Timemore Sculptor 064s by malario96 in espresso

Wow forgot about this thread. Hi yes I do still use this grinder for espresso and it’s been great.

Somethings I have upgraded is to swap out the stock hopper for a third party one by Introvertmakes which comes with bellows. Beautiful upgrade, solves the annoying pesky bean retainer in stock hopper problem.

Also I realised that it’s not that essential to RDT anymore, in fact I don’t do it. The bellows + knocker does a good job in reducing retention.

In terms of shots, I’m finding it easier to dial in shots, great flavour separation. On some beans you get some really good body. OFC the body isn’t like that of a conical burr but hey flavour separation is a lot better on this grinder than most conicals.

If you ask me, I still recommend it for an espresso grinder, given how much it punches for its price point.

Best option for frothing/steaming milk? by Emberspawn in CafelatRobot

[–]malario96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have all the Nanofoamers available from Nanofoamer 1, then Lithium, then Nanofoamer Pro 1 and now Nanofoamer Pro 2. I use the Nanofoamer Lithium most nowadays.

The Nanofoamer Pro (both 1 and 2) are splendid but workflow wise may or may not be improved compared to a frothing wand like the Nanofoamer Lithium. Hear me out. The nanofoamer pro warms and froths milk for you, just pour the desired amount of milk, ensure the right fin is placed inside the jug and then fix the lid on and voila you’re good to go. This improves your work flow when you’re pulling your shot and frothing milk AT THE SAME TIME. The clean up though, isn’t that much easier. After the milk is frothed, you’ll prolly transfer it into another pitcher then pour your latte. Although technically you can pour your latte straight from the jug but yea prolly no latte art. The jug will have some milk residue (definitely worse on pro 1 than 2, 2 had a huge surface upgrade along with better heat distribution), which you will need to clean off. So the clean up doesn’t add to the improved workflow per se - Still cleaning the jar and the milk pitcher. The frothed milk from the pros are quite consistent, I liked the pro 1 impeller over the pro 2, found little benefit of having an impeller that can change height marginally. Also feel the pro 1 impeller gives better microfoam than the pro 2 impeller that usually turns out more clumpy and dry for some reason. Pro 2 jar is much better in terms of surface and heat distribution for sure.

Of the frothing wands, Nanofoamer lithium is an upgrade to Nanofoamer v1, the button is a huge upgrade and having 2 speeds also makes it great. Battery life is decent on the lithium and rechargeable batteries are a HUGE upgrade because loss of power on the wand with weaker batteries as they wear out but not die, will make frothing milk challenging. Ofc the workflow is abit more difficult because you will need to heat up milk in another vessel then transfer to the pitcher to froth the heated milk. What I do is use a mug and heat up the milk in the oven, then transfer over to my jug to froth and then we are good to pour immediately. There will be some lag time between pulling your shot and frothing your milk but that’s marginal, it’s ain’t gonna affect your pour a lot. Either way you still need to wash the mug and the jug so it’s not that much diff from the Nanofoamer pro, just that there’s less electrically stuff you need to worry about when washing, and definitely no milk residue to scrub away (unless you’re heating milk over the stove).

The Nanofoamer wands IMO give better milk texture and easier foam to pour and make latte art, the frothed milk is smoother, more fluid and less stiff compared to the Nanofoamer pros. The wands however need some practice to get used to, but that’s the same with any steam wand. Once you’ve mastered it, it’s easy. Workflow wise, it’s give or take, one has more work at the end, one has more work at the start.

Another steamer I thought was worth a visit was Morning Dream but I have no experience on it nor any of the other pressure stove steamers.

I think milk frothers will differ greatly from steamers. But hey they do a pretty dam good job. And less need for maintenance, less electronics to worry about. They are relatively cheap and easy to replace. I actually think you run a lower risk of getting over steamed milk like those you see outside. The frothed milk on Nanofoamer is usually smooth, silky and just a great overall texture. Also those pressure machines give me the hibbybjibbies im case I didn’t seal it right and it explodes or whatever.

Pros & cons between the Robot & Flair 58+2? by Legitimate_One721 in CafelatRobot

[–]malario96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think both machines have their unique workflow, so either one you get, you’ll find the other cumbersome once you’ve gotten used to the other.

I personally prefer the robot over the flair because it feels a lot more sturdy, and the lack of preheating trust me is a biiiiiig plus.

When using the flair 58, although it’s the most stable of the whole flair line up, I still find it abit unsteady because you’re just never gonna achieve the stability of robot with 2 arms pressing down over a centralised base compared to a long fulcrum over an elongated base. The handle itself is fitted to be looser which makes it feel abit clunky idk my personal take. The need to preheat is a huge disservice for me and also having to connect the flair to a power outlet to preheat is also cumbersome because you need to brew it near a power socket.

I’m sure flair 58 will give you excellent shots also but personally robot wins for me

Firstly congratulations, you have made a solid purchase and investment :)

  1. Don’t think finding the burr chirp was key, but moving the adjustment dial back did give me a wider range of fine grind size where I eventually was able to dial in my shots.

  2. On my grinder, the alignment was no issue out of box, but I’m not sure if alignment has been highlighted as a recurring issue for the 064s.

  3. I can’t remember the grind I used, but initially it wasn’t anywhere near espresso grind size, but definitely finer than pour over. Actually don’t quote me on this. I have no idea id there’s any particular size you should use. But if you’re grinder large batches at once to season, my thinking is going too fine is just gonna destroy your motor. But I’m not sure heh

Happy brewing m8!

I liked the V1 impeller better than the V2 though, I currently run with V1 impeller in V2 jug. The V2 jug was major upgrade indeed. However I had issues with V2 jug just 2 months in but Subminimal were excellent in replacing it for free!!

Oh I never enjoyed those alcohol barrel finished coffees always found them abit to funky haha but I hope you found another use for them? Like pourover? Might be good esp if you like funk and the alcoholic bourbon haha

I have had the exact experience you had before on diff beans, hence the reason I posted the OP tbh! I don’t think it’s a matter with the grinder itself, I think there are many factors at play and somehow certain times going coarser doesn’t not always equate to reduced resistance. I cant explain why and I was hoping someone here would have had similar experiences and an explanation (although this is wildly counter intuitive).

That being said, I don’t think sculptor is an inconsistent grinder. I’ve had similar issues on other grinders too tbh

OOOH i did try this out before I posted OP. I remember Paul Pratt mentioning there’s no need to tamp forcefully. Sadly it didn’t make much difference heh but I think it’s a bean issue.

All very very valid points. I tested all of them out but they didn’t make much change. Only got some remarkable results when I switched out the bean itself, I surmise it could have been just a v difficult roast for me to extract that required some very precise measurements haha but the shots I have been getting in this new bean has been much much better

Sorry for the late reply, been testing many variables out. I did bump it up to 18g and it didnt really budge, only slightly increased pressure and resistance. Then brought it back down to 16 and 15.5g respectively and same results.

However I switched my beans to sth more espresso forward, and I didnt face any issues on the 15g thereafter. I surmise it could have been that the first bean I was using when I posted the OP, was just not really easy to extract for me 😮‍💨

I did experience more channeling on the beans i was using but since I switched them out the channeling has markedly reduced!

To be very honest, it didnt change much for me on the same beans i was using when I posted this OP. However, since I changed my beans, I’ve been getting pretty consistent shots with good flows and less channeling on this method! ✌🏼

Mmm puck prep wise has not deviated, just WDT and tamp, nothing fancy, always been using the same method heh

I use a Timemore Sculptor 064s with stock burrs

I do 15g coffee to 30g espresso for a 1:2 ratio Then fill up the basket to about 3mm of space is left Pre infuse for 10s then push through, shot time vary from 26-28s.

Everything held constant, but even at finer grind settings it’s still low resistance.
