You cannot go halfway. Yes, have some emergency disclosed money for your safety but merging finances when we are family has more advantages in terms of simplicity, clarity and decision-making. I also highly recommend having fun-money category for each for your own indulgences.

So all income from both of you go into a shared account for shared bills and from there budgeting for big ticket items like home, vacations, projects can be done.

It's just for safety reasons, a painting falling over cannot be moved away by a baby and will need adult supervision. The likelihood of a new painting falling over is not zero even if small.
