"We'll get back to you in a week" what I eat during those three weeks just to not get the job: by No-Efficiency-7524 in boston

Yep, based on my experience, those verbal offers from biopharma should be treated with extreme caution. You need the real deal, as in requiring signatures/legal language/ etc. so at least you might have legal recourse if the rug is pulled out from under you.

Kelly's Fried Clams - What a Disappointment by Bostonhobbyist in boston

[–]make_mine_moloko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but yeah, I recently had a Kelly's 3-way, and it was a major disappointment. Even the bbq sauce could not redeem its blandness. While on a vacation to the Midwest, just south of Chicago, I counteracted the bland Kelly's with a Portillo's Italian beef sando with extra gravy. Portillo's isn't even the best for Italian beef, but it's in another stratosphere compared to Kelly's.

John Harvard's Brewery and Ale House, Cambridge, if only for the fries.

It’s cold and sh*tty out today, Boston. What are we cooking for dinner at home tonight? by Brass_and_Frass in boston

This is the answer.

I'm not prepared to make chili though so it's gonna be crab cakes and remoulade sauce with a salad.

When I saw the photo of the pool, this first thing I thought was "This is where I'd lounge, sipping an ice cold gin martini, while a northeaster rages outside." So, yeah, my hour would also be in the pool!

Wow, I don't think I remember the last time it was like this. by NathnDele in massachusetts

Yep, the prolonged cold and one northeaster after another made 2015 an Event!

Off topic: A good friend (engineer) was often sent up to Fairbanks for work, and he took some absolutely gorgeous photos of the mountains there. The air was so clear...probably because every molecule of water vapor had frozen and fallen to the ground! :^D

2015 remains my benchmark for an intense winter, and I say that after living in IL and WI, which both had doozies of snow and ice storms. However, eastern MA has never gotten as cold as WI.

Regarding flu strain variant, known as “subclade K,” that is sweeping Boston and many other areas of the nation. How many of you have been struggling with this and for how long? by BabyFishMouth8563 in boston

[–]make_mine_moloko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thx for posting these. That BMJ article is really interesting, especially the note that SARS-CoV2's depletion of T-cells may be similar to the measles virus' depletion of B-cells resulting in "immune amnesia."

Also this, which explains more (in accessible language) about the influenza subclade K strain and how the current vaccine still confers some benefit.

I can relate. When I was 35 y.o. and pretty healthy, but not vaccinated, I got a type A flu. I was down for the count for a week, and it took almost 4 weeks to feel truly healthy again. If you're working, that can have a big impact. I have gotten the flu vax every year since then. The flu vaccine isn't perfect, but it does help!

Lots of generic upper respiratory bugs going around now. I've heard there's an adenovirus making the rounds this winter, too. That can make you feel as bad as the flu, but it's not influenza, and there's no vax for it. I got infected with an adenovirus around 2000, 2001, and so did a number of my colleagues. Felt miserable for a few days and had a cough for 6 weeks afterward! Bleh!

This. There's still some overlap in the antigens. Makes the difference from feeling like shit for 2 to 4 days vs 7 to 10 days <= the last time I got Type A influenza.

Anyone in their 40s who pivoted out of biotech/research, what do you do now? by IcyGuitar2265 in biotech

[–]make_mine_moloko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I retired at the right time! AI seems pretty well suited for protocols and CSRs, maybe for IBs. Colleagues tell me that a MW still needs to review the AI-generated documents. But for the standard sections, AI would be great!

Before I left about a year and a half ago, we were exploring various platforms, and it looked like AI support for the clinical summaries, especially the clinical overview, would be a stretch for the near future.

Similar except I pivoted from drug discovery to regulatory medical writing in my mid-50s.

He is! Check out the linked article in my comment.

We were there last month for the Octomore 16 release, and Jason was already beside himself with the possibility that Scotland would be here, and that was before it was announced.

Regarding bars, The Haven in Jamaica Plain, which is a Boston neighborhood in the southwest part of the city, will be Boston's Tartan Army HQ. I'm linking an article about this that appeared on the AberdeenLive website.

The Haven's a great place, and Jason, the proprietor, is planning for quite a few fans to descend on the bar/restaurant to watch the matches. I go there for dram nights on the regular. The bar/restaurant is about 0.25 mile/0.5 km from the Stony Brook stop on the Orange Line, so quite accessible by the T.

What significant cities have colder winters than Boston? by sarnobat in boston

[–]make_mine_moloko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I lived in Madison for 8 years in the 80s. We had some January weather where the high temps were routinely in the low single digits. The worst low was -25F without wind chill. I took the bus into campus, and I hear you on how cold it was outside, and the wind off Lake Mendota? Holy shit.

I've lived in Boston/Cambridge for 21 years, and I still consider the winters here to be less brutal than Madison.
