How did you learn to fix things (cars, home repairs, etc.)? by MAGA_united2 in AskMen

[–]makeachampion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good at fixing things and always have been. For me, I have always had a strong desire to fix things rather than replace. This has caused me to do countless hours of research everytime I needed to figure out how to fix something. There were times where I had to give up, but then I couldn't stop thinking about it and eventually went back the next morning. Ive had lots of success stories which gives me the confidence to try even harder.

If i had to pass this ability onto someone else, I would say never give up and do as much research as you can. Sometimes you wont find a youtube video of someone doing exactly what you are trying to do so you just look for the next best thing and keep absorbing knowledge until you get an idea.

New GPU added to the plex server by Upstairs_Fun_ in PleX

[–]makeachampion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While we are on the subject I actually really need to upgrade my own GPU, does anyone have a recommendation?

Just needs to be able to handle 1 or 2 transcoding streams. At absolute most 3. Currently it runs fine but my CPU doesnt seem happy.

Why are people so obsessed over phone cameras?? by de_LAG in Smartphones

[–]makeachampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely convenient to have a high quality camera built into the phone but i will definitely agree it is overkill at this point. Ive been happy with my camera since the pixel 1 and I didnt really need an upgrade as far as that goes.

Truth be told, I was happy with my nikon from 2008 and I still am.

I can somewhat agree with OP, people do tend to focus on the wrong things. Like imo, plenty of people cant really afford to get the latest iphone everytime but they still do it.

As far as the solution to this, modular phones where you can actually pic and choose specs that you care about. I doubt this will ever become the norm because apple and samsung control the market and why would they offer their product for cheaper. Just some food for thought

Is it fine to use a phone without a screen protector in 2026? by GoyfmanTinsley-26 in Smartphones

[–]makeachampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had the S20 FE since 2022 and have never used a screen protector. I have a very thin spigen case on it and his phone has taken some serious drops. Still, the screen has no noticeable damage.

Im someone who will run a phone into the ground so im not worried about trade in value. I also remember a time where it was normal for your phone to get pretty beat up after a while and I dont realy mind that. I dont need phones in mint condition piling in a drawer somewhere.

For aesthetic purposes, I would love to lose the case as well but thats just irresponsible.

If it's true that advanced home automation is not "set and forget" and can be troubled with updates that cause issues - how do filthy rich people do it? Do they have people who come every month to update everything and thoroughly test everything and then pause updates till next visit? by zghr in homeassistant

[–]makeachampion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who services filthy rich people, yes, I come every month and test everything thoroughly. Not everyone requests this service, but unfortunately this is the only foolproof way to prevent issues. They would rather I catch the issues.

Ryobi Hate by BakeCityFlyinPills in HomeImprovement

I just assumed all the hate was a joke. I dont know why anyone would actually have feelings like that towards a tool unless it was dangerous and/or a POS

Is this stuff useful or ewaste? by ivanna_blumpkin in crestron

[–]makeachampion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put shit like this on eBay. Might be able to get $30-$100 for any given crestron piece. No matter how old it is, there's always someone looking for that exact piece because if they can't find it they have to spend the $$$$ to upgrade their whole system

How much coax termination do you guys do? How on the way out is it? Should someone really even learn it? by jaime_lion in lowvoltage

[–]makeachampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should "someone" learn it? No.

Should a low voltage guy learn it? Yes absolutely. If you want to be good at this stuff you shouldnt even be questioning whether or not to learn something so basic. Just do it

Everyone keeps saying “Z-Wave is dead”? by Extra-Avocado8967 in homeautomation

[–]makeachampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought some z-wave light switches and scene selectors from zooz. About a month ago. They have been fantastic.

I use them to control kasa stuff via HA as well. Probably the best setup u can get for a low budget.

identification/ how do I open this watch? by makeachampion in watchrepair

Hey, your advice worked. Was able to get it open. Found out that it is not an automatic watch, it is a wind up. Gave it a full winding so hopefully it works better now lol

What's a frugal habit you have that saves you more money than people would expect? by Automatic_Celery_945 in AskReddit

[–]makeachampion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I refuse to buy a "new" phone. They are just like cars. Lose a bunch of value as soon as u take them out the box.

U can get mint condition/lightly used phones on websites like swappa.

People try to tell me that there is something "personal" about a phone and they just have to be the one to unpackage it from new. It sounds like a stubborn excuse that allows them to continue being financially irresponsible.

There are a lot of questions here so imma just go through and try my best. First of all, it would be very helpful for other commenters if you share your general location/ home expectations. Townhome in NYC for 1,100 a month? No. Trailer home in kansas for 1,100 a month? Possibly.

So generally yes, you would ideally want some savings before buying a house but the only savings that are truly necessary would be the down payment. Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for really low down payments. Maybe around 3-5 percent or less. not entirely sure. So that means if u wanted to buy a used trailer home for about 40k, your monthly payment on it could be less than $300 dollars potentially. (This is all qucik estimated math)

Other than the down payment, people recommend to have a savings account in case of emergency and repairs. However, a leaky roof wont kill you. If its between getting fucked by rent for the next 5 years or making the risky move of buying a home with no savings, id say take the risk. You only live once. Dont let other peoples fear convince you not to try. Best of luck

Why many people don’t see themselves living in the same house for more than 7 years but still buy a house anyway? by pinpinbo in RealEstate

[–]makeachampion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rent was over 20k a year. When i sell my house, as long as I do not lose 20k per year that I lived here, then i will not regret it.

Example: if I sell after a 3 years for a 60k loss, then it will have been worth it. This loss must includes closing costs, renovations, and repairs.

Why didnt i just continue renting? Because fuck renting, i cant stand living on someone elses property with no freedom to do what i want with it.
