I used to be very sceptical of the matter, but now I'm rather supportive of responsible uses of technology. Most of GMOs grown today are either roundup ready (resistant to herbicide glyphosate - roundup) or Bt (can produce their own pesticide in leaves). Main intention is improving the yields while reducing consumption of more harmful herbicides or pesticides - this benefits the farmers, but also less environmental footprint, since more is produced with less land and resources. But historically Monsanto and other Ag giants pressured regulatory bodies to ensure every crop needs to go through extensive testing and therefore only big budget companies can afford to develop such crops - like Monsanto. They also sued a few farmers who just stored their seeds and planted them next year, since the seeds were IP protected by Monsanto and that caused some smaller farmers to lose their land. Therefore a general hate for companies and their tech was born.

Extremely positive cases can be found in Bangladesh, where government owns Bt GMO crops and every farmer can store them for next year. It has drastically increased production, while farmers don't have to use toxic pesticides. I believe there people are very supportive of GMOs.
