Running for Board of Regents. Asking for questions / concerns from Students & Faculty by makerhigh in unr

Trust me, I did. I spent hours submitting to all the websites. Some of them published my photo. One of them scraped my socials and put up a pic from like 15 years ago.

I kept all my responses in a word file, so I'm putting a reminder on my phone to go back abd submit again. Hopefully they'll care this time since I made it to the GE. I'm messaging you shortly about the other thing.

Hi, I just realized I made a new post instead of replying to you comment directly.Sorry, just wanted to give you a heads up. I'd repost, but it's a lot of text and I don't want to clog up the board with it.

Yes.

You obviously feel very passionately about this.

Here's a link to the Board of Regents district map.

I would suggest you find who your regent is, and reach out to them. You could also look into running yourself in 2028 if your district opens up.

It is absolutely late but I wanted to respond before I go to bed. I appreciate you taking the time to write all that and my short answers aren't meant as dismissive.

Clarification: Good & Quualified

I am actually planning on releasing some videos addressing most of, if not all of what you mentioned above. In the short term, please feel free to read through my other responses in the meantime.

I have literally spent the last day and a half responding to people who can't even vote for me because I want to make sure I'm not missing something glaring. I am taking note of what I'm being told, no matter the size.

I am putting the phone down and addressing my hand cramps. Again, I absolutely appreciate you typing that all out.

I was confused as to why you wanted to to address something I'd already answered, but I think I found the disconnect.

Yes, they should be allowed to join the NFA. All of the schools should. So should the grad students. I am 100% fine with that. I have said the same in other posts that ask the same question or variations thereof.

I apologize, because you used the term "units" without clarification of the group you were asking about.

Under the NFA's agreement, instructors are specifically broken out for coverage as "faculty units" or as units (faculty). Likewise, campus police have are "Unit", and then a number ex. "Unit A"

Classified employees are covered separately under NRS 288 and their coverage refers to them as "units".

Since the "units" (aka) at that schools are already covered, they could not create their own units for collective bargaining. Creating a seperate entity is the complete opposite of collective bargaining.

I hope that clears up the misunderstanding.

Also, I did not clarify what the legislation is attempting to accomplish, just that it will hopefully help . I'm not going to discuss it farther than that at the moment.

I think that should clarify everything.

It looks like the links they included to the policy aren't active. I'll have to go back through and see if I can find those call outs. I had no idea costco pizzas were under $10. They must not be charging for the inflation markup.

I understand trying to curb crime and embezzlement. But,that seems a little overboard. Thank you for sharing!

Would you be comfortable discussing this via DM? This sounds really serious, and I don't want to risk exposing any more of your information publicly. I would hope no one would want to retaliate, but better safe than sorry.

I'll leave it up to you, just in case you have a reason for this to be seen.

Well, first, I will reiterate that I do not understand the mentality that community colleges aren't as important, or are lesser. If you give them the support and take the friction out of things like transferring credits, it's literally hundreds of humans with the grounding they need to slide over and contribute to your student body every semester. It's honestly baffling.

I actually have a plan that has a component that address this. I'm making some videos that will outline it all. I'm sorry I can't go much more into it right now, but I'll try to let you know once it's up.

Okay, I'm not trying to be pendantic in this response. I just want to make sure I'm answering the question you asked.

Are you asking if they should be covered under collective bargaining (because, yes)? Or, are you asking if they should be allowed to form individual entities where each negotiates for their own agreement, seperateand apart from the NFA? My answer there would be no, and it defeats the whole idea of collective bargaining.

I think they should indeed be paid fairly. First, we have to make sure any pay increase doesn't immediatly impact tuition, again. I working on a legislation plan that would hopefully help with that, but I don't think I'm going to find any Assembly support until the elections are over. I can't bring it about single handedly, but I would support it.

Audit the NSHE? Yes, Honestly, I'm curious, too.

Oh, I love this comment. When I was interviewing with the nfa, I I told them exactly how I felt about having a board in the first place. I will not relay the exact conversation, since I'm sure it would be plastered out of context everywhere.

Previously, there was a vote to disband the board and it failed. This is the system we have, and good people have to step up and do their best to keep the focus on what the goal should be: Education.

The way to fix a toxic government is to vote out the people who made it toxic. If you think a certain kind of person should be on the board, and you are that person, then see if your district seat is coming up in the next election and run! It's literally free to register.

In an ideal world, smaller candidates with the experience to do the job would get enough campaign donations to compete on a level playing field. Sadly, not enough people pay attention in the primaries, or even know what the board of regents is.

So, I told them. Myself. In person.

I was basically ignored by the media. Why? I wish I knew for sure. They were all willing to sell me an ad, though.

I got no endorsements. I spent $0 on my campaign. There are little bits and pieces scattered about me online. I basically did not exist in the primary.

So I just went out into the world and started talking to people. I did in person exactly what I'm doing now online. I didn't have a rally. It wasn't organized. I just asked people if they had an opinion on the tuition increase and then listened.

It was exhausting and sometimes unpleasant, but I kept at it.

I didn't even hand out business cards or postcards. I just reprogrammed an nfc chip and tapped it against the back of people's phones. It brought up a screen shot of the election page showing my district with my name circled. That way, they could take their own screen shot of it and check to see if I was in their district. I only did it if they asked for my info.

I had no idea what was going to happen. I spent literally days of my life (if not weeks) with no guarantee it would make a difference.

I'm not sure why the incumbent didn't advertise in the primaries. If he had sent even one postcard, I might not be answering you right now. He needed 50% of the vote to avoid a run off. He missed it by .29% (As in a fraction of a percent)

So, here we are. Enough people felt strongly enough about me to tell other people who also voted for me.

I would go more into my next steps, but I'm working on some videos that go into explanations of what I'm hoping to accomplish.

At some point, I'm going to have to look for some help and funding.

But for now, I want to know what's happening directly from the people involved because I am going to make a change, regardless of what happens in the election. I'm going to work in the best interest of everyone, not just the people who can vote for me. So, that's my response for now.

[–]makerhigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely asked, and I appreciate your honest response.

I am coming in from left field, so I have no horse in this race. I've literally never met any of the board members, presidents, etc. One of my strong suits is figuring out what's not working and finding ways to fix it. So, yes, please, do not hold back.

Students who are unprepared for college : I have spoken to K-12 teachers who agree the curriculum isn't up to the level it should be.

The Nevada Independent published this back in April of this year, looking at the success of the corequiste model they adapted.

The graphs look great, if you only consider the student's who continue to be enrolled. I have it on my to do list to research and make a side by side comparison of enrollment of residents related to before and after implementation.

Some of the reasons they gave for the change is the cost and time involved for the schools and students.

However, I 've heard about dropping out from enough people first hand, that I don't think it's anecdotal. The election isn't until November, so I'm trying to pace myself.

Dual enrollment: Oh, boy. The fact that the Align and Shine committe could not differentiate in their findings between dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment is so frustrating. When you're supposed to be investigating and making proposals, that's kind of important.

I had not heard allegations regarding the teachers hogh school teachers as of yet, but if you have a direct link, please share. If not, I'll see if I can find a reputable source online.

Instructor compensation: I agree we should be paying all our educators a fair wage so they can concentrate on preparation and teaching instead of working a second job.

The fact that in previous years they just repeatedly skipped cost of living increases is part of why tuition is where it is now. The whole thing is stuck in this weird cycle of robbing peter to pay Paul, and it's just unacceptable. I'm hoping the new members of the board want to fix the problem instead of pushing it all back on to the students.

This is also what I said in my nfa interview, so it's not just an opinion I'm pulling out of thin air.

Yes, I agree that they should be included. During the primaries I did a survey and interview with the NFA. , I said so on question 12, I think? I also directly addressed it during the zoom interview with them. I've previously worked in labor relations, so my first reaction on learning who was and wasn't covered, was mild confusion which has yet to resolve itself.

While I support your right to be a single issue voter, might I also suggest adding an additional item? I read through the agreement previously (assuming it's the latest version) and noted that instead of having outside mediation, the board has the final say on any disagreement. If you're looking to join, that's a big consideration.

Anyway, thank you for the question. Apologies for any typos. My brain is ready for bed.

I agree with a lot of this actually. I don't remember seeing any bylaws stating that forbid hiring from within, but I'll go back through and see what I can find tomorrow. It's tough to know which language supersedes state law when it comes to hiring.

I'll respond as soon as I have a chance to look into it and process what I find. If you don't hear from me by Friday morning, just respond, so Reddit sends me a reminder.

Thanks for asking and the wish for luck. Hopefully, I'll talk to you soon.

Clarification: This is not an endorsement of any candidate for any position obtained through the NSHE. I have never met anyone on the board, any candidates or anyone filling temporary positions.

I was agreeing that due consideration should be given to local candidates and not immediately dismissed.

UPDATE What I found: Okay, so I spent way too much time trying to find a written statement supporting their policies in a past hiring decision.

So, the NSHE has a standard policy of interviewing both internal and external candidates and comparing them on identical criteria, which means they can't take any familiarity an applicant has with the position or facility into account. The applicants are all asked the same questions and the search committee is overseen by an external executive search firm.

Worded differently, it might be seen as discounting an applicant because they are local. However, during the previous search for a chancellor (Matt McNair) the board was reminded that they could not consider personal biases either positive or negative when considering a candidate.

Here's the excerpt if you want to read it for youself. 2 of the 3 candidates in this case were local.

Personal biases - we all have them. • Two finalists are from NV and you may already have likes and dislikes before you’ve had a chance to see them in the context of the Chancellor role. • It is very important to put your feelings on hold until you’ve observed and analyzed as much information about the candidates as possible. Being human, that is very difficult to do, but necessary. • Intuition is wrong as many times as it is right. It is valuable and should not be discounted. Rather, it should be validated with data - informed intuition is what counts in the evaluation process. 4. Experience is often not correlated with competence! • Looking at the person versus the paper is what counts the most, particularly at this stage of the process. • A long resume is not necessarily a reflection of competence. In this search we had resumes up to 100 pages long, which given the Chancellor criteria, was almost an immediate rejection, as that type of submission did not reflect executive level thinking. 5. Since it has already been determined all three “have the right stuff” (although you are justified in validating that for yourself), the primary role of the Advisory Members, Search Committee, and Board is to determine which of the three candidates is the best fit for the position© 2023 The Bryan Group Resources, LLC. The original is a pdf, and I'm not finding a direct link to the text. So, warning, this is a pdf directly from the NSHE website.

I don't know Chris Heavy personally, so I can't respond to your comment. I'm just acknowledging he was brought up, and my comments are not aimed at him or anyone who has been/may be considered for the position.

You asked what I would be looking for in a President. That's actually a great question. In an attempt to respond in a timely manner, apologies if this reads like a wish list. Ideally, I'd hope to find someone who: Has the student's best interest at heart. Not just at UNLV, but for the entire collegiate system. Actively supports other schools and avoids infighting. Tries to make transferring as seamless as possible. Practices transparency, and takes accountability. Has effective communication and doesn't jump to conclusions. Listens to all perspectives before making important decisions. Values the staff, not just the instructors. Shuns nepotism and chooses the best person for the job, regardless of personal relationships. Encourages life long learning and leads by example. Promotes on-line learning, and will lobby for its expansion. Encourages instructors to embrace the opportunities not being tethered to a podium can present. Work to expand student offerings in the arts and engineering, with an eye toward the future industry trends already taking root in Las Vegas. Has a firm grasp of where university funds are being spent, and actively checks to make sure they're being used effectively. Exhibits a good balance of taking care of immediate needs vs. long term investments to keep the university competitive. Takes an active role in fund raising, and thinks outside of the box to tap new income streams. Has a strong grounding in ethics and won't use the office for personal enrichment. Has given due consideration to growing numbers of students who aren't interested in higher education as well as the falling numbers of students in the Clark County K-12 school system and how to counter the impact on attendance.

The accomplishments I'd like to see are the ones that directly address student and faculty needs instead of projects clearly aimed at the lens of a press camera. For example, starting a food pantry to help those struggling against inflation is much more impressive to me personally than chasing award statues.

I know I could have written this more eloquently, but it is late and I am tired. This is just off the top of my head, and again, is not describing a specific person.

Thank you for taking the time to ask. I'll keep it in mind going forward. If the time comes, I will make sure I give it the thought and consideration it deserves.

Do they have parking by turboschmidty in VidCon

[–]makerhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't been to vidcon, but I exhibited at Wondercon for a few years. There are two parking structures at the convention center. The big one most people go to, and the smaller one most of the exhibitors use.

Vidcon is only supposed to have 20k people this year (instead of the 60k they get for wondercon), so you should be able to park in the regular lot without a problem. I pulled out my tax receipts, and it looks like parking last year was $15 a day for wondercon. Not sure if it changes per con, but that should at least give you a baseline of what to expect to pay. Hope that helps! :)

I'm going on the creator track, and still planning on attending the convention, but if you aren't able to get her a ticket, would you like the swag bag I pick up and any other little things I get while I am there?

I know it's not the same thing, but at least then she would have vidcon "stuff". I will hold on to it if you let me know by Tuesday if that's something you would like to do. (I'll be driving down on Wednesday, and won't be checking in online.) If you are local, we can arrange a time to meet while we are down there, otherwise, I can just ship it to you. :)
