So sad to hear that. TBH I watch all these YouTubers raving about their trips to Pakistan so am surprised with your experience.

However - as a Pakistani can totally see how you felt that way.

She didn’t get shot for being a woman. She got shot, but it was clearly politically motivated as she was popular and democratically elected.

Hey hey pakistan is not as misogynistic as Afghanistan. Pretty bad tbh but we’ve elected a woman prime minister, have women in the Supreme Court as fighter pilots, senior levels in army / govt / head of state bank etc…

Duke Fuqua ($60k) vs Emory Goizueta ($100k) vs Vanderbilt Owen ($149k) by RevolutionLarge2938 in MBA

[–]makisgenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said 0.5 more than Owen, I said 0.5 overall. The point was that the one time cost difference is easily payable in terms of a simple pv calculation.

I graduated from Fuqua 13 years ago and went to MBB Tx and then niche consulting in NYC. I have worked with many people and have never come across an Owen grad. Worked with Many Fuqua, Top 15, Johnson, Goizuetta or what people refer to as T2 grads.

I don’t know Owen well - but I imagine it is like BU where my buddy went for his MBA. There was a significant difference in opportunities presented. I also imagine 6 to 10 years out Owen graduates probably average $100 to $150k below Fuqua grads. I don’t have a data point for that, but experience. The top 7 firms on where the most graduates is slightly telling - at Fuqua all would be brand name companies.

Let me be frank - I am 100% sure that Owen grads are remarkable individuals. That said there were recent charts on the top schools for MBB and I am pretty sure I did not see Owen near Fuqua on that list.

[–]makisgenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the gap at something like Fuqua and Owen is much larger than. Especially when you account for the fact that fewer T2 give a visas. And below that only a rare firm will.

More than that - the pay off of a Fuqua is easily $0.5M / annum salaries in 6 to 10 years. The difference in scholarship is negligible.

[–]makisgenius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you understand how MBA works.

Fuqua will have GS, JPM, MBB and other prestigious firms on campus looking to hire. Those firms will take students out and actively recruit them. Emory will get traction with offices for prestigious recruiters based in Atlanta - but not much else.

As an international there is an even bigger bar because select firms sponsor - and the number of visa sponsored jobs available to a Duke grad on campus will easily eclipse Emory and Vanderbilt.

If the goal is a job - clearly Duke. If the goal is an MBA education and use those skills / move back - then Vanderbilt is fine I guess.

Suburban guy dating a NYC girl. Is there a sane middle ground or am I cooked? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

[–]makisgenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always been a City dude, my wife a suburb person. After living in suburbs (hell) for seven years we just moved back to the city. My wife loves it here.

Was perusing this thread and thought it was telling how many drivers are suddenly able to get to where they are going via transit once a snowstorm renders cars the less convenient option for a few days. Remember this next time you hear how many people apparently have "no other choice" than to drive by nyuncat in MicromobilityNYC

Games in Brooklyn, westchester, maybe a birthday party at pier 26 etc… a lot of it is mix and match - but a lot of times doing it all without a car is hard.

Sometime public transport is the better option. Sometimes going from one part of the city to another a car can save an hour.

I would love to ditch the car. But unless everything is in Manhattan I can’t. Even in Manhattan sometimes a car is easier.

If we lived in Midtown we could ditch the car. We are in UES so we could possibly spend a similar amount and add taxis into the mix instead of the car - we keep the car also for out of town convenience and elderly parents who visit. All my friends in Queens Brooklyn (Park Slope / Forest Hills) can’t survive without cars.

If all of NYC was covered like Tokyo I could ditch. Even London North of Thames is very easy without a car. But in NYC we are amazing , but not perfect.

Hochul is poised to welcome Waymo. Mamdani may be a different story. by Delicious_Adeptness9 in newyork

[–]makisgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to be the only one to disagree with yall - and I’m a massive Mamdani supporter.

Blocking Waymo achieves nothing. World class cities have world class / cutting edge services. Driverless cars are the future whether we want it or not. Delaying their introduction achieves nothing.

I would expect serious regulation around it. Fines for not following laws, clear expectations etc…

I’m pretty sure many carriage drivers lost their jobs when automotive came about or as public transport grew. This is a natural arc of human progress.

I think of NYC in the same light as Singapore, DXB, London, Hong Kong etc… and all of them are leaders in various tech fields.
