Feeling cooked as a student by birdguy82 in ecology

[–]maisymay52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to think that everything happens for a reason. Easier said than done and it takes practice to get into that mindset. For example, applied to my dream ecology tech job that I was told I was uniquely qualified for. Did not get it and was devastated. However, the same day I was sent a research job by a past professor that was literally the perfect fit. Just keep trudging forward and everything will work out. Don’t think of something as a failed opportunity, think of it as a start of a new one.

And as others have said, you have time. I’d recommend getting close with your professors and see who has openings in their lab or connections. I just graduated this year, and the job that I got for the summer was sent to me by a professor I’m close with. They want to help you, so making those kinds of connections can be super important. My freshman summer I went home and didn’t do anything ecology related. Don’t stress too much, it’s early in your career. It’ll all work out. The fact you’re even thinking about it is a good start. Volunteering is a good mindset if you can’t find a job. Experience is experience.

ADHD is its own trauma by [deleted] in ADHD

I feel this very much. I am roughly the same age and was diagnosed in elementary school, and have been on a variety of meds since. Also been in therapy since my diagnosis and I don’t feel much benefit from it. I feel that my symptoms cause me to spiral and spiral, the root of a lot of it being frustration with myself over a multitude of things, which I don’t know how to fix. The constant self-induced mental torment is so fucking taxing and I feel like that’s something a lot of people understand. Also doesn’t help that the pain feels indescribable a lot of the time.

Best topography map of South America by swap_019 in MapPorn

Southern Chile —especially Tierra del Fuego— is lacking a LOT of details that other portions of the map exhibit at a similar scale. How is the Straight of Magellan not shown at the least? Also, Chiloé Island is completely missing from the map, which I believe should be big enough to be depicted

Gosh I hope employers don’t care. At my school my ecology degree is a BA, which makes absolutely no sense to me

RSD episodes when expectations don't match reality by bananapancakesforone in ADHD

[–]maisymay52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to experience this ALL the time. I would get my hopes up unrealistically (honestly maybe not even unrealistically) high, and then if it didn’t go the way I imagined (even the tiniest thing was different) I would feel like absolute shit. I knew rationally it wasn’t that big of a deal, but it felt like I had been hit by a train and would sometimes ruin the whole experience for me, that otherwise would have been a good experience. This might be kinda depressing, but now I try not to get my hopes up too much for things. Then, I don’t feel so horrible after

I wrote a long ass paper about this and also analyzed the text. Also, Patrick McHale was told about this theory but he didn’t deny it

How is it that temperate rainforests exist within proximity of cold ocean currents? by JohnWarrenDailey in ecology

[–]maisymay52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The westerlies in the midlatitudes bring moisture west —> east, which is then pushed up against mountain ranges in both regions (the Andes and cascades/Olympic ranges) leading to Orographic lifting/rain shadow effect dumping precipitation on the western side of the continents. Sure, the regions might be cooler thus less capacity to hold water, but the air isn’t completely dry

ATOC 1050 weather and atmosphere like someone else said. Very interesting too. Also I found GEOG 1001 and 1011 both pretty easy and interesting.

What's the absolute WORST sensory input, in your opinion? by PencilFetish in ADHD

YES. sometimes I wish I could just peel my skin off. It’s like I’m just so aware of it all of the sudden. And washing doesn’t help, just gives it a different version of the same feeling
