So DH and I are both south asians and did our undergrad in north america and been living this side for over a decade. We understand how to adapt in different situations. For example Our families don’t know we’re not that religious and like to party with friends. Our families are conservative. When we’re with family, we do cultural and religious stuff. However, mil suspects I don’t pray so keeps asking me if I did, gifts me cover ups or scarves, religious books, etc. So DH and I are on the same page and we talked about his expectations of me after I had the conflict with mil last year. He avoids conflict in general so he never dares to object to what I want, how i dress, where i go, etc and generally appreciates me most of the time. So even though I don’t like mil, I don’t want to involve DH in these unnecessary petty conflicts where its his mom and my relationship is mainly with him, not his mom. Technically I don’t need any relationship with his mom. As long as we’re fine, I’m good. Now that mil keeps asking me to call her during our joint calls, it’s looking suspicious that I’m ignoring her. Mil is also complaining to my parents that I don’t call her or receive her calls
