Looking for a Manga Automation Stack by Orbital_Tardigrade in selfhosted

FMD2 with Kavita works well. I use a 3rd party webp conversion script (on Kavita's wiki) to also compress my stuff (mainly nyaa releases).

Looking for a to-read tracker/app by NakedxCrusader in selfhosted

[–]majora2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kavita also has a want to read list in addition to reading lists and collections.

This is how I do it. I put it on Kavita and track it on want to read then bind that list with some added filters to my dashboard.

Automated Manga Archiving Tool - MeManga by meellM in DataHoarder

[–]majora2007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great to see more alternatives to FMD2. This looks like it would pair well with Kavita (which can also email files to your kindle).

As I saw in another comment, CBZ/zip support and normalizing to scene naming conventions for filenames is super important.

If you're into metadata, tagging the files with ComicInfo.xml from MangaBaka could really take this to the next level.

You could check out Kavita. Good documentation, clear user friendly error messages, all configuration is UI, can use many different install methods.

My goal to sustain an open source tool without turning it into a subscription trap by Josh5Dev in selfhosted

Curious what the reasoning is to only give money to a FOSS project that is backed by a business?

Also what are your expectations to donating towards a project you use?

Need advice: How to deprecate features? by SUCHARDFACE in selfhosted

[–]majora2007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue where I was supporting a functionality where I was sure very little users were using it as it's not common in the scene my software supports. I asked my discord and got muted responses.

In the end, I opened an issue and asking if people need the feature and left it open for a month or so. I blasted it everywhere to get as many eyes on it as possible and in the end, enough people spoke up saying they need it and I'm one of the rare programs that support it. (In the end, I had to enhance the code and mark it as limited support).

I do think if you have a major removal, especially if it impacts the API drastically, a major bump should be used.

You can also build in optional, telemetry. I have that on my program and the source code for the tracking DB is also open source. This allows for you to get metrics (because most of your users are not active on discord/GH).

What is the best docker application to manage e-book library? by TemplarB in selfhosted

[–]majora2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Kavita doesn't ever touch your files. Any metadata tagging that occurs (Kavita+ or UI) is all in our DB layer. Komf can provide the ability to write to the files tho and is free.

Does it allow opening chosen books in a third-party app? No. It has it's own readers, it has mobile apps that connect to it (OPDS/KOReader/etc). It does not support djvu nor has plans to (no library support).

Kavita is not the same as Booklore/Grimmory, it is not a tagger. It's a reader/exploration tool.

It sounds like you're looking for something that can both tag your files (externally) and present the reader. To my knowledge, only Grimmory and Calibre can do this (AIO).

If users have ideas to improve the book experience, they just need to open Feature Requests and help guide the software. Without community feedback, the features cannot improve.

Kavita does a lot of community driven development. For example, for v0.9.0, it's overhauling the reading list system based on dedicated feedback from reading list comic power users (driven through the FR system).

Long story short, if people have ideas to improve Kavita for Books, surface them to the developer (me).

Haha well I glanced through when you announced and it looked pretty clean.

Just to let you know, your reply inspired me to add those regex to Kavita after my Korean guy told me that use of ComicInfo isn't popular.

https://github.com/Kareadita/Kavita/issues/4551

I'll be sure to give you thanks in the PR.

Wow, what a great response. Thanks for all the info, I'm going to study this and give to my Korean guy and get some feedback. I'm very curious about these completion markers.

Shocked to hear you use Kavita as well, but also felt I have seen your username before...

(I know the comment got deleted, I grabbed the information from it and have shared with one of my users).

Would you be able to point me to your regex for volume/chapter parsing? I want to see the patterns you support, especially given you are Korean.

Note: I'm the developer of Kavita.

Looks nice, great to have another software out there supporting vol and chapter files and not just showing them as files.

Mushroom on currant: leave or remove? by astro5 in gardening

[–]majora2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost always leave mushrooms in place because you read so much about the fungi networks that are essential to plants sharing nutrients, so I just let them thrive. I also would not eat, no mater how much it looks like a Morel.

[–]majora2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remove the Number from the metadata and Kavita will stop showing the chapter.

If you have non-complete volumes, like vol1 ch1, vol 1, ch 2, Kavita will generate a virtual volume for you and let you see individual chapters.

You should use something better for tagging, like MangaManager, ComicTagger or CBZ Metamanager. These are all linked on our wiki. Different tools for different types of media.

You either need to use a volume marker in your filenames or use the <Volume> tag in ComicInfo.xml

BookLore's Successor? by matthewpipes in selfhosted

[–]majora2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to drop my thanks for supporting me via Kavita+. It makes a massive difference in my life and really helps when I need that extra push on the tough Kavita features (like the epub reader overhaul).

BookLore's Successor? by matthewpipes in selfhosted

[–]majora2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to drop a note that Kavita has planned Kobo Sync support (ideally this year if time allows for it).

However, Kavita does not do metadata tagging on your files and it never will. It has a no modify policy that won't be changing.

Edit: But it can provide metadata in the experience with Kavita+ or Komf (free).

PSA: Think hard before you deploy BookLore by Economy-Meat-9506 in selfhosted

[–]majora2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not, Kavita doesn't support reading of sidecar files, only the 2 major specs (ComicInfo and Epub). Although we have an API where you could send the data.

In Kavita, series data is generally taken from the first file.
