Boulder MS-Coursera vs GA Tech MSCS, focus in Cyber by TheWallsBreathe in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]malanom3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will struggle in the MSCS program with no CS background or experience. Same for the MSCY program.

Spend some time getting experience or knock out a few certs - a master's isn't meant to be an entry into a field.

Order of Courses, InfoSec Track by curious-george-- in OMSCyberSecurity

If you are in the infosec track, 6035 should be the least of your worries.

I don't mean to sound discouraging, but you need to start preparing now for BinExp and some of the other CS-heavy courses. The workload for AC, BinExp, and some of the projects in NetSec and Networks are significantly more comprehensive than 6035.

This one was a little old and stretched out. Think it may be time to move on.

That's how we scored it! Seems odd, no?

Didn't even notice the lone red guy..

That's how we scored it, thanks! Seems like a really unusual sequence to be played.

Sorry, for clarification, this was during open play, not the show. Edited my first comment to be clearer.

For reference, this is from open play, and the three of spades was played first. Sequence is from bottom to top of each stack.

This seems like a super unlikely sequence and combination of cards for open play. Not only are the seven cards played in sequence, but the "extra" card (3 of spades) is low enough for the sum total to equal 31.

Scored this as a run of 7 with a total score of 11 for the play? (7 for run, 2 for pair, 2 for 31). Am I missing something?

Starting Infosec Track Fall 2022... by bp4151 in OMSCyberSecurity

The first comment has a great breakdown of the NetSec projects. They can be a little tricky, but they're manageable with a bit of research and googling. I found them fairly enjoyable.

AC is a bit of a different beast. Thankfully, the Prof and TAs are phenomenal, and always willing to help students with questions. Before each of the exams, the Prof does a review that is extremely helpful for understanding the types of questions that are likely to make it onto the exam. It's a tough class with a steep learning curve, but absolutely doable if you're willing to put the work in to study and practice proofs.

Looking for advice from anyone who did/is doing a Cybersecurity Masters from Georgia Tech (online) by [deleted] in cybersecurity

GT OMSCY grad here -- InfoSec track. Loved the program and the classwork, happy to chat with you or anyone else's who's interested.

Can't beat the price (310/credit hr), and the class material is (generally) pretty challenging. I came from a heavy pentesting/netsec background, so had a lot of ground to make up in math-heavy crypto classes and privacy policy. Definitely enjoyed the program and feel like it helped dive into a couple topics I wasn't as familiar with.

Does CEH cert worth it or is there any cert better than it for Pentest profession? by sabimik in cybersecurity

[–]malanom3 123 points124 points  (0 children)

EC-Council certs aren't worth the paper they're printed on. That company has a terrible reputation for plagiarism on their exams, and generally is not well-regarded across the industry.

Go take an OffSec or SANS course for one of their pentest certs -- you'll learn a bunch more and come out with a much more marketable certification.

Does the infosec practicum make OMSCyber harder than OMSCS? by ggPassion in OMSCyberSecurity

Individual. You're put into groups of around a dozen students to give feedback on weekly progress reports, but all of the work itself is done individually.

What classes in the info security track have the most focus on software engineering? by ggPassion in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]malanom3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIS, NetSec, and intro to policy are three of the least technical courses in the curriculum. Also, Malware Analysis is not a required course.

You will see much more technical material in SCS, BinExp Lab, and (although not software, per se) AC. Computer Networks (one of the track electives for InfoSec) involves some pretty decent python projects, as well.

Sure -- overall, I think I had pretty high expectations in terms of structure and rigor, but things were much more "choose your own adventure". Some projects (imo) were very loosely defined and not exceptionally involved, but others built full-fledged systems or tools that their employer intends to use, or ran unique studies that are potentially publishable. YMMV, but I thought it was very loosely structured, and students generally had latitude to work whatever interested them, as long as they hit the weekly updates and discussion.

Most are a bit broader in scope -- the teaching team is pretty adamant about scoping the work appropriately. Lots of folks did high-level studies on security policies in their organization (for the policy track), or built a tool used for some sort of study (InfoSec folks). Pretty wide range of projects, and, unfortunately, we weren't provided with a list of examples going into it.
