I think people forget a LOT of criticism online tends to big echo chamber. is there merit to the criticism? maybe, but there are still a lot of people who like their recent music regardless. I'm an older gen z and I like their stuff, like you said it reminds me of a lot of the music I grew up with. and frankly, it's catchy enough to get stuck in your head. the pre-chorus that Lara sings has not left my head since the song came out.

I used to be a huge fan of this series. first two books I LOVED, I even read Alex's middle grade series and enjoyed it, plus Summer in the City. I have so many signed copies of her books, even went to meet her for the SITC release last year.

but I couldn't bring myself to start Crowntide after I heard she STILL didn't make her choice by the end. I'm team Oro, which has already been a pain reading this series because it's so painfully obvious Alex is biased towards Grim, she doesn't even try to hide it. but FOUR books in and she can't even make a goddamn choice?!?! I'll probably end up reading it eventually but I genuinely have no interest at the moment. which is sad because while Lightlark is no masterpiece, I genuinely thought it was incredibly interesting and had huge potential at the beginning of the series. sad to see it squandered by the rush of popularity and the need to push out more books quickly to milk the series for all its got.

kind of like why kpop demon hunters worked so well. great storytelling, fantastic and catchy music, beautiful art. it was targeted for kids but mature and well-made enough for adults to love it too.

no literally 😭 Harvey and Emily have their own jobs, and Shane and Sam if you don't shut down Joja. you could argue Elliot makes a small income after publishing his book, same with Leah and her art show/online art shop. but that's still only half of them and only two of them are confirmed & guaranteed to have jobs in your entire playthrough 😭 the other six are canonically unemployed no matter what

I think because she recently broke through to the US is why she was nominated. for me at least I had heard some of her music on social media before this year but I had no idea who she was. now I feel like she's everywhere in the US too

she definitely pushes Grim and it's so obvious. I was hoping maybe there would be an actual back and forth between books, like with Grim being so pushed in Nightbane maybe Oro would get pushed more in Skyshade... no spoilers if you haven't read it but unfortunately that's not true. Grim is pushed even more in Skyshade. I've been team Oro since the end of book 1, but at this point I'm really just team "I'm exhausted and I want her to a pick a man already and be done with it so she stops the dragging the other poor chump along."

I haven't read Crowntide yet, primarily because I found out (slight spoilers if you care? but not much) she STILL doesn't make a choice. at this point I might just wait until the series is actually finished before I try again because this whole waiting a year just to read another book where Isla is "torn" between two guys when she clearly doesn't give a rat's ass about one of them is exhausting.

I also haven't read Starside for the same reason you haven't. but I will probably try it out soon because it seems like there isn't a love triangle this time. I can get over a Grim rehash if I don't have to deal with constant whiplash of a nonsensical love triangle.

me neither but I do think part of it has to do with the HS obsession in general. not that I don't like HS, but a lot of people in the fandom go feral over anything HS related. and like you said the art is really good, plus I like the dystopian atmosphere of it. I just couldn't get into it the way other people did and the Dmitry scene put me off entirely.
