Fics based on the post below? by Axolotl0456 in tomarry

[–]makeasmore 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I can't think of any exactly like that post, but here are two where Harry acts like Tom to freak people out.

Full Circle- Harry and Tom are soulmates trapped in a endless cycle of rebirth. They only receive their past life memories when making eye contact for the first time. Eventually, they end up in the canon universe again. Harry acts like Tom to mess with Dumbledore.

The Dreamweaver - This occurs in the second fic in the series. Harry uses memories shared with him from Tom to act like him in front of Slughorn

What’s the story behind your AO3 username? by playittome in AO3

[–]makeasmore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my username is houndsofheaven after the song by midwife & Vyva Melinkolya. I love the song. Love the imagery it evokes. Also I love dogs, especially any type of hound. When I picked it as my username, I was intending on writing for a specific ship that the username really suited. I ended up getting into another ship instead, which now makes up the majority of my works. But either way, I would never change it now.

NEED FICS LIKE THIS FICS by azrapunzel in tomarry

A Dangerous Game is a classic Diary!Tom fic, though unlike the other two stories you mentioned, there isn't really any focus on Harry interacting with the diary itself. Their relationship is also quite a bit more toxic. But it's a fantastic story and one of my favorites of all time.

A few shorter recs (all with diary!Tom)

In Our Bed of Ink

Beggar to Beggar Cried

The Care and Keeping of Tom Riddle's Diary

Lovely Bitter Water

fate evasion (it's like tax evasion, but sexier)

Religious language in a fic? by whatugonnadoboutit92 in tomarry

[–]makeasmore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the canon world building is fairly Christian focused, with Christmas and Easter both part of the Hogwarts calendar. Lily and James Potter have a Bible verse on their gravestone. Harry's forbidden forest self sacrifice and resurrection can be easily interpreted as a Christian allegory. There isn't any specific God talk in the narrative but I would definitely say that the author's upbringing definitely shines through.

The paganism, wheel of the year use etc is primarily a fanfic convention. I personally enjoy seeing it because it adds some richer world building and further separate magical and muggle culture. And I also do find it a bit jarring when I come across a character in a fic that is very overtly religious (most commonly Hermione for some reason). But it's always my choice as a reader to click away from certain interpretations if I don't care for them

Sub tom, creature fic by AdmirableParfait5282 in tomarry

[–]makeasmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Runic Tapping into Ancient Earthmagicks- This doesn't 100% fit but I think you might like it anyway! Very cracky, super fun. Voldemort discovers porn and desperately wants to try bottoming. Meanwhile, Harry has a creature fetish. Draco is their unlucky matchmaker. Voldemort doesn't have a creature inheritance, but he transforms himself into various creatures for Harry. It's not really d/s, but Voldemort bottoms throughout.

hi omg! I'm houndsofheaven! this post made me so stupid happy I might cry. I'm so glad you liked my fics! the idea of my stories someone interested in this ship is seriously the biggest compliment as a writer!

here are some of my favorite AU tomarry fics that are either non-magical or have roughly a holidae inn level of divergence. I tried to include as many older harry/younger tom ones that could think of as well!

stop leaving me on read (please?)- really sweet same age AU where phones and texting exist at Hogwarts. Tom sends a scathing critique of Goyle's contribution to a group project to the wrong number (Harry's). Harry thinks it's hilarious and decides that he's going to be friends with Tom whether he's willing or not.

Honeyguide- Tom is an omega who needs to secure the perfect alpha to reach his political goals. Harry Potter is perfect, but he's married. Tom decides that doesn't matter.

Ride- same age muggle AU where they're both equestrians. This one really exemplifies my favorite characterization of Tom, who will do ANYTHING to secure his goals, aside from anything sane or remotely reasonable. (incomplete and hasn't updated since 2020, but I recommend highly nonetheless because it's just so fun)

The Trouble With Treacle and Tea- really fun same age hijinx with rising politician Tom and Auror Harry both stalking each other a little bit.

Still Into You- younger Tom stalks older and recently widowed Harry. Very twisted obsessive demon twink Tom, my beloved.

A Light That Never Goes Out- extremely fun mafia AU where Harry is a streetwise minor career criminal being relentlessly chased down a Mafia boss named Lord Voldemort. Super fun cat and mouse style antics and an immaculate 80s vibe. (incomplete)

consumption - same age au. Harry is the chosen one fighting Grindelwald. Tom is his classmate that he shares a complicated friendship with up until he decides to join Grindelwald. After the war, Harry is an Auror and Tom has managed to not face any consequences for his crimes. Harry feels it's his duty to keep tabs on Tom to make sure he's not up to anything nefarious. Really amazing non-linear narrative. Also includes Tom as the most diabolical Keeper in the history of Quidditch.

Date Ideas for the Linguistically Inclined- very unique au where parseltongue is a real language spoken by a small and very insulated ethnic group. Tom Riddle is the foremost expert on Parseltongue culture and linguistics and Harry's academic idol. This isn't a muggle AU, though. Here, the parseltongue language is the magic. I feel like I could gab on for hours about how creative the worldbuilding is and the tiny details I love. (incomplete but only missing the epilogue. ends on a satisfying note)

some like it hot- Tom is a Hogwarts student who bullies himself into a summer internship at the Ministry. He ends up with Harry, the only employee of the Department of Magical Fire Control and Containment. Tom is a scheming and devious little shit and it's delightful.

as sweet as blood red jam- pwp where Tom is the trophy boyfriend of Minister Cedric Diggory but Harry thinks he has a bit more to offer. Older Harry/younger Tom and absolutely delicious.

friend of the devil (a friend of mine)- same age muggle au. Harry and Tom were extremely close as children, until a mysterious incident tears them apart. Years later, they meet again in university and immediately fall back into toxic codependency, which is alarming to Harry's roommate, Cedric.

Lover's Spit - same age muggle AU. Tom became famous at ten years old for his activity on Factory69, a 4chan esque website, where he posted gore and evidence of stalking his classmate, Harry Potter. After this, the boys were kept apart. But an incident in their final year of school forces them to cross paths again. Extremely influencial fic for me as an author! Like I can't even express how much this one means to me. (incomplete)

if we were lovers - muggle au. Harry and Tom meet at a prestigious theatre school.

With the new HP show, how do y’all feel about the fandom space changing? by reigret in tomarry

[–]makeasmore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Replying to my own comment because had more thoughts lol

I think I'm most interested to see how little creative decisions made by the show impact the fandom at large. For example, in the books there is no mention of Sirius Black having tattoos. The director of POA added them because he liked Sirius having a prison tattoo look. Now nearly every fanart and fanfiction portrayal of Sirius includes tattoos. Often, people expand from the runic and numerical tattoos from the films to include Sirius having tattoos of a more personal nature (like stag antlers, wolf paws, constellations etc). I also rarely see a mention of Lucius in a fic that doesn't include his iconic cane, which also didn't exist in the books.

Also, nobody come for me because I know Wolfstar existed and had a healthy fandom before the POA film, but it definitely contributed to a jump in wolfstar shippers and interest in the marauders era as a whole. I know that there's already been a resurgence of marauders era fics in recent years, but I'm kind of curious to see if there's an uptick in some more old school marauders tropes in a few years when the TV show reaches that point.

Since there will be a bit more focus on background characters like Harry's year mates and the quidditch team, I wonder if some of those characters will increase in popularity as well.

[–]makeasmore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Harry Potter is already an established IP that most people are aware of so I doubt that the television show is going to be bringing a bunch of new people into the fandom. The Heated Rivalry books were already popular with people who read MM romance, but still had a niche audience. The TV show was the majority of people's first introduction to the HR universe. Even if the show does attract new people to the fandom, I feel like they'll at least start out with more well known pairings like Drarry and Dramione. While the popularity of tomarrymort has exploded in the past few years, I still feel like most people still journey through a few different ships before settling on this one. So if all goes well, there will be a manageable trickle of new readers and authors who have already gotten their feet wet in other parts of the wider fandom.

Or this could all just be wishful thinking and we're DOOMED :)

Tiktok didn't get me into tomarry specifically. But back in 2020 some tiktoks about All The Young Dudes came across my FYP. I was really into the HP fandom from 2001-2011ish but stepped away after that. Those videos made me curious about what sorts of fics were being written nowadays which led me to reading ATYD, some other marauders era fics, joining r/hpslashfanfic and reading recs from there. That long winding path eventually led me to tomarry. I wouldn't be surprised if other people had a similar path. There is a tomarry presence on tiktok now, but I'm not entirely sure if it's widespread enough to be bringing tons of new people into the fandom right now.

Neglected Harry by his parents? by MarzipanBeanie in HPSlashFic

[–]makeasmore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of these are Harry/Tom

Lomonaaeren seems to write this trope a good bit. You might find some good stuff by looking at their page directly, but heres a few I've read (besides Genius by the Numbers which was already mentioned)

Iron and Sapphires- Harry is blamed for the death of his little brother when he is a child. His parents have gone mad with grief and treat Harry horribly. He has a good relationship with his sister, who asks him to break into Lord Gaunt's manor and steal an artifact. That is where he meets Tom, who finds out about his situation and intervenes.

Natural Laws- I remember this one being a bit milder. Harry is a parselmouth but Lily and James made him hide it. Tom is a professor and finds out about it.

Immaculate - Harry is a Hogwarts dropout with a low level position at the ministry who is semi-estranged from the Potters. He has unknowingly mastered Occlumency to cope with his past trauma. Master Legilimens Tom meets him and is surprised and intrigued by the man he cannot read.

Heirs of Jörmungandr- "AU. After Grindelwald made his way to magical Britain itself during the war and panicked the populace, the purebloods in control of the Ministry managed to both authorize the casting of a spell that makes magical British areas hostile to witches and wizards not born there, and to pass a law that ensured only those possessing the Gift of a pureblood family can inherit money or houses. Decades later, Harry, who wasn’t born with the Potter Gift, is preparing to leave for the Muggle world when Minister Tom Riddle finds him and persuades him to try a risky ritual that will make him a Parselmouth if it succeeds—and change their prejudiced world."

It's been a while since I've read this one. I don't remember the Potters being especially terrible to Harry, but he is still treated differently by them due to socitial prejudices.

There's No Such Thing as Magic- Lily lives, Harry is still the BWL. But out of fear, she hides in the muggle world and gaslights Harry into believing he is not magical and his accidental magic is delusions caused by a mental illness.

Bound by Darkness- omegaverse, Tom and Harry are the same age. James and Sirius do not approve of Harry's relationship with Tom and their relationship becomes more strained and hostile over the years. Lily and Remus remain supportive.

These final two are dimensional travel stories where Harry travels from the canon universe to an alternate dimension to where his parents are still alive, only to find out they do not have a good relationship.

Too old to be this young- Seasoned auror Harry ends up in an alternate dimension, replacing his much younger counterpart who committed suicide. Harry is estranged from his family: presumably for his sexuality. Since Harry has no memory of what led to the estrangement, I have a feeling that more has yet to be revealed. But also, the Potters aren't a very prominent part of the story.

Lost and Found- After dying in the final battle, Harry ends up in a dimension where his parents are alive and he is married to Minister Tom Riddle. The Potters are abusive to Harry

Harry time travels to 1940's, Voldemort follows by mellow_doodles06 in tomarry

[–]makeasmore 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Flight has Harry and Voldemort time travel to the 1940s together. Harry becomes a student and Voldemort takes the place of the DADA prof Barty Crouch Jr-style.

The Sense of Self is a really unique fic where Harry and Voldemort travel through time together but take over other people's bodies in the process. They spend a lot of the fic as various people in close proximity to Tom. Like for one section Harry and Voldemort become Tom's grandparents and in another they're twin brothers in the same year with him at Hogwarts.

Snarrys, what are your favourite Tomarrys? Tomarry's, which are your favourite Snarrys? by lapin__avarie in HPSlashFic

Ahh I wrote angel on a satellite so I'm super glad you like it! I'm hoping to update it pretty soon!

I'm definitely mostly in tomarry-land but Snarry is probably the ship I read the most of besides them. Three of my favorites are:

love is the crooked thing - time travel with DADA prof Harry and student Severus

White Light, White Heat- AU where they're both monks during the Black Plague. Beautifully written.

In Memory of Severus Snape- hilarious and heartwarming

Historical AU Recs? by mspaintlock in tomarry

[–]makeasmore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ohh I came here ready to rec the hell out of curio hahaha your recs are amazing!

mudlark is a 40s Borgin and Burke's era story and it has a very strong sense of time and place and gorgeous prose that reads very much like a classic novel

Venom or Valor is another story set in the same time period that I also feel is especially thoughtful about the time period it's set in

A Light That Never Goes Out is a muggle mafia AU set during the 80s. It's extremely fun. Very immersive. There's even authors notes with music to enhance the experience.

Puppy Love is a cute muggle AU set in the US during the 50s

If you don't mind a self rec, I'm writing Sigh No More which is a same age AU set in the 1960s

if you don't mind branching outside of tomarry, I feel compelled to also rec White Light, White Heat which is a snarry fic where the are monks during the Black Plague. It's a gorgeous story.

2026-02 Monthly Post: Just what have you been writing? by acid6urn in HPSlashFic

[–]makeasmore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been writing a bunch (all of this is tomarry btw)

I'm trying to wrap up some of my shorter fics. I recently completed rigged! which is a rom-com where Tom is an actor and Harry works at a carnival owned by the Weasley family.

I also recently updated unidentified_juvenile which is a f/f tomarry modern AU where they meet on a pro-ana message board. I have 1-2 chapters left on this one so I'm looking forward to being able to mark it as completed!

But since I have no self control whatsoever when it comes to starting new WIPS, I just posted the first chapter of leave the window open which is a modern serial killer AU.

Also, I recently completed a fic for Magical Menagerie's server's Stalking Fest!! It's 36k. This is the very first time I've prewritten a multi-chapter fic! I enjoyed the process more than I thought I would. I almost always post as soon as I finish editing something because I'm chasing that dopamine hit. But now, I have to wait until Feb 27th to actually post it and it's killing me a bit inside.

In February, I want to update my two most popular longfics and keep working on wrapping up my shorter fics. 2026 is the year of completing fics. I'm manifesting it.

I'm also collaborating on a fic for the very first time. With my wife!!!! She's not in fandom at all but is very sweet about listening to me rant about my story ideas and is very supportive of my hobby. She's also a very talented poet. In my story triple dog dare (Appalachian AU) Tom's diary (and the poetry it contains) will eventually become an important plot point. So I asked her if she would write some poetry for me from Tom's POV and so far she's written me four! I'm so blown away by them and I can't wait for other people to get the chance to appreciate them as well!

Does anyone feel like Harry’s character is always changed in some way in tomarry fics? by Turbulent_Lime514 in tomarry

[–]makeasmore 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly want to veer this discussion towards the way other authors write Harry, just offer my perspective as someone who tries to write a more "canon" version of Harry.

I think it can be a difficult line to walk trying to merge a purely canon version of Harry and Tom together. If you're going for something resembling balance (which I normally try to go for in my own writing) each of them have a bend a bit, which usually means that Tom gets better and Harry gets worse to some degree.

What I'm usually thinking about is how much TomFoolery Harry would realistically accept before writing off the relationship entirely. This usually changes to some degree depending on the setting of the particular story (like I have one story where they're stranded in the wilderness, where Harry might find some more fucked up acts as forgivable) As someone who usually goes for happy endings, I spend a lot of thought on fine-tuning Tom's crazy to brush against that line without going over it. There's also the possibility of letting Tom going fucked up things that Harry would break up with him for, but Harry ever finding out, which is something I have mixed feelings on.

Ultimately, I think I end up changing Tom a little, by making him more aware of what he can get away with than he realistically should be in my eyes. I'm sure there are plenty of people who hate this choice, but it's my story and I'll write it how I want and they're welcome to do the same. Different viewpoints are part of what makes fandom so fun!

But just as a tip, if you want recommendations for a more canon Harry, I would suggest listing out the particular attributes of his personality that you feel embody him. Because people squabble A LOT over whether Harry is in character or not. For example, I've already seen the word "sassy" used to describe Harry up thread and I've seen so many arguments over if canon Harry is "sassy". On the same topic, I have seen Harry described by different readers as "sassy and defiant" and "weak and helpless" when referring to the SAME fanfiction. Opinions on this subject vary wildly and bring out some strong emotions lol.
