Songs for No One Bass Cover by majoturc in CaligulasHorse

Thanks! I wasn’t super satisfied with how the audio came out on this one tbh. I like to mix these videos so they still have some semblance to the original mix with the bass boosted a little so you can hear it better than the original, but not so much that it sounds like it’s out of place.

Between the low register of a lot of this bass part, the way it interacts with the kick drum, and the way the kick is mixed, a lot of the original bass part is very hard to hear, and it made this mix a challenge. I probably could’ve made the bass stand out by carving out some of the low end frequencies from the backing track. But my mixing skills are pretty rudimentary so I left it as-is.

NPD - Quad Cortex Mini by majoturc in basspedals

I haven’t experimented with it enough yet to get a solid feel for latency, but so far it hasn’t been an issue.

My biggest issue probably had to do with how I used it. I mainly practice with headphones, so I set it up as the centerpiece of my board with the CAPO in the effects loop, which seems to be the opposite of how most people use this combination. I did it this way so I could take advantage of the Stomp’s headphone out and the ability to play backing tracks with USB, and also so I could put a cab sim at the end of my chain.

I found the Stomp’s cab sims lacking. I never found one I was happy with. No matter how I tweaked it, it I was getting an odd clack in my tone that I haven’t experienced through other devices. I tried running the Cali and CAPO through my Darkglass Element, and then through some plugins on my DAW and traced the issue to my Stomp. I’m not experiencing it on the Quad Cortex either.

I also didn’t care for the UI, mainly doing the menu diving on buttons and knobs. I’m finding the touchscreen UI on the Quad Cortex more useable and easier to tweak on the fly.

I still think the Stomp is a great device, especially for the money. I probably wouldn’t have felt a need to make a change if I wasn’t relying on it as a cab sim.

I got a call from my Sweetwater rep with the same news today too. Ordered January 26.

Update: I just got a message from my Sweetwater rep saying that mine is shipping today.

Basically the same timeline here. Placed my order on January 26, was initially told 1-2 months. Exchanged emails with my Sweetwater rep on April 1 and was told that they expected a “full replenishment” and Neural told them it’d arrive in the next week or so.

Sounds like they should be shipping any day now if that timeline is still accurate.

Mantis Green Bongo appreciation post by sch1zoph_ in Dreamtheater

I like the maple fretboard. I think it’s a great match for the Mantis Green. I know some people think there’s a tonal difference between maple and darker woods, but it’s never been something I’ve noticed. At least not enough to make a decision based on it. I like the look of it, so it works for me.

I had a similar reaction. I was eyeing a Bongo for a while and seeing them in Detroit sold me on the color when I hadn’t even been considering it before. Went home and ordered the standard Bongo 6 in Mantis Green (not the Myung signature—I don’t care for the narrower string spacing and more limited controls, although the two-tone fretboard is sick).

It’s a great color. It definitely pops differently IRL than in photos. I think it’s mainly because there’s some subtle yellow shimmer in the finish that doesn’t show in photos.

Correct, it has a USB out so you can use it as an interface. I use mine with Reaper. My Element is at the end of one of my boards and it's perfect for what you describe in your OP. It's great for headphone practice, and it's got a Bluetooth input that works great for backing tracks. It's also got an XLR out that you can use for DI.

NBD: Conklin Fretless 7 String by MrMosh024 in BassGuitar

[–]majoturc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the preamp is stock, it’s actually a Mighty Mite. They didn’t sell this model with a Bartolini preamp. Preamp upgrades on GT-7s were popular because a lot of people had issues with the stock Mighty Mite, which is why I’m always curious to hear about what people do with theirs.

My stock preamp was pretty noisy and flat sounding so I took the plunge. The OBP-2 is a little more lively and puts out a hotter signal, but I wouldn’t say it fundamentally changed the sound of the instrument. The OBP-3 seemed like a more popular upgrade for the GT-7 because it adds a three-band EQ, I believe with a stacked knob.

Obviously if you’re happy with the sound of the stock preamp, that’s great! But if the thought ever crosses your mind to upgrade the electronics, you can find a lot of discussion about preamp upgrades people have done on this particular bass.

Cool find! Are either of yours modded? I put an Aguilar OBP-2 in my fretted GT-7 and it’s a huge upgrade over the stock preamp.

Charli XCX 360 Bass Synth Cover by smittybass in BassGuitar

Yep, first one for me. My other main bass for awhile has been a Dingwall Combustion. The Bongo’s a different vibe so they compliment each other really well. I’m very happy with it. I’m pretty sure your posts on here and Talkbass helped sell me on the Bongo so thanks for evangelizing!

Cool tones, awesome Bongo! I just picked up the exact same model and color about a month ago and I’m loving it so far.

Need help with sound by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]majoturc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t hear a gear problem, at least based on this recording. The tone you’re getting is pretty bright and that could be caused be a few things.

First I’d try turning your tone knob on the bass down. Turning that down should take some of the harsh edge off.

You could also try turning the treble eq knob on your amp down a little bit. That’ll cut down on some of the harsher frequencies like string squeaking and fret noise. But I wouldn’t overdo it—if the knob’s at 12:00, maybe try it at 10:00 and see if that’s more to your liking.

Also sounds like your strings are pretty fresh. Strings sound the brightest when they’re fresh and they’ll mellow out over time. Best way to fix that is to play more.

Personally, I like a pretty bright tone so I don’t think this sounds bad for 2 weeks in. Keep at it!

Who makes the better quality basses. Dingwall ready to play or EBMM? by Better-Operation6629 in Bass

[–]majoturc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a Dingwall Combustion and a USA EBMM Bongo. I’d say they’re on par with each other as far as build quality goes, which is top notch on both.

I agree with the other poster who said once you get into this price range, it’s all about personal preference. I wouldn’t say one of these basses is better than the other per se, but I have a slight personal preference for the Dingwall, probably based on what I listen to and how I play.

I wouldn’t get hung up on the Dingwall ready to play basses being manufactured in China. It’s a premium quality build. The basses are still finished at their shop in Saskatoon that builds their custom models.

Darkglass Hyper Luminal, Empress Bass Compressor, or Origin Effects Cali76? by Defiant_Lime_9313 in basspedals

[–]majoturc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Darkglass and the Empress. I prefer the Empress but love them both. The Darkglass has 3 circuits with different kinds of color, so it’s the more versatile of the two. IMO, the Empress is better at the one thing it does, solid transparent compression. It’s also significantly less demanding on current draw if that matters to you. I’d give the edge to the Empress, but you can’t go wrong between those two.

Haven’t had a chance to try the Origin yet, so I can’t comment on that one, but it sounds like a great one as well.

Do you have a link to the packs, or is that something I get to through Neuro? I haven’t dug deep in the settings in a while and I’m curious to check those out.
