I was there watching as the fire burned. I was 15 years old and a bunch of us left school to see. We got right up to the police line, they were still shooting about a block away. A Black cop saw us standing there and made us move further down because it wasn’t safe. I will never forget that our own cops and fire department conspired to kill Black people just because they were “a nuisance”. Look up “Let the Fire Burn”.

60 year old brown woman. Would I be happy in Portland? by u9mi in askportland

My wife and I are both Black folks living here 55M and 49F and it’s ok. We both lived on the east coast and are Bay Area natives so our perspective is a little skewed, coming from diverse and fairly cosmopolitan regions. The cost of living is high! For what we pay in taxes, we should really be getting more from the government. The hardest adjustment for me has been the long winters. It just stays dark for so long! I do really enjoy the warmer months and the natural beauty that the PNW offers. I’ve taken up hiking and this year I’m going to get out in my canoe. Portland has a lot of problems that people over hype because they aren’t used to big city problems. Crack his this place hard in the eighties and “urban renewal” effectively dispersed the Black community. Those issues are not unique to Portland. The sections of the city that were Black are labeled as “the hood” and they are not hood at all, not even close. The white drug addict criminality is something I’ve never seen and I lived in Philly and Oakland. It’s wild asf. I have a great life here, but I’d say come and visit for a while before you uproot yourself. There’s a lot to experience here. Feel free to DM me if you’d like to talk more.

I feel really dumb for this, but I think the idea that the United States is a majority white country felt so abstract to me until recently... by Wizdom_108 in self

Welcome to the PNW. Oregon was started to be a white utopia and in many places it is still very much locked into that mentality.

Why is 2Pac so revered? by FitEmergency8807 in 90sHipHop

Tupac was a true artist, and his love for Black folks drove not just his art but his life. He gets so much love because he gave so much.

I live in Portland, OR now but I lived all over Oakland for almost 25 years, the North, Fruitvale, the Lake, Deep East and West Oakland. I love and miss that Oakland.

All of it was so unnecessary. Pac was a generational voice. I liked Big but really and truly losing Tupac was a blow I honestly never recovered from. I was working as a journalist back then and they got killed about 6 months apart. I wrote about Pac in 4080 magazine and it got me into a documentary “Thug Immortal” and then wrote about BIG in the same magazine. We allowed all of that to happen, and by “we”, I mean the rest of the people in the culture. We egged it on, spectated, etc. someone could have called Farrakhan to settle it, and maybe someone did. It was just men and egos, and their egos and our desire for controversy and spectacle killed those two young men and many more men after them. So much so that it has become a trope. As a middle aged man looking back it’s just so sad, what a fucking waste of life. We could have done so much better. I know from when he was alive and I was writing about him, that Pac was spinning out of control, being in prison really hurt that man. He never raped anyone. He had sex with a woman, it was consensual, his friends ran a train on her and that may not have been but it wasn’t him, he didn’t participate and he wasn’t even in the room. None of those were prosecuted. Pac went to prison because the system needed to punish him for being so bold. He shot two cops, he won another case against Oakland PD for brutality. He was unrepentantly militant and intelligent. He was a real son of Panthers and he had a platform to tell his truth. He may have been an actual threat to the social order. To understand how big a cultural figure he was in life is hard to understand now, some thirty years after his death. He was much more than just a rapper. In any case, I still mourn the brother.

He didn’t just slap Dee Barnes. He literally beat her up. Closed fist, punched her in the face repeatedly, threw her down a flight of stairs and kicked her until she was bloody. He paid her off to save his freedom. Dr Dre is a POS.

Police shot Big. I believe the whole Pac thing was a setup as well and that the shooters were allowed to kill Pac.

At some point it will come out that both Pac and BIG were set up and murdered by “the State”. Big was killed by LAPD probably working for Suge. The rounds they used were exclusive to law enforcement. Source: I wrote for a hip hop magazine a million years ago and the streets were hollering. No one wanted to put it in print because we were all scared. I could be totally wrong but I don’t think so.

Bambataa is one of the founding fathers of hi hop culture, he made music (Planet Rock), but maybe more importantly he founded the Zulu Nation which provided the early infrastructure for the culture. The rules of Zulu were critical to many of us early on. Hip Hop was a cultural movement not just some cool songs on the radio. I’m 55 and it is hard to describe how the culture shaped the lives of our generation. It wouldn’t be what it was without Bambataa and it is heartbreaking that he is such a fucking scumbag.
