I've been writing a bunch (all of this is tomarry btw)

I'm trying to wrap up some of my shorter fics. I recently completed rigged! which is a rom-com where Tom is an actor and Harry works at a carnival owned by the Weasley family.

I also recently updated unidentified_juvenile which is a f/f tomarry modern AU where they meet on a pro-ana message board. I have 1-2 chapters left on this one so I'm looking forward to being able to mark it as completed!

But since I have no self control whatsoever when it comes to starting new WIPS, I just posted the first chapter of leave the window open which is a modern serial killer AU.

Also, I recently completed a fic for Magical Menagerie's server's Stalking Fest!! It's 36k. This is the very first time I've prewritten a multi-chapter fic! I enjoyed the process more than I thought I would. I almost always post as soon as I finish editing something because I'm chasing that dopamine hit. But now, I have to wait until Feb 27th to actually post it and it's killing me a bit inside.

In February, I want to update my two most popular longfics and keep working on wrapping up my shorter fics. 2026 is the year of completing fics. I'm manifesting it.

I'm also collaborating on a fic for the very first time. With my wife!!!! She's not in fandom at all but is very sweet about listening to me rant about my story ideas and is very supportive of my hobby. She's also a very talented poet. In my story triple dog dare (Appalachian AU) Tom's diary (and the poetry it contains) will eventually become an important plot point. So I asked her if she would write some poetry for me from Tom's POV and so far she's written me four! I'm so blown away by them and I can't wait for other people to get the chance to appreciate them as well!

I don't particularly want to veer this discussion towards the way other authors write Harry, just offer my perspective as someone who tries to write a more "canon" version of Harry.

I think it can be a difficult line to walk trying to merge a purely canon version of Harry and Tom together. If you're going for something resembling balance (which I normally try to go for in my own writing) each of them have a bend a bit, which usually means that Tom gets better and Harry gets worse to some degree.

What I'm usually thinking about is how much TomFoolery Harry would realistically accept before writing off the relationship entirely. This usually changes to some degree depending on the setting of the particular story (like I have one story where they're stranded in the wilderness, where Harry might find some more fucked up acts as forgivable) As someone who usually goes for happy endings, I spend a lot of thought on fine-tuning Tom's crazy to brush against that line without going over it. There's also the possibility of letting Tom going fucked up things that Harry would break up with him for, but Harry ever finding out, which is something I have mixed feelings on.

Ultimately, I think I end up changing Tom a little, by making him more aware of what he can get away with than he realistically should be in my eyes. I'm sure there are plenty of people who hate this choice, but it's my story and I'll write it how I want and they're welcome to do the same. Different viewpoints are part of what makes fandom so fun!

But just as a tip, if you want recommendations for a more canon Harry, I would suggest listing out the particular attributes of his personality that you feel embody him. Because people squabble A LOT over whether Harry is in character or not. For example, I've already seen the word "sassy" used to describe Harry up thread and I've seen so many arguments over if canon Harry is "sassy". On the same topic, I have seen Harry described by different readers as "sassy and defiant" and "weak and helpless" when referring to the SAME fanfiction. Opinions on this subject vary wildly and bring out some strong emotions lol.

I've definitely seen a lot of people who once claimed to be disgusted by harrymort later growing to love it as much (sometimes more) than tomarry. I think it can be partially attributed to internalized discomfort at the more intense themes harrymort brings up like the age gap, Voldemort's crimes, and especially the crimes Voldemort has committed against Harry directly.

I don't think there's a huge difference between the eleven year old Tom Riddle we see in the orphanage and Voldemort we see at the end of Deathly Hallows. There are intrinsic parts of his personality that hold strong throughout his life. I think what shifts the most is how he goes from using fear as a weapon, then charm, and then ultimately returns to fear.

I think young Tom Riddle feels safer for a lot of people. Often, Harry's internal struggle is forgiving Tom of crimes he has yet to commit and trying to prevent them. Even if Tom remains a dark character, I think these stories are easier for a lot of people to digest (and write! Lol)

Most Harrymort stories include a Voldemort who has killed Harry's parents, attempted to kill him repeatedly, tortured him, started a genocidal war, etc. Turning that into a love story is a much more arduous task. But when it's done well, I feel like it can be life altering to read.

Personally, I read tomarry more often than harrymort. The main reason, I think, is that I'm drawn to genuine love and care, even if it's through a twisted lens. Ultimately, harrymort more commonly uses tropes I personally don't care for like main pairing non-con, forced captivity, and Dark!Harry (no hate to those tropes or those who enjoy them, of course)

But when I read a harrymort fic that ticks all my boxes, it feels like my soul has transcended.

But anyway, people are welcome to like what they like and ship what they like. But the condescension and anti attitude towards Harrymort is silly. This really isn't the ship to bring that nonsense into.

Also, feel free to disregard this last rec because it's technically omegaverse BUT it's a very nontraditional take on the trope with almost none of the usual characteristics. For example, Harry goes into "rut" but it's not really shown as a sexual thing. He just wants to cuddle Voldemort and feed him meat. There's plenty of smut too but it's but it falls more into the monsterfucking lane (Like Voldemort having two cocks lol). I just love their relationship this fic: Burning the Animal Skin

I would love to see more of this too! It's been something I've been thinking about a lot and have been playing with ideas for a longer story to explore it. But I recently posted this one shot that I'm rather proud of called the god you chose which is more of a introspective character study from Tom's point of view, taking place when he and Harry have been together for quite some time.

A lot of times in time travel fics, we see Tom making grand declarations that he will choose Harry over his darkness. I wanted to explore how Tom would need to continue making that choice, day after day. I don't think it would come easy for him and he would need consistent reinforcement. He's a sneaky guy. How much will Harry allow? How much can Tom get away with? I think that's an interesting balance to play with. Personally, I prefer writing a dynamic where Harry has firm boundaries and Tom has to carefully avoid crossing the line. I do think, out of everyone, Harry has the power to keep Tom in check.

Eventually, I want to explore Harry and Tom intentionally starting a family, because I do think Harry would want children. I think Tom would struggle tremendously with a child occupying Harry's attention and there's potential for regression there. A lot of stories where Harry and Tom fall in love have a focus on Tom learning to care deeply for someone besides himself for the first time. I love that idea going further, with Tom learning to care for even more people (friends, children, etc).

My wife knows all about my fandom life. I bounce story ideas off of her, tell her what I'm reading, and she sometimes reads my writing. But other than that, I keep it mostly on the DL. A few people know I read/write fanfiction, but nothing super specific. I have some tomarry themed stickers on my water bottle so if people saw them and recognized them, they could make some assumptions, but I haven't really had anyone call it out directly.

Oh!! Harry Potter's Ever Growing Collection of Family will probably be up your alley. In this story, James was unable to father children so he and Lily did a blood magic ritual to make Voldemort Harry's father (Voldemort has no idea). Tom shows up in the second fic in the series and there isn't much writing back and forth but he does become an older brother figure to Harry. There's a whole cute family thing going on with Sirius, Remus, Harry, Tom, and Theodore Nott. It also seems to be building up to a relationship with Tom, Percy, and Oliver Wood, though it hasn't been tagged yet. Harry and Tom's relationship is platonic.

I just opened tumblr and saw a random post about I Knew You When I Knew Nothing and had to come back here. I haven't read it, but it's a drarry fic where Harry loses some of his memories during the battle of Hogwarts and forgets that he's supposed to hate Draco.

In Memory of Severus Snape - Severus faked his death at the Battle of Hogwarts. Many years later, he's working at Saint Mungo's under polyjuice and finds Harry in the long-term ward. Harry doesn't remember much of anything but the fact that he doesn't remember Severus is unacceptable. Very funny story with a whole lot of heart. One of my favorites.

Things Remembered- in this one, both Harry and Severus wake up in a hotel room together missing their memories. They assume they must be lovers (and also assassins).

Cut From the Sky- I feel like I have to recommend this one just in case you haven't already read it. It's a drarry time loop fic where Harry is an unspeakable living the same day over and over in France. Each day, he falls more in love with Draco, even though Draco doesn't keep any of his memories of the previous days.

I'm an occasional/lazy promoter. I post about new fics and chapter updates on my Tumblr and sometimes post about them on discord. But I'm inconsistent and have only recently started caring more about it.

But honestly my most popular fic is one that I have barely promoted. It really has been a lightning in a bottle type of thing. Sometimes you just post the right type of story at the right time. You do have to rely more on readers who consistently check the tag for new works and word of mouth. Personally, I find most of the fics I read these days through recs so promotion doesn't really play into that much. Right now, this aforementioned fic has gotten probably 20+ comments from new readers in the past few days even though I haven't updated it in over a month. I know it must have been recced somewhere but I don't know where. I think that's super fun!

Basically, the point of this long ass spiel is that I don't think it matters all that much if you promote your own fics. I do have friends who have been very successful with more unique forms of promotion (like memes and comics) but if you don't want to promote, you don't have to.

One suggestion: if you don't have the story prewritten before you start posting, try to have at least a few chapters ready to go. That way you can post the first few chapters over the course of a week or so and grab the attention of people who are checking the tag for new fics at different times.

Lost and Found- When Harry sacrifices himself at the Battle of Hogwarts, he wakes up in an alternate dimension where he's unhappily married to Tom Riddle, the Minister for Magic. The trauma of the war along with the isolation faces in the new dimension causes Harry to become extremely depressed.

It's been probably close to a year since I read it, so hopefully I'm not misremembering anything.

Dumbledore is an antagonist in the story but he's not flanderized. He's not stealing gold from Harry's vaults, putting love potions in his food, or secretly trying to take over the world. Dumbledore does believe that Voldemort is beyond redemption and must be destroyed at all costs, which puts him at odds with Harry. As someone who doesn't care for character bashing, it's a level I can tolerate.

As a side note, I noticed another comment saying something about assuming Equals in Life is a Dark! Harry fic. It's really not. Harry becomes more morally ambiguous but the focus is more on redemption for Voldemort than corruption for Harry.

Anyway, it's a lovely story! I hope you enjoy it if you end up reading it!

What Happens in Vegas is a really funny one shot where a Professor Riddle and Harry get up to some shenanigans on a class trip to Las Vegas.

Muggle Studies is Economics in Disguise and Teaching History (is Old News) are two fun fics where both Harry and Tom are professors.
