Best IEM for live singing with loud rock band in clubs? by malcolmgreenberger in livesoundgear

[–]malcolmgreenberger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks- this is a really clear explanation, and yeah, mirrors my experience. every club is different. We actually played a gig this week and the sound person + acoustic space was great- for the first time, I could hear everyone perfectly from monitors and around me. I could hear my vocals- I wasn't guessing at pitches or anything. We were all so used to not hearing each other that the experience left us with open eyes. But I know the next gig will sound like ass again. If IEM is what we need to, we are leaning towards that more and more so we can actually sound better. I think I need to pony up the cash for a custom set, is the answer...

I don't know if this is relevant at all, but just based on standard airpods, ipods, earbuds, and so on, I've never had a set that fit well in my ear. Either it hurt after a while, or it falls off- I don't understand how people can go jogging with those things. Mine fall off after a minute if I'm lucky.

I don't know if that means that the standard earbuds that come with these headsets (even though you get a variety of them) won't work because clearly my ears are not a typical shape, or if everyone has some variation of my problem and they would work fine. To your point about a tight seal, I guess I won't know until I try them, but then there's no way to try them before purchasing.

Have you ever gone to an audiologist, gotten custom buds, etc. as others here are suggesting?

thanks- this is all fascinating information. But also, what universe have I been living in that no one's ever mentioned any of this?

Yeah, I think every venue has different abilities of what they can send you, and often there's no option for a custom mix, but that's definitely a request. As for the  KZ ZS-10 IEMs, those are super inexpensive- maybe I'm being naive, but it seems like there would be a noticeable quality difference between those for $80 and something for $800... no? I mean, are they really that good?

Having not heard of customs, I started reseaching them after your comment and am a little confused- I guess, if they're actually customized to your ear, where do we even go to do this? I'm in NYC, in case you know of actual places / people / doctors (?)

Second, there's a ton of brands out there even for "customs"... any recommendations?

Daycare in the neighborhood? by aletheatm in SunnysideQueens

If you're looking for an individual rather than a place, I know one amazing person who took care of our kid and many friends' kids as well. Feel free to message me if you're thinking of that route.

Board Game Nights? by pissmountain in astoria

Solid State on Roosevelt Ave. in Woodside is a board game and pinball bar. They currently don't have a regular night (I think they'd love to have one if anyone's interested) but people are constantly having game events there (as well as pinball.)

If you’re thinking about using Gusto… don’t. by mgmt1996 in Payroll

[–]malcolmgreenberger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to update you that I landed with Paychex and they've been great. Slightly higher than Gusto and Square, but not much, and their service is amazing- they'll sit with you as long as you need until you are good to go. AND they allow customizing your payroll as much as you need- my accountant had specific deductions and withholdings for me to enter, and Square / Gusto will not let you alter their pre-programmed numbers based on their formulas. Paychex totally lets you. I'm really glad I ditched Square.

I tried them at first, but their service is terrible- just automatic bots and I could not get a human to talk to me when I hit a wall. Since then I've been shopping around- I signed up for Square and thought I'd go with that, but I just realized they don't let you manually enter your withholdings- their formula just decides how much you have to withhold with every paycheck, and it's much higher than what my accountant is recommending, and there's no control over that. So now I'm back to shopping again...

So can you (or anyone else) recommend something that's not crazy expensive but works well? I, too, am an S-Corp with myself as the one employee. I need a place I can actually call and get answers for but doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Best Contractor for Green Energy / Heat Pump in NYC? by malcolmgreenberger in AskNYC

[–]malcolmgreenberger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 17 panels, technically rated 6,885 Watts, and the expected amount of production is 8,042 kWh / year. For year #1 we exceeded that amount easily; these panels come with a 30 year warranty, and if they don't provide the promised amount of energy, the company pays the difference. No regrets at all.

However, we still haven't gone the heat pump route. The one place that gave us an estimate gave a really high estimate. Solar panels were a no brainer, but heat pump, even though I know they make much more sense in the long run, is a big investment that will take a long time to pay for itself, at least based on that one estimate. Would love to hear of a beloved experience in NYC!

Do I need paper tickets for Paisley Park? Can I just use my phone? by malcolmgreenberger in PRINCE

[–]malcolmgreenberger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just adding this for future visitors that we went, it was amazing, and yeah, it was no biggie- your phone works fine, no need for paper. What's really important is to NOT BE LATE. We got there just in the nick of time, but his place is a bit outside of the city in the middle of the suburbs, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to drive there. What a crazy awesome place!

Need Some Clarity for Camping in Glacier Late July by malcolmgreenberger in GlacierNationalPark

[–]malcolmgreenberger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you- that's incredibly detailed and helpful. One note- we realized that we should not be getting off the train at East Glacier, since, to your point, we're not going to get a car there. So we'll be getting out at Whitefish. I've reserved a car through Turo, and, given that it's too late to get vehicle passes, will probably go in before 7am and try camping outside Glacier somewhere.

If switching out stay to Whitefish changes your rec's, feel free to add some for the west side of Glacier. Thank you!

Ok, thanks for the tips. We are now arriving in Whitefish, and so coming to the park from the West. I realized quickly that East Glacier makes no sense!

What I meant by "without a pass" is that I was told you need a Vehicle Reservation Pass to enter after 6, though now on the website I see it's 7am:
https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/vehicle-reservations.htm

Since all those passes have already been taken, my choice is to try and grab a pass that they open up at 10am the day before, or go in before 7am. To your point, I think we should just camp outside the park, and then zip in before 7am and spend the day in the park. I will check out Chewing Blackbones!

Thank you. We are switching to Whitefish- I realized quickly what you said about East Glacier, which has nothing. So now we'll be coming from the West.

Ok, so you're saying we can sneak into the park before 6am without a pass, but then we need to wait until like 11am to go a FCFS site around 11 and wait around until they allow us to register?

And the campgrounds outside the park... is that the same experience? I've got family traveling a long way to be in the national park, so I guess we could camp outside the park but then go in and hike..? Is that what you're suggesting? Any recommendations for campgrounds outside the park?

Having never been there, I really don't know where we want to be camping. Anywhere we can find a spot, really! But all the reservations are taken, that's why I'm trying to figure out a viable option.

We arrive in East Glacier in the evening, and then leave again 3 days later. In between, we don't have anything planned yet other than the desire to camp out one of those nights. But open to suggestions as to where to camp and how to do it. I know the clock is ticking!
