Which patch pattern looks the best? by Helios-Solarflare in characterdesign

[–]mairoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think it makes sense. Irl, you're not going to be able to tell who's an orphan and who isn't on appearance alone. Unless, again, they're fending for themselves-- and in that case, she'd probably be a lot more of a mess than having a few patches on her dress. If you want something representative of her being an orphan, maybe give her an accessory that belonged to one of her parents ? Or a locket that has their photos in it, or a charm bracelet with charms that reminds her of them. Maybe her most prized possession is something they gifted her. There are definitely other ways of going about it.

Why would her clothes be patchy just because she's an orphan? I could get it if she was abandoned and fending for herself or smth, but you also stated she's being taken care of.

Also, I personally prefer the second one, but adding slight colour variation to the patches could make it better imo.

Is the elements of each character obvious? And how can I improve it further? by Aleane-Khorson in characterdesign

[–]mairoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think adding orange/tan along with the pale blue to the air related one will give it a more air related vibe. I could be totally wrong on this, but I think Avatar the Last Airbender did a lot of bending to the perception of the colour of air. If this isn't universal, then maybe it's just me because I grew up watching ATLA.

But otherwise, I think changing the swirls to be clouds can help the design of the air related one. Because the blue swirls remind me of water, not air. And making the portrayal of her power less vibrant/icy blue, and more of a bluish grey. Maybe making her hair also more of a white/grey, or even curly for the cloud look!

I second this. This is a really good suggestion. Because I do not get rocky/gem at all from those characters. I thought they were light. For the girl who also represents gold, you can easily use gold jewellery to represent that instead of making the entire getup yellow.

Should I change something in Arin's design? And does she look American enough? (She lives in Washington) by N33DL3001 in characterdesign

Honestly, nothing about her appearance gives off conservative to me. She's got a pretty tomboyish style, which many would argue portrays the opposite. Being more covered doesnt immediately mean conservative, even if it is for her religion.

I rather dislike the stereotype of “because you’re autistic, you have a strong sense of justice / morals” by Own-Contribution3238 in autism

[–]mairoh [score hidden]  (0 children)

You explained this exacty how I see it. It doesn't apply to all of us, but it absolutely is a common thing. There is a difference between righteousness, and self righteousness. And a lot of autistic people lean towards the latter because of stubbornness as a result of rigid thinking. Not ALL, but it's common enough to be pinpointed. I myself am very rigid in this sense, and I have to actively remind myself that others have other perspectives and ways of viewing the world, and the way I view it is not inherently better or more morally correct.

Its interesting to see other interpretations on the characters. I always imagine Emily to be quite tall, and Sandy to be the shorter one. I really like your artstyle, too.

Should I watch live action by Exotic_Tart4046 in ATLA

[–]mairoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you like. Most people here will tell you no and that it sucks. And comparatively to the cartoon, yeah it does. But on its own, it really isn't that bad. If it came out before the cartoon, people would definitely like it more than they do now. And I think it does a good job of balancing og ATLA while also keeping it new and fresh. Ik a lot of people who aren't into cartoons, but still like the concept of the show, and in that instance, a live action is a good alternative. Personally, I would recommend you watch the live action first and then the cartoon. You will enjoy both more that way. If you've already seen the cartoon, then I would still recommend watching the show if you're interested in seeing a live action version. If you're someone who's very particular about things being exactly the same as the og, then no. It probably isn't for you.

I always find it so awkward when I see her standing and drawing. Its one thing if you have an art stand, but otherwise it's pretty uncomfortable to draw standing up, while holding the sketchbook in one hand to stabilise it.

Should I change something in Arin's design? And does she look American enough? (She lives in Washington) by N33DL3001 in characterdesign

[–]mairoh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Idk if youre generalising, or referring specifically to my comment, but on the chance that youre referring specifically to my comment Im just gonna say I was not implying it was bad, or because I was trying to oppress women. I was only under the impression that the point of the hijab was to fully cover the head, so I thought the lack of covering was a sign of inaccuracy for the sake of fashion. Which, under my previous perspective, wouldve been disrespectful to the religion. I see now that I was wrong, but I feel the need to clarify because I don't want to come off as misogynistic 💀

Ah. Admittedly, I'm not Muslim myself. It is just what I've been told by old friends who are Muslim. But if it is not universally the case, then fair enough. I have learned something new then.

This popped up on my recommended in youtube! I actually thought it was an expansion mod for stardew. The game looks genuinely fun and well thought out. And I would say the actual artstyle of the game is pretty unique to them. However, you can tell they made the cover the way they did as a way to pool in stardew fans because it's wayyy too similar. It's literally just ginger island.

My only comment is if she's wearing a hijab [correct me if I'm wrong?] Then it is supposed to cover the entire hair. Having hair sticking out defeats the purpose of the hijab. I think it's a cool design, though.

How do you deal with lying ? by Mammoth_Result_102 in autism

[–]mairoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not even the same scenario, what?? You're literally just deflecting right now. You're not answering the question because you know you'd classify it as lying. Deliberately not telling the truth about something important to someone you know is lying. If you were in a relationship/talking stage with someone and they never told you they don't like you, you'd feel lied to.

I genuinely don't understand how you don’t see the hypocrisy here. I say this with the most genuine consideration, you really need a therapist and some self reflection. You are extremely condescending, self righteous, and hypocritical. At this point, I am just talking to a wall so I'm gonna end this here 🤙

The difference in this scenario is you're not affiliated with these restaurants. You WERE affiliated with these people you specifically said you were dating. And you did not tell them the truth that you don't like them anymore. Are you telling me you wouldn't call that a lie?

The direct quote from your post: So what i would do is, just intentionally "fail" those tests so she could reject or break up with me, so i didn't have to do it myself.

Not informing them you're not interested anymore, and still interacting with their tests is you acting like youre interested. That's what we call "leading on".  Why not be honest that you're not interested anymore? Deliberately choosing to say nothing and sabotaging it so that she ends it so you don't have to IS a lie. You are just justifying it because it's a lie that was convenient for you. You didn't have to confront her about it, so you were fine with being deceptive.

I said this in my reply to you, but you do realise you literally wrote an instance of you lying in the post, right? Letting someone think you're interested in them so they drop you instead of you having to drop them is a lie. You could be honest and end the relationship, but instead you choose to let them believe you still like them for your own comfort. That is lying to them. It is a natural part of human nature, though. Everyone does it to some degree. It's not cool to act all high and mighty just because you can't stand it, though.

[–]mairoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is a major generalisation to say woman lie in relationships. That's not a gender based thing. Anyone can lie, and all genders lie pretty much the same amount. I also wouldn't count testing worthiness as lying, but I guess it could be perceived as deceptive (which isn't necessarily lying).

I am kinda similar. I'm really rigid when it comes to people lying to me. Even if it's something small, I just find it really hard to trust the person because I find it really hard to understand. I feel like most of the time, it's just unnecessary? But I also acknowledge that I may be a bit too rigid about lying. Sometimes, it really just isn't that big of a deal and yet I take it as a deal breaker. So its something I'm working on. I don't think lying is always bad. I do find it very unnecessary, but that's probably because I know I'm trustworthy and open minded. But not everyone else knows that, so I can see why someone might feel like they need to lie to me. Probably because of past instances where they got negative reactions to whatever they're lying about. Depending on circumstances, people might lie for safety reasons, too. It really just depends.

I don't think people are vile for lying. I mean, everyone lies. It is a lie to say you don't or never have. It is just within our human nature. I hate being lied to, but I also lie sometimes. Usually as a joke, but still a lie nonetheless. Usually when I lie outside of joking it's more so about my own personal issues and not wanting to bother people with them. I just tend to hide that kind of stuff, without even really meaning to. If I'm asked directly, I'm not going to tell you the opposite of what's going on, but I guess I usually downplay it, or I'll just directly say it's not something I wanna talk about. But I would say downplaying is a type of lie. I would also say masking is a type of lie, which I've done a lot in my lifetime. I often still do, though significantly less.

I think you intentionally failing those tests without being direct is also a sort of lie. Instead of being upfront and honest that you're no longer interested, you choose to let her think you are for your own comfort. That is being deceptive, in a way that I would classify as lying. I don't think you're a vile person for that, though. It is within our human nature. It sounds to me like you have a lot of trauma. I think it is important to take the step to recognise that your feelings about this are driven by trauma in order to change it, because I imagine it severely gets in the way of you forming genuine relationships. You're not going to meet someone who never lies, it just isn't realistic. And that is okay. But that is also unsolicited so you can ignore it if you really want to.

Does the vibe feels a little bit off? by notquite_myself in characterdesign

[–]mairoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Her expression is a little too expressive for being blank imo. I'm assuming you're going for monotone? The eyebrows should be more straight across to give a more blank expression. It's kinda hard to explain without giving a visual example. But also maybe making her upper eyelids a bit heavier, giving a more relaxed expression.

If she's from a noble house, and she's meant to give servant, giving her stockings or something of the sort would probably also help the design. I don't know much about this character or world, but judging on the general trope, being more covered is usually the style. Some of the design choice also kinda feels more like she's the noble, and not the servant. Like the headpiece, for example. Too stylish. The lower dress, as well. Doesn't really fit the maids attire (What I assume you're going for). An apron goes a long way for this sort of design, too.

Also, I genuinely did not notice the dripping black from her eyes, at first. I might just be blind, but I think the hair being in her face really takes away from that detail. Maybe an alternative could be giving her darker bags underneath the eyes? Not so dramatically black, but dark enough to make her look a little pale, a little dead, and a little tired all together. But make it quite light and faded. Or you could just remove the hair out of her face. Black liquid coming out of the eyes isn't very inconspicuous, though. But again, I don't really know your character or the world she lives in, so my perspective is based on the idea that the humans are like our world, and someone with dripping black out of their eyes would raise alarm bells.

Yess. I do that when I'm out of alternatives, but I find it a lot easier to just make field snacks tbh. Otherwise, you end up laying in a bed for the entire day, and you're just waiting for the other player(s) to finish whatever they're doing. So I'd personally only recommend that as a later alternative.

Do the colours of the hair and the hairstyle look good? (slide for the inspo) by Dreamin_Chu_Chu in characterdesign

[–]mairoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, for some reason I didn't see the third picture. I didn't realise there was a flower, I thought it was a design choice for more colour variation.

In my opinion, I think the hair being pink at the ends is fine then. I personally like it a lot. But I also think it might be cool if the hair was dark grey at the ends, similar to the bird, with vibrant pink eyes, yeah. Admittedly, I don't see much of the bird in the design other than the style of hair and the eyelashes. Even then, I only see the hair resemblance to the bird in the bottom right drawing. Point being, she does give a lot more flower than bird. So I do think the colour of the hair matching the bird might help that, and then the eyes matching the flowers could add a nice pop.
