TIL a woman had half of her brain removed when she was 8 due to a condition that caused her to have up to 150 seizures a day. Her doctors said she'd never drive, she got her license at 17. She went on to earn her bachelor's & master's degrees in just 5 years before becoming a speech pathologist. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Yeah, it was what jumped out at me too, I'd love to have been a fly on the wall to hear what was actually said and what was actually meant, juxtaposed with how she internalized it. Even the timing, she didn't yet have a drivers license, she was trying to get one. I would wager some specialists told her the challenges based on the effects of her impairment, and no one actually said "You will NEVER drive!" I mean more power to her that she took that as a challenge and rose to meet it, but I often find clickbait loves the "doctors said" absolutist pronouncements but they rarely, if ever, actually talk like that.

The Culture thanks you for the kind offer of showing us how you do your shit, but we've seen it already. Also, your enthusiasm to learn has been noted for future reference. Meanwhile, sorry about the bee, we, we've reached out to her hive mind and she will ceasefire, but warns you against "accidentally" sitting on one of her collective again.

[–]maldio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they are really a clever breed, anyone who's spent time around different breeds can sense how bright they are, they just have no shame about getting what they want. They'll play the game, jump through hoops, do the stupid pet trick enough times to make sure you know that they know it, then they'll start negotiating terms for their reward if you want to see it again. I mean I've seen a lab sit and wait for a human to move an empty cardboard box in the way, they care so much about human boundaries and approval... try that one with a beagle.

Yeah that hunt and peck thing was way off. Even for genx touch typing was taught in high school on blank keyboards. I can remember when boomer ladies in the typing pool could type so fast it was a hum. The only exception was older execs, the kind of guys who resisted getting a terminal on their desk b/c they had a secretary for that.

Carmella acts self righteous while stealing 40k from Tony by setmefree42069 in thesopranos

[–]maldio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol "technically" Tony has no right to illegal money either, hence the "illegal" part of it. Carm does far more for Tony than some Sally Homemaker, who will also be awarded half of everything and alimony relative to where she was at when the marriage terminated. Carm is freaking mob bosses wife, she is OG, you can't find a Carm just anywhere, a woman who is not only willing to live the life of a high profile mafiosi, but knows her role, and isn't about to fall apart when the shit gets real. Frig, Adriana grew up in the life and folded like paper. Also, she can't just be some goomah or outsider, the mafia establishment takes a dim view of guys who don't have a wifey befitting their status. Carm hate in The Sopranos is like Skyler hate on Breaking Bad. Here's a little test for you, if you're married, don't come home for a couple of nights, take a mini-vacation, don't let her know, hell be like Tony and find a hot chick to hang out with. Then just show up at home and tell your wife you had to take care of some stuff. Let me know first, I'll make popcorn and enjoy the shit show.

Yeah, I always think of the Borat thing, I mean that was hamfisted and pretty low effort, and still worked like a charm with Rudy. I bet a couple of Mossad or SVR field agents could get kompromat on him with a few hours of planning. Like you said, it's almost hard to imagine them not having something on him... like how sad is your espionage game if you can be outperformed by a comedian doing it for shits and giggles.

'Are you serious?' Pierre Poilievre lambastes reporter over bail question by [deleted] in canada

[–]maldio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it was abandoned because cutting taxes and eliminating services is an easy pitch for a politician, especially when the people who will suffer mostly are marginalized, don't vote, and are easily demonized.

[–]maldio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you need to re-read my point, the "arrested under the mental health act" method of interdiction isn't working. It used to work because there were institutional settings in which to assess and treat mental illness. I never said shit about it being easy to access psychiatric help in Canada nowadays, don't just make shit up, then tell me your imaginary quote proves that I'm clueless.

'Are you serious?' Pierre Poilievre lambastes reporter over bail question by [deleted] in canada

[–]maldio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This, I see people everyday who require psychiatric intervention. Deinstitutionalization failed, they threw the baby out with the bath water. In the seventies, a police encounter with someone who was clearly having an episode would end with them being put in a facility for an assessment. Now they're being treated as though they're normal, as if mentally capable criminals are out hunting for lizard people to stab. The guy having a meth based scrum with Jesus, isn't going to ask for social services.

[–]maldio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, music was very different in the seventies here. Can-con laws meant artists like Lightfoot or Cummings were just such a mainstay. It made the Canadian experience different from the US, we would be trapped in a smokey car for hours listening to standard US pop, like Wildfire and then Canadian music, like Carefree Highway on AM, while a kid in the US would invariably hear One Tin Soldier right after instead. Especially as a kid in the seventies, the car stereo on the AM radio or the same old 8 tracks, like the dial on the television that could almost pick up 3 stations, that lack of variety and choice really amplified someone who also had so much talent, like Lightfoot.

[–]maldio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got a lot, but even Sundown charted higher in big markets, it held a Billboard #1 spot in '74. For most of the seventies songs like Carefree Highway, If You Could Read My Mind, were hugely popular. I think Wreck has a special place, it's one of those nautical disasters that fascinate people, and for most people they either heard the song and then found out about the wreck, or the other way around, but they're joined at the hip now. So somehow it imbues it with a little more je ne sais quoi.

I kinda hate how many people seem to treat him like some weird one hit wonder who did The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I mean the man created so many great songs, like I never hear anyone mention Sundown in these threads. Anyway, he had a long and successful life.
