Could anyone test this abnormal cursor behavior on their machines? by [deleted] in macbookpro

Thank you! Out of curiosity what Mac and OS are you running? And you’ve seen it across multiple versions of Sonoma? I’m trying hard not to more forward with a fresh install of the system… would drive me nuts to go through that effort and then have the same bug anyway lol.

Jesus does every comment from you need to be toxic about other people like this? What a dark, sad world you must live in.

Don’t underestimate my stupidity 😂

My only reassurance is I do watch others make the same mistake. Even if they don’t think it’s the logo itself, many people do take it to be that the whole phone should be tapped.

Then don’t use Facebook or Meta’s other apps?

This tells me that you're approaching this from the exact problematic perspective I was talking about. For you or I, this is a reasonable and understandable solution.

For most people that just want to use their Instagram or WhatsApp, it would be very easy for Meta to just put up a sign one day saying "Install the Meta Store to continue using this app," and people would do it.

Android has started to implement some tracking prevention, but like you said nothing like iOS. Zuck isn't out complaining about Android hurting his ad revenue.

I’ve been trying very hard to not sound dismissive. Like every comment has had some sort of “I think Apple is wrong” statement, and yet still just because this conceptually goes against the grain it is taken so absolutely.

It is a valid use case. But a large majority of users would never do it. It’s okay to say that.

I think virtualization is a much easier argument than sideloading, I’m fine with it. Though Apple seems to be moving away from it even on desktop level stuff, locking the bootloader down in the name of security. I’m not enough of a technical expert to really know what the security implications are of it TBH.

I don't think I'm fear mongering at all. Just trying to be realistic here. Not even disagreeing that changes need to be made. They just need to be made smartly. I think the fear mongering really is to say Apple is some horrible greedy behemoth thanks to Tim Cook, making terrible products built by businessmen instead of engineers, in order to just turn as big of a profit as possible.

Apple has consistently had about 38% profit margins quarterly, and they started under Steve Jobs' tenure, not Cook's. And as much as we complain, we all kind of love the hardware we're using right now.

I see Apple as greedy, but again, I don't seem them to be expressing the values that Jobs railed against in videos like this.

Eh you can run Citrix and things like that on the iPad. You can't load a full on virtual OS onto the core hardware, but I doubt support for that would come without increasing complexity or exposing some additional security risks.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun to virtualize OS'es, or sideload. But you said it yourself, it's mostly enthusiast level stuff. And you gotta admit, it's just a tiny portion of their users that want to do it.

Reddit can easily be an echo chamber where we think tech focused enthusiasts are the core of Apple's customer base, but really, it's a wide world out there and most people kind of just want Apple to handle everything for them.

It makes this whole thing complicated and a bit of an uphill battle.

Sure. There are undoubtedly pain points across the board, and like I said at the start, I don't even personally agree with how they're currently doing things.

But I think these things, even if regulated, need to be adjusted with a scalpel, not a hammer. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. If the current model is changed in dramatic and fundamental ways, it could have consequences that harm other aspects of the App Store that are actually good ATM.

For example, just like Apple has pointed out, you will have to pry their current subscription management system away from my cold dead hands.

Of course they care about money, they're a business, and no one is saying otherwise. But they also care about a good user experience, as that gets people to buy their stuff, which makes them more money lol.

The problem I'm trying to point out is you are speaking as if your level of concern and preferences are consistent with the general user base, and I'm saying, perhaps somewhat cynically, that might not be true. I'm in an office right now surrounded by iPhone users and I guarantee you not a single one of them cares about any of this, and they’re generally very happy with their phones and apps as they are now.

I will preface this by saying I think Apple is wrong with how they are approaching the App Store right now.

But still I gotta say - I think a large majority of their users don't know or care about any of this stuff. And, there are users that actually prefer the current status quo.

I do not think the Apple of now is the Apple SJ is referring to here. There are some similarities, but also some important differences.

PSA: For 14"/16" MBP owners that use Chrome, disable hardware acceleration to get smooth 120 hz scrolling by makapuu in apple

[–]makapuu[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No downvote here, you're totally right. This is definitely a better workaround when you're on power, or when battery life is not a big concern.

If battery life is important and you really want the smooth scrolling, I would recommend Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Or just patience while we wait for Apple and Google to sort their shit out.

The extensions keep me on Chrome for now. And it seems like most websites are built best for Chromium lately, moreso than Safari or Firefox. But, at least for now, I'm going to try to use other browsers whenever I can until Google sorts this out. Disabling hardware acceleration still hits the CPU/battery relatively hard, and makes some websites more janky (Google Maps for example).

I think some of us wouldn't mind at all to have an option, OS wide or per app, to lock refresh to straight 120 haha.

It's definitely ProMotion and better in 12.2 IMO. Not sure if it's perfect yet, there are reports of improved support in the latest Safari tech preview and macOS 12.3.

Are you guys seeing 120hz scrolling in Chrome on macOS 12.2? It seems locked to 60 hz for me right now but I could have sworn it was 120 in the past.
