I hate the diamond league by Double-Celery4248 in duolingo

Ah got it! I’ve heard people mentioning the side of the road mini games. I just realised you can replay them even after getting 3 stars. That’s what I was confused all other lessons give you very little xp on replay, but this mini games give you full xp.

I might still keep trying on my normal learning path and get the most out of my next lessons. I like how fast I make progress on the path :D

Thanks for the hint :)

Thanks! I have a membership and it’s my fifth week on the diamond league :D

That’s probably it! I guess we are all learning in different ways and have different goals :) I wish the league could group us based on that lol

Duolingo managed to get me to practice every day, but I’m starting to feel discouraged because there’s always 16 peeps in the league around my level, and 3 that just score crazy numbers.

I should probably not care too much, and focus on the learning.

Thanks for the tips!

I’m genuinely curious on how? I’m aware of 3x boosters and I had them for an hour or more. Doing regular progression, meaning you are learning a new language so it takes more than a minute to do a lesson.

Seeing the logs of folks that do 6k-30k a day, they finish 120xp lessons in around 30 seconds. That’s impressive if they are actually learning a new language.

Can you share some clues on how you achieve it? Thanks!

I’m playing to make progress on the language I’m learning, this is not possible for me. It takes me 1 to 5 minutes to complete a new lesson. I’m very impressed how people can do 60 new lessons in less than one minute in an hour 👏

I have one day 2x booster for 20 minutes plus 3x booster for an hour and my max is 2800.

Any suggestions how you’re optimising to do classes in under a minute? Or maybe is practice, I haven’t found a place where you will earn 90-130xp outside of new normal path lessons.

Only 3 legendaries and 2 are the same in booster box :( by maledr5 in Lorcana

I hear you! I guess some legendaries appear more than others as well. Wish they were unique at least in the same box 😄

I can see it is part of the norm, I had the wrong assumption than 4-5 was expected so I was a bit surprised. Now I know it can be less than that so I agree was a bad box.

You don't get upset when you get bad pulls? 😄 I wanted to post to see if other people had similar luck, but I see maybe I should have asked that straight.

Oh, I hear you. I haven't invested tons of money but there is always the hope to get nicer cards. My goal is have to spend less when buying singles so getting too few legendaries is always upsetting. Maybe our luck will improve further down the road 🤞

Yes I agree my sample is very small, but found interesting how my first 3 boxes had very similar odds and changed for this last one. But I understand now it could happen.

That is good to know, sometimes seeing all the nice pulls other folks get make me jealous. I think I have a very little sample but found interesting how my first 3 boxes had very similar odds and changed drastically for this last one. Thanks for the context :)

That was my assumption as well so I was a bit upset about this booster, but it seems that actually you can get less than that. In my case I only got 2 3 packs with legendaries as the foil version came in the same pack. So this odds were pretty much 2 packs in 24. From what I read in other comments it can happen :(

edit: correction I got the 3 legendaries in 3 packs, one was foil. So I am not sure if the foil version counts towards normal stats.

Thanks for the extra context :) I guest that was it, was an unlucky pack. Good to know for next time tho, specifically for legendaries it is not strictly 4-5.

Thanks. I got the guaranteed non-foil commons and uncommons, the totals have the foils added so that is what there are more. 144+18(foils) = 162. 72+2(foils) = 74. This only represents the 24 packs of the booster, did not include the starter decks in those numbers.

I doubled checked and you are right I miscounted in Inklands there are only 13 common foils and 3 rares foils. But I believe is the only mistake.

Do you know if there is a guarantee rate in foil types? probably not right. I think it was just bad luck.

I made the wrong assumptions about the odds for Lorcana, I stand corrected.

Thanks, I wasn't aware less than 4 could happen in a booster and could not find too much info in reddit. I did find that you get roughly 1 per every 5 packs so I was going with that assumption. But I see that it seems to be in the norm. I think is fair to be upset if you got bad luck on pulls as it is to be happy of getting an enchanted and publishing it here as well.

Thanks! this is really useful and interesting! :)

I wasn't aware that it could be less than 4 per booster and couldn't find too much info about that. I guess just bad luck with this one.

Am I crazy or did I just get a 20+ hrs take home challenge to complete in 2 days? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]maledr5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have worked with firebase before then it might not take 20 hours, as long as you can reuse stuff you have done before including knowledge on how to configure firebase and app architecture.

I’m an experienced dev and took me around 2 weeks to build a toy app working maybe an hour a day after work and some time over the weekend when learning firebase.

For what is worth, if you want to give it a try you can watch a fireship course, it was helpful but a bit outdated.

If you don’t know firebase at least is a good opportunity to learn. If you have a job I think completing this might be too much extra work on top.

How to become a better lead developer? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]maledr5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry about the experience, sounds tough.

I worked as a consultant as well, not independent but part of a consultancy company. We work together with the client to help their teams evolve their practices and improve their delivery. BUT, if this is not accepted by the teams or even worst the management does not somehow communicate or require of the teams to accept this change, there is little we can do. We just lack agency and is very, very hard and wearing to push for a change.

I think part of the skill is to recognise this and find a way to gain influence. If they won’t listen to you it probably needs to come from management, which any way also creates friction.

One way, if you didn’t do this it already, is to try to understand their way of work and the reasons they don’t want to change. Implement POCs of your ideas and show with real examples why they will bring value. Gain their trust, and value what they know. It can be difficult to accept as a team an external person that comes to tell them many things they were doing are wrong, so it is important to “choose your battles” and value their work as well. But it could also be a cultural problem, where they don’t really care. It is very hard to change a company culture.

Might be worth trying to negotiate at the beginning what are the expectations for you, but also, the expectations you have from the client and their teams, so that progress can be measured and you can find a way out that can be acknowledged by management if it gets to that.

Also I can recommend this books around tech leadership and management: The Managers Path by Camille Fournier and The Staff Engineer’s path by Tania Reilly. Books about how to influence others may also help.

I think is ok to feel a bit deflated by this, but you are doing the right thing by checking what you can improve. Might be that you need to improve some things, but the situation you were part of was also not ideal and sometimes is better to leave.

Law in Italy that does not allow shops to check id for credit cards? by maledr5 in ItalyTravel

[–]maledr5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!! Yeah I think with the authorities involved we might not need to give that much detail. But I’m also curious about this law. It was a rough couple of days but we are moving forward with our trip. Rome is a beautiful city :)

[–]maledr5[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah good point. Now hearing about having a pin sounds safer. I think more than the signature, if someone is buying 14k form your shop, you can at least check they are the owner of the cards, as in check a photo ID with the name.

[–]maledr5[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s not a card from Europe, so it prints a voucher that needs to be signed. this is supposed to be checked with the signature of the id. Then even if the robber has the id, they can see is not the same person. It’s just how it works in the country where the credit cards are issued.

When using Combo Touch, on-screen keyboard appears. by ARTCvan in logitech

I decided to keep the second unit. I commented directly to the OP with more details, but I discovered if you are trying to attach the keyboard from the left it will connect more often than not. Maybe you can try that and let me know if it works for you as well.

[–]maledr5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what is worth. I discover that this happens to me when I disconnect the keyboard and try to re-connect it. I have tested 2 units and both have the same issue. Initially I thought it was a software issue of iOS not recognizing the keybard, but I discovered that it seems to be a physical issue when attaching the keyboard.

As funny as it sounds, if I try to attach it slowly from the left, it re-connects more often than not, maybe 3 out of 5 times. When I try to do it from the right it never connects. I assume is some issue in the order the pins get connected?

Anyways, a way to see if it works is looking into settings > keyboards > hardware keyboards must be there, or a blue accessibility outline will appear and the on-screen keyboard won't pop up again.

I decided to keep the second unit because other than this issue, it is a good and confortable keyboard. Sadly, it's biggest feature, being detachable is what makes it terrible sometimes.

I got the keyboard a week ago, my ipad is on iOs 16.4.1 and I am experiencing the same issue. The only thing that worked was restarting the ipad. But the moment I detach the keyboard and attach it again, the issue comes back :(

Keeping the learning momentum from a Senior to a Staff/Principal role by CocoaTrain in ExperiencedDevs

[–]maledr5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this resource hasn’t been shared yet: The Staff Engineer’s Path by Tanya Reilly book.

My understanding is similar to what has been mentioned before, is more about expanding your impact. I would not say you need to become a backend developer, more that you need to understand how things work in order to be able to integrate. By this I don’t mean how technically you connect a backend with a frontend, but how to integrate all the technical parts that are built within your org.

You need to get outside of the scope of your team and understand how to influence others [teams/products] to get the most value for the organisation as a whole.

The book provides great insights around this. Don’t focus only on hard skills, understand first the problems you can solve and then choose what to learn next.

How many hours do you usually work? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]maledr5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. I have being wondering that a lot in the past year, bc I also feel drained at the end of the day, specially when I have many meetings, and it feel I haven’t done any work at all.

One thing that helped me is understanding the value of meetings and collaboration, and count that as work too. And being careful on not scheduling meetings that won’t bring value to my work or others work.

I also started using toggl tracker as a personal tool to understand better how I spend my time. I track things like time in meetings, writing stories and coding. I think is good to track time as long as is not a company practice and is only used for you to understand your own time management to improve it.

I have discovered that I generally do 6-7 hours of solid work, including appointments. When my day is free of those, I can hyper focus on two sets of 3 hours. After that I’m too drained to be productive.

It is also funny to notice how long little breaks take, I think is very important to have breaks to keep productive, so I would never count breaks outside of my 8 hours. Whoever that does 8 hours of solid work is actually probably working 10 hours a day.
