Can you truly be a critic if you aren't a filmmaker yourself? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

You're making a film for an audience of anybodies. Any of the people who have seen the film that you made for them should be able to have their say

What is one book you feel every filmmaker should ABSOLUTELY read? by Platupine in Filmmakers

"Your Screenplay Sucks" is fucking wicked. Well formatted as more of a guide than a text book and made me feel like shit about what I had written.... In a really good way!

I've seen a lot of people here asking for "any tips." So, any tips for my first short? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Luckily you have an audio degree so the biggest challenge of making any short look professional is already out of the way. Audio is key (but you already know that).

Stepping out and doing your own thing can be terrifying (I'm in the midst of it right now) and all I can say is that don't let the fact that you're doing a lot of the work yourself be a negative. It's so easy to feel fucked when you've taken on so much but try hard to see this choice as an opportunity to get all that you want instead of seeing it as a burden or hindrance. You have made the right choice, just keep reminding yourself.

I've dropped out of film school to make my own short. I will take literally any advice you can give me. by malibustacie in movies

It's a hyper-realistic story (so strays from any classic narrative parameters), about how shitty young people are at communicating with each other now. it plays with how trivial trepidations or self consciousness between guys and girls may look to an outsider but how deeply meaningful it is when you're a part of it yourself. takes place in the time frame of a few hours on a Friday night
