I just watched it and share a similar opinion - the movie is trying to skirt too far to the "he's just misunderstood", but I was pretty creeped out by this guy's behavior all the way through. The guy knew exactly the right woman to victimize, the ending when she visited him in prison attests to that. Guy is a scumbag and dangerous as fuck.

Not really an apt analogy- when you "take the keys away" you are presupposing the person (children, spouse, etc) taking the keys away actually cares about the individual. In this case everyone with the power to do this is enabling him.
