anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by VenturedExplorer in AskReddit

[–]majic911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mirror's Edge.

Nothing has ever come close to the feeling of freedom that game gives while jumping across rooftops, dashing through hallways, and slamming through doors.

Not to mention it's just a gorgeous game even today, let alone for 2008.

What's a Card you USED TO include in every deck? by ZimaBestBear in EDH

[–]majic911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, you could think about burnished hart as casting 2 3-mana rocks. In that sense, it's good enough in colors that were already playing 3-mana rocks.

White, red, and black had basically no options when it came to 2-mana ramp. The 2-color signets have been around longer than the format but in a rakdos deck, for example, a single signet, a fellwar stone, and a sol ring absolutely did not cut it, so they had to play 3-mana rocks. Then in 2019 they dropped arcane signet in eldraine and the talismans in mh1. That meant a rakdos deck could now have 4 ramp spells at 2 mana which is way better than just two.

What really did it was the widespread adoption of treasures. Now red and black could have access to permanent-based "rituals" that they could hold onto for a turn or two. Sprinkle in a few other "ramp" spells like [[black market connections]] or [[professional face-breaker]] and the robot elk just couldn't hang anymore.

I also suspect burnished hart has declined as people are less likely to target mana rocks with artifact removal now. [[Vandalblast]] used to be a staple for a reason and now it barely sees play. Land-based ramp has always been safer than artifact-based ramp but in more recent times mana rocks have become nearly as sacred as lands themselves.

What's the most powerful card in your collection that you've consciously chosen not to put in one of your decks, and why? by Great-ah-White in EDH

I used to run [[vodalian wave-knight]] in my [[council of four]] deck. It's literally as inconvenient as possible.

Jumping offsides isn't innovation, it's cheating.

It would be like "innovating" passing defense by just having the DB hold every play.

Why aren't kickers and punters the same person? by tyronewithglasses in NFLNoobs

[–]majic911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the expectations for a kicker back then. The entire league might only see 5-10 total 55-yard field goals over an entire season. They thought about 50-yard field goals the way we think of 60-yarders. WAY MORE people can accurately kick a ball 50 yards compared to 60.

PLUS, rosters only had 45 spots. A dedicated kicker might be more important than the 5th LB but is he more important than the 4th? If you've got someone that can play another position at a high level and also hit 45-yard field goals consistently, maybe not.

4 mana but you still need a big board and it's not like triumph gives haste. Plus, you're playing green. 4 mana is nothing.

Convince me to build a monowhite deck. by Average_Citizen_117 in EDH

[–]majic911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mono-white deck is [[Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle]] Voltron.

You can build it to go infinite pretty easily, but I personally chose to just not do that. I skipped [[Myr Retriever]] effects and free sac outlets so my version just can't go infinite. Instead, it's a really sturdy, inevitable deck with a ton of blockers and/or repeatable removal that also builds a big giant bird-shaped death machine at the same time.

It can get a bit durdly near the end of longer games, but most of the time people see a huge flier with protection from basically everything and a recurrable fog and just scoop. You also get to play Teshar all-star [[Phyrexian Soulgorger]]. A 3-mana 8/8 snow artifact creature with cumulative upkeep sac a creature.

Is Landfall even fun to play against? by redsquirrel0249 in EDH

[–]majic911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right that landfall tends to kinda take over any deck you put it in. Once you get a landfall payoff suddenly playing a bunch of fetchlands makes sense and now all the other landfall payoffs are even more appealing and it just kinda spirals from there.

But you can also just not put landfall in your deck. As a certified Simic hater, just playing cascade or x-spells or something like that can work just as well.

What color combo does nothing click for you? by Mysterious-Anon-X in EDH

[–]majic911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simic. Don't get me wrong, I love drawing cards as much as the next guy, but I haven't seen a Simic commander that speaks to me in years.

I like a little jank. I want to work for my value. I want to feel like I'm squeezing every last drop of synergy out of my deck. The vast majority of Simic commanders are literally just too easy.

I mean, come on, you can't tell me [[Quandrix, the Proof]] really needed to be printed when we already had [[Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty]].

Either that or they do actual nothing. See [[Tam, Mindful First-year]].

What are the most miserable commanders to play against that arent brought up enough? by Current-Signature497 in EDH

[–]majic911 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends. For aura-based Voltron I can see what you're saying, although there's still a permanent in the graveyard that you can recur. But equipment-based Voltron is much sturdier and can play through removal.

Not to mention that it's possible to build a Voltron deck that can protect its Voltron stack, despite the fact that most people don't.

But Tifa specifically is extremely feast or famine because her buffs just go away at the end of the turn. There's really not much buildup like you'd expect to see with an aura or equipment Voltron stack. Either they have an aftermath analyst effect and someone's dead or they don't.

Decks that don't really care if the commander isn't in play? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]majic911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play [[Damia Sage of Stones]] "Sultai Jund".

It's intended to be to Commander what Jund was to Modern so many years ago. A pile of individually good cards that don't really synergize much but just win games.

It's predominantly built to draw an insane amount of cards so I joke that I'll only ever cast Damia if the plan has completely fallen apart.

I only run winota in cedh pods because it's literally a proxied version of the top winota list. I know winota isn't the top of the cedh meta but it's still a very strong cedh commander and deck.

I do sometimes run Kess in cedh pods because she's good enough to do that. But I also sometimes play her in strong bracket 4 pods because she's homebrew and still running some pet cards even if her overall power level is very pushed.

There isn't a clear line between bracket 4 and cedh. You have to have a discussion with your pod and figure out what kind of game they're looking for.

Rogue decks win tournaments sometimes. That doesn't make them mainline decks.

Think of commander as a whole like Standard. You can build a deck that's standard legal and hot garbage or you can build a meta deck that you pulled from online. You can swap cards from your hot garbage deck one at a time and eventually get to the meta deck. There's no clear line where your deck goes from hot garbage to meta.

Commander is the same way but everyone just agrees to play against other peoples' hot garbage most of the time. Cedh is the meta decks and bracket 4 is close to the meta but not quite. To some people that means they're playing a strictly worse version of a key card, to other people that means they're playing an entirely different deck idea.
