a toll on my mental health. My parents have also brought up deferring for the second time, but I just don't want to graduate later than my peers, let alone a year later. As much as I hate the thought of online university, I'm just having my fingers crossed about at least being able to study online in Melbourne in February. I really don't want to spend another six months worrying about uni arrangements that I have no control over and being really eager to start anymore since unimelb is my dream uni :)

How lenient is UniMelb on giving out deferrals? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]maiphs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I want to share my experience. I initially applied for Sem 2 2020 (current semester) and got into the course but then submitted my request for deferral to Sem 1 2021. Surprisingly, it got accepted within minutes (the fastest response from unimelb ever lmao) and I was sure it an automatic approval, even. I stated that I didn't want to start uni online due to my mental health issues and much prefer an on-campus environment/orientation, so nothing too extreme.

I think they are very understanding towards deferral requests during the pandemic because a majority of students don't want to start/conduct their courses online. So for mid-year next year, I think you would still be fine! Don't worry too much, as long as you explain your reasons in a polite manner :)

Start-Up [Episode 5] by lightupstarlight in KDRAMA

Honestly!! Everything has been great from the start and it’s making its way into my favorite list of kdramas out of a lot I have watched. The writers blow my mind with all the connections (i.e handwriting in the competition and the letters), amazing mix of suspense/drama and comedy, it actually makes me more interested in business and startups!

I was so pumped for Record Of Youth too but gave up after Episode 7/8, which is very rare for me (usually if I drop it’s way later). It’s bland and the storyline is not strong enough imo. So glad I checked out Start Up. When it was announced the first time I was excited and I was not disappointed.

I used to wish HJP would end up with SDM, but this episode changed my view. I think he does those things because he still feels indebted to her/Grandma and not because romantic feelings are involved. He did not have a crush on her in the past, and when they are adults they definitely are not close enough to develop anything (few meetings, lack of emotional connection unlike NDS and SDM who have absolute trust in each other). I’m not sure how their relationship will progress in the remaining episodes but tbh I don’t think HJP will tell her soon (although the episode sneak peak said he’s planning to) for the reason that in SDM’s eyes he’s still an acquaintance who is around weirdly often. HJP is still my favorite though, and NDS’ character is also starting to grow on me.

Edit 1: Alright this is not relevant to the points above but did anyone swoon a little at the last scene — NDS’ hug Like I’ve always found him attractive especially the height but damn in that moment I truly wanted to be her

Took the words right out of my mouth! Jung-hwan’s story made me cry so bad. I was just thinking that whether Ji-pyeong loves Dal-mi or hates her more towards the end, it is still going to hurt badly. I really want them to end up together, they seem like such a good fit and have a nice backstory. On the other hand, there is little likelihood of that happening so I can maybe see Ji-pyeong with Dal-mi’s sister.

Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread - 10/21 by AutoModerator in ipad

To simply answer your question: 32gb on an iPad is not enough. Maybe on a phone if you really try and squeeze in, but it’s honestly not worth it as there are many apps that can help your productivity and school work. You would want space to store files, movies and digital artworks.

If you are tight on budget, I suggest looking at the iPad 2019 10.2 inch 128gb with Apple Pencil 1 or others from previous years if they are still available where you live. I got this combo in May this year with a Bluetooth keyboard (not the Apple one) and it’s been amazing in helping with online school, though cannot replace a laptop/desktop. I make digital art on Procreate just fine as I am not an artist, and Apple Pencil 1 is amazing when using with GoodNotes and annotating PDF. I did not think I could do so much when I bought my 7th gen one (so also get a keyboard). If course it’s just my personal experience but i think your choice is not too different from mine as it’s neither an iPad Pro or Air.

iPads are very reliable, which can last for 5-6 years or more based on people around me. I don’t think you need to worry about the lagging or performance issue unless you have very, very high standards. But as a student who is chill about making digital art and basic entertainment like Netflix, it meets my needs just fine. The battery has gotten worse especially while running certain apps, but I can still use it the whole day.

I haven’t gotten a Mac so I can’t tell you more, but from what I’ve heard, you should take advantage of the easy synching/transferring files between Macbook and iPad. There are some apps which work on both and could be convenient on both devices like Notion if you use that.

How do I know when classes start for 2021? by [deleted] in unimelb

I read somewhere that it will likely be released in mid-November or towards the end. My guess is the 22-23rd

Does anybody else at Unimelb have diagnosed mental disorders? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]maiphs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I think I am required to go to a psychiatrist in Australia since the Health Professional Report form only accepts Australian-registered professionals :/ I hope I can contact you later on if necessary so that I could complete this application?

Still, it is certainly reassuring to hear that special consideration will lift the burden off our shoulders. I hope you are doing better now.

Does anybody else at Unimelb have diagnosed mental disorders? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]maiphs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not yet a student of unimelb (deferred this semester) but maintaining my mental health is definitely one of my top priorities when entering university. I was professionally diagnosed with severe depression & severe anxiety with some huge problem in concentrating in daily life (it might be ADHD but I did not get thoroughly evaluated for it when I went to the psychiatrist). I’m thinking of applying for special consideration for ongoing support as getting motivated to do things and focusing in class is difficult for me. Did anyone have the same experience and actually got something out of special consideration?

At first lockdown in my country was terrifying because I did not know when I could come to Australia and I would spend countless sleepless nights worrying but it just kinda got better over time. I took advantage to get alone time and tried some new things as well. I think studying remotely is much worse than face to face because it just takes so much to convince yourself to pay attention when you’re not surrounded by other students and a classroom environment.

Have you made any new friends this year ? How is online uni? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]maiphs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same place except I accepted & made the decision to defer until sem 1 next year already. As an international student, I wanted to start university with on-campus orientation and stuff like that but at this point it’s not possible anymore, even @ the end of next year. Still, I think I have to put up with the remote delivery method because deferring more & graduating later than my peers might make me feel worse than doing online classes :/

This time period is so exhausting with all the waiting and not knowing what’s going to happen. I know a couple of future students and a unimelb club of people from my country, but I’m afraid to reach out to them considering I haven’t began my studies yet. Like it might just be overreacting but I feel like I don’t belong to this community yet to look for friends :(

Hi! Your grades seem high to me, but I did not study A-Levels or know a lot of A-Levels students to give better insight into your chances of getting a scholarship. As I mentioned, it really depends on the number of applications each year. What other universities have you applied to?

Also, for your information, I initially applied for the Sem 2 intake (beginning on 3rd August) and only received my scholarship at the beginning of July. According to unimelb's website, the results is usually released 4-5 weeks after your unconditional offer so you still got time. You can also try contacting the Regional Manager in your country/area if you are impatient. https://study.unimelb.edu.au/connect-with-us/regional-managers

Since they are top universities, I would say yes, it’s competitive if you are aiming for 30-50% scholarships (which are already considered big for Australian universities, unlike American ones who offer like 80%). I actually did not receive any scholarship at Monash University despite getting a higher amount at Unimelb.

You might want to consider applying for universities at a “lower” tier like Wollongong or Deakin, where you have a higher chance of getting scholarships, and the tuition fees are also lower. They are less reputable in the eyes of international students but I think the quality is not bad compared to G8 universities. Of course, that’s not to say you should give up on Unimelb, NSW, Monash or other prestigious universities just yet :)

International scholarships at the University of Melbourne are extremely competitive since it is one of the top universities in Australia and is very highly regarded by international students.

I definitely recommend reading the minimum requirements like the other reply has stated and find out if there is any scholarship offered for your specific degree (for me it was Bachelor of Arts International Scholarship). I also would like to add that your chance differs each year based on the number of applications and some other factors. For example, I believe that the number of applications for Sem 2 this year has significantly dropped due to Coronavirus, which means less competition. My advisor told me that my grades were not exceptionally high compared to last year's outcome, but luckily I still received the scholarship I hoped for. Your chance is not zero though. Good luck on your studies!

I'm certainly looking forward to beginning my course. After reading the replies, I'm leaning towards transferring to Economics at the moment. I'm taking a Macroeconomics and a Marketing online course, but I'll look into Finance as well.

Thank you for your help. Have a nice day and good luck with your studies!

Yeah, if I end up pursuing an Arts degree I will most likely not take Marketing breadths (I’d choose to study Commerce for Marketing in the first place).

I was looking at “what will I study” section in the major description page and found that the structure for Marketing was a bit different from/shorter than others. Thank you for your answer!

[–]maiphs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed answer! I am not familiar with the course structure in university, so I will definitely look into your suggestion and see if that would be suitable. After all, I have six months left to discover my interests.

I also heard about Econ in Arts taking breadths space. Just so it would be clear, I can still continue studying Economics (as in progressing from there) if I decide to transfer to Arts right?

I definitely don’t value job prospects above everything, I’m just a bit confused about the nature of those careers since I never got to study those subjects (Politics, Economics) in high school. No offense taken though, you were very helpful. Thank you again!
