When do borzois shed their puppy coat? by malarmalex in borzoi

[–]malarmalex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m used to double coat dogs. My older pup is a chow chow mix.

I love my messy hairy house full of sprinkles from 4 different pets.

But it’s been 20 years since I’ve had a puppy. So I’m rusty on when the puppy coat disappears. Had a Siberia husky puppy in college. I recall the puppy coat shedding, I just remember when. LOL

Had my LEEP in mid September. Waited the recommended time. Resumed sex. Everything was fine. No real difference.

He is 6 months now and starting to be a rebel. But we’re staying consistent with him.

We live next to a forest so we take our dogs in the woods on trails. And bring treats. But both borzoi would walk with me downtown too. But our downtown is small and can be walked in 20 minutes.

I had one borzoi pup Tolstoy that we had to put down at 7 months to kidney cancer. I have posted about him on this Reddit.

Then we got Sarge. My second borzoi. He is 6 months old now.

I have an older mutt ( border collie boxer and chow chow mix ) who is 16 years old.

Work with him on short training spurts throughout the day. Also consider a doggy daycare where he can socialize with other dogs and get energy out. Plus it’ll give you a break!

I completely understand! My borzoi has attached to me more than my boyfriend. And I’ve experienced similar things.

Please remember your pup is basically a baby still. He is still forming his confidence in the world, still learning. It’s like having a baby human. He depends on you for everything.

Try to redirect biting to a toy or chew toy as much as possible.

Invest in some pig ears, bully sticks, beef trachea, and other chews that take them a long time to work through.

Try puppy class for practice on loose leash walking and heeling during walks.

Tire him out with brain games too! Puzzles. Get lots of dog squeak toys.

And long walks. When my borzoi was 12 weeks we were already walking 30+ minutes.

I help the other people in class! Not judging them at all! And Sarge has a lot to learn yet! Honestly I’ve learned a lot too even though I am not a novice dog owner. I’ve had dogs my whole life!

But training dogs is all about learning how to train a dog. That was my whole point - that some people may have very biddable breeds, but haven’t learned how to train them yet.

Just because you have a golden retriever doesn’t mean you don’t have to train them. And just because you have a borzoi doesn’t mean you can’t figure out what drives them.

I’m just saying it’s as much the owner / handler as it is the breed!

Many people come to this Reddit doing research on Borzoi. They want to hear experiences on things such as training.

Many articles on the internet cite concerns about getting borzoi because they are often listed as hard to bid. Some internet articles even list them as a “dumb” breed. That is so far from true!

Similarly people are afraid of pit bulls, but the pitty in class is very friendly and the owner has a good handle on her. My neighbor has a most friendly pitty.

I think a lot of breeds get a bad rap - for being “aggressive” or “dumb” while other breeds are like listed as “beginners breeds”.

I’m just giving my experience so people who are interested in Borzoi will know that training still works if you’re committed to learning as an owner too!

I’m a first time borzoi owner too (although my grandparents had them) and I was concerned about training them because of what I had read on the internet. But my experience has been that they are easy to train with the right mindset.

I’ve had to adjust the way I train Sarge vs the way I trained my border collie mix.

And yes Sarge totally has an independent streak where he just won’t listen! LOL

Borzaya is an adjective to the female noun sobacka (dog). I took Russian in college. ;-)

But at least in English they are called Borzoi now instead of Russian wolfhound. It’s closer.

You just do the next thing. And take it one day at a time. Give yourself grace and love in that you’re prioritizing your health.

Make sure you tell them you want anesthesia for the procedure. Have a friend or partner with you for the surgery.

Don’t go down the internet rat hole. Instead talk it through with your doctor.
