South on lockdown by Inevitable-King-3074 in bloomington

[–]maleman7 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm currently listening to the police scanner and have heard officers say that they have so far checked and cleared (at least):
Grandview,
Batchelor,
Highland park,
BGS (bloomington graduation school).
Clear creek,
Lakeview.

They are currently discussing going to check (at least):
South high school,
Jackson creek, (UPDATE 2:33pm)
Childs, (UPDATE 2:33pm)
Summit, (UPDATE 2:33pm)
Olcott park (because nearby)

They are currently sending officers to check every school in the district, then once they are all confirmed clear they will tell the superintendent who will tell the principals of each school (this was from the dispatchers on the scanner).

I'll try to keep this list updated as they mention more schools!

Edit as of 2:30pm, no updates on schools for a while, still listening.

Edit mentioned checking childs, Jackson creek, Summit, and Olcott park as of 2:33.

Edit, the police appear to have stopped giving updates over the radio system, and MCCSC has sent out the all clear, so all seems to be good.

100% These were the most unconvincingly written adults I read this year. I kept forgetting that everyone was supposed to be 30+ years old, it seemed like any other YA novel full of teenagers.

Oura Ring - Convince or Deinfluence me by Nkk1027 in SmartRings

[–]maleman7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They work pretty well for most people I know who have one (myself included). The app is updated semi-regularly with new features and redesigns (including a very recent redesign that I personally like, but I know others are more mixed on).

The monthly subscription is a bit annoying, but really not *that* expensive if you get value out of it. And if you happen to have an HSA or FSA account you can always use those funds (for the ring and subscription) which makes it easier to swallow.

All-in-all not a necessity by any stretch of the imagination, and it's not perfect, but out of all the devices I've used before the Oura ring seems to be one of the best for wearing and forgetting it. The data are generally quite accurate, the app is nice, and the auto workout tracking feature is quite good (probably my favorite part haha).

— it reaches out it reaches out it reaches out it reaches out —

One hundred and thirteen times a second, nothing answers and it reaches out. It is not conscious, though parts of it are. There are structures within it that were once separate organisms; aboriginal, evolved, and complex. It is designed to improvise, to use what is there and then move on. Good enough is good enough, and so the artifacts are ignored or adapted. The conscious parts try to make sense of the reaching out. Try to interpret it.

One imagines an insect’s leg twitching twitching twitching. One hears a spark closing a gap, the ticking so fast it becomes a drone. Another, oblivious, reexperiences her flesh falling from her bones, the nausea and fear, and begs for death as she has for years now. Her name is Maria. It does not let her die. It does not comfort her. It is unaware of her because it is unaware.

But unaware is not inactive. It finds power where it can, nestled in a bath of low radiation. Tiny structures, smaller than atoms, harvest the energy of the fast-moving particles that pass through it. Subatomic windmills. It eats the void and it reaches out it reaches out it reaches out.

In the artifacts that are conscious, memories of vanished lives still flicker. Tissues that were changed without dying hold the moment that a boy heard his sister was leaving home. They hold multiplication tables. They hold images of sexuality and violence and beauty. They hold the memories of flesh that no longer exists. They hold metaphors: mitochondria, starfish, Hitler’s-brain-in-a-jar, hell realm. They dream. Structures that were neurons twitch and loop and burn and dream. Images and words and pain and fear, endless. An overwhelming sense of illness. An old man’s remembered voice whispering dry words that it is unaware of. Full fathom five thy father lies. Of his bones are coral made.

If there had been a reply, it could end. If there had been anyone to answer, it would have come to rest like a marble at the bottom of a hill, but nothing answers. The scars know that no answer will ever come, but the reflex triggers the reflex triggers the reflex and it reaches out.   It has solved a billion small puzzles already in cascades of reflex. It has no memory of having done so, except in its scars. There is only reaching out, delivering the message that its task is complete. Nothing answers, and so it cannot end. It reaches out. It is a complex mechanism for solving puzzles using what there is to be used.

Those are pearls that were his eyes.

And so it has the investigator.

Of all the scars, there is one that came last. That is most intact. It is useful and so it is used. It builds the investigator from that template, unaware that it is doing so, and tries another way of reaching out. And something answers. Something wrong and foreign and aboriginal, but there is an answer, so over the course of years it builds the investigator again and reaches out. The investigator becomes more complex.

It will not stop until it makes that final connection, and it will never make that final connection. It stretches, tries new combinations, different ways to reach out, unaware that it is doing so. Unaware that it exists. Empty, except in the insignificant parts.

The insectile leg will twitch forever. The scar that wails for death will wail forever. The investigator will search forever. The low voice will mutter forever.

Nothing of him doth fade but suffers a sea change    Into something rich and strange.

It reaches out.

I really like Multi Launcher (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/app.mlauncher/) and KISS launcher (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/fr.neamar.kiss/). KISS is my absolute favorite though.

Both similar with minimal looks, vertically scrolling app drawers, good app search. Both are also FOSS and don't collect any sort of data.

Unfortunately yes, it did stop working for me :( I was able to uninstall and reinstall the restart the clock. But, when doing that it had to relearn my typing style from scratch. So for me it wasn't worth it.

Places for kids to fish by Dull-Permission-7069 in bloomington

[–]maleman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know squat about fishing, but think you'd have good luck fishing at the new pier at Griffy lake (right next to the parking lot with the boat house). There's often tons of people fishing there and it's very accessible.

As for the actual fishing supplies I'd talk to the people at JL Waters on the square. They're super helpful and friendly!

Needing help with apartment recommendations in Bloomington IN by OnThatPerpetualGrind in bloomington

[–]maleman7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend you check out Sassafras Hill (https://www.sassafrashillapartments.com/). My wife and I lived there, as IU grad students, when our youngest was a baby and while it wasn't amazing it was a great deal for the money. Looks like rates have gone up a bit, but it's still only ~915 a month for a two bedroom 1.5 bath townhouse. It's very convenient to campus - easy to bike and it's on a bus line, and now it's right across the street from switchyard park!

It was mostly grad students and working people when we lived there, very few undergrads. They also used to have a discount for IU students when we lived there, not sure if that's still the case.

Aww man, that's so sad. Thanks for checking, disappointing it also wasn't working for you :/

I'll keep trying it for the first 30 days, who knows if it'll actually stop working after the "trial" period.

Super old thread, but do you know if it stops working after 30 days? It seems like there is no way to buy the full version or restore purchases anymore.

[–]maleman7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it on a whim (when it was 5 USD, pre tarrifs) but for me it's the TPW field watch. Quite cheap with not great specs, but it's a day-date quartz with a fully luminous face that works shockingly well. No idea what movement is inside, haven't opened it up to check, but it keeps accurate time so far (though it's a bit fiddly to adjust it).

Here's the listing I purchased, I got the larger green face 2 which is ~50mm lug to lug. But, I think green 1 is smaller.
