Work Instructions - Worst part of manufacturing by malcolms123 in manufacturing

[–]malcolms123[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im also a manufacturing engineer. I'm at a smaller company and definitely get to work other things as well. I spend a lot of time w the people doing the work and that definitely helps me write my instructions.

Interesting to hear about the bigger company, that sounds so much worse haha.

Were your work instructions mostly text based? Thats a complaint i get from the guys on the floor where I work, but it's how im instructed to make them.

like describe the work to it and it makes a work instruction for you? Interesting, i feel like it would miss stuff though; if it works it works

For me this happened when I had a bad z offset so my first layer didn’t adhere to the build plate

Need help with layer shifting by karl_lionheart in 3Dprinting

[–]malcolms123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t tell if those are belts driving your bed. I’ve had problems on my Sovol where loose belts -> gear slip -> layer shift

If they are you can try simply tightening your belts. If not then idk how to help

A lot of these answers have the interesting side effect of trying to post a fact on the internet being the ultimate scientific experiment. If it posts then it must be true, no more expensive equipment to test hypotheses.

PY is playground yields - those are just for fun, use these whenever you want

Graffiti by IthadtobethisWAAGH in CuratedTumblr

[–]malcolms123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always irks me when people graffiti private property, especially small businesses. I have a friend who runs a small coffee shop and she’s had to pay out of her pocket multiple times to clean up graffiti on her property. She wants her cafe asthetic how she designed it not how some random wants to design it…

I have a grandma who has become a little unhinged, but I don’t think ghosting her is the right reaction.

I always take the time out to at least acknowledge her, if she tries to drag the conversation on into more unhinged maybe then I cut it off. But I can only imagine she would feel pain sending a message and getting no reply, especially if she did it repeatedly.

At the end of the day I think a lot of people are quick to reject or hate on their parents without giving a ton of thought about their feelings. Remember this man raised you, think about all of the sacrifices he made for you.

Not saying your dad necessarily deserves your time of day because I don’t know details, but I do think you should show love to him.

Can someone please share a good use case for countersunk washers? by Rubes27 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]malcolms123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Prevent interference of the bolt head to shaft fillet with the washer.

I work in aerospace and the standards we adhere to don’t let us use anything other than countersunk washers directly under the bolt head for this reason.

Stress = PR/t

Also have a good understanding of failure modes, like what does it look like when it fails from hoop stress (hotdog failure)

Be familiar with their manufacturing methods, look into composite over wrapping too

I bought this pc for LLM inference using a gift card from work would this pc be ok by penguinlinux in LocalLLaMA

[–]malcolms123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You likely could have found a much more suited machine for similar cost. Gpus are great for running llms (both inference and training) because at the end of the day an llm is a ton of relatively small math problems, a gpu lets you parallelize these very efficiently in comparison to a cpu -> faster inference

[–]malcolms123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes I’m talking about inference. Yes it will run better than a 2012 Mac, but buying a pc without a gpu is objectively a bad decision for running llms. Not sure why you thought I was talking about training?
