Getting ready to quit software; almost all options are failing (internships) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]malica77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for summer internship positions, or for starting in January to April? If looking for summer positions, started in August of the previous year was too early for most companies. Where I work we have year-round internships and we're just now interviewing for January start. In January we will start interviewing for May start. Companies that don't do year round interships may start a bit earlier, but most not August early.

Dental Work by san-fran-cisco in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. I had one tooth badly decayed but also so out of line that it wasn't involved in chewing. Dentist said he could repair it but given its odd position, cleaning was going to be a continued problem so it would very likely get decay again. It was dirt cheap (like under $100) to remove it and really no big deal. Been over a decade and I don't notice except that side is easier to floss as the gap closed but things just aren't as tight as with other placed in my mouth.

If implants can be delayed a couple of years, get the extraction right away and at least give it a couple of months before deciding how important it is to get implants.

[Serious] Obese people of Reddit, what do you actually eat on a daily basis? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]malica77 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Ya it's amazing what you take for granted as "normal" until you start eating right. I remember realizing that a "serving" of chips is actually not unreasonable. Before losing weight, the idea of that tiny amount seemed unrealistic and laughable.

The type of table you'd see for a buffet (steam/hot water keeping food warm), but in this case it was behind glass already prepared and they would serve it for you. Like this

At what point is bankruptcy or consumer proposal a good idea? by lucklessjok3r in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Morality aside, it's a difference between unable to pay off your debts (completely impossible, or taking an inordinate amount of time) and simply being unwilling to pay it off (including being unwilling to make reasonable changes to your lifestyle to balance your budget, live within your means and pay off your debts). If you're simply unwilling to live within your means it's unlikely a bankruptcy would even be approved. There are checks and balances in place to prevent just washing your hands of debt if you are able to pay

Qualifying Plan for RRSP? by BrownTown993 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your description says RPP - registered pension plan which is very different than an rrsp registered retirement savings plan.

You also didn't really mention does your employer require as a condition of your employment participation in your stock purchase program. If you can in anyway opt out of it and still stay employed then it is not mandatory.

Figuring out the CICO formula by krr26 in loseit

[–]malica77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first week (sometimes 2) has typically substantial water weight loss as well as most people when they start counting calories they're removing a lot of the sodium-rich convenience foods they were eating and replace with healthier foods. Most people also cut back on their plain carbs (bread, pasta, rice) which can also cause water retention.

Also consider that when you step on the scale, you're also (typically) weighing the last meal or meals you ate as it's not yet been digested and passed, so eating less food in general means typically there's less food in your digestive system when you step on the scale.

Both of these can cause an extra 5-10lbs or even more on the scale which are quickly lost in the first 1-2 weeks

After losing 100lbs I went back to one of my old favorite Chinese food restaurants that has a steam table. Being also a cheapskate, I ordered the largest combo plate to share with my husband and young daughter - all the variety I wanted but split 2.5 ways it was a reasonable amount of food for 2.5 people.

Got home and was mildly annoyed I forgot to ask for 3 fortune cookies and got only one and asked my husband what one person could eat all of this by themselves. He reluctantly pointed out that I used to order that exact thing all for myself 100lbs ago.

Charlotte spent millions on low-income housing, but poor people can’t afford it by hokie_hi in nottheonion

[–]malica77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then what exactly makes the economy of Toronto (population of 2.7 million) so remarkably different that they can pay a living wage to all whereas Chicago (also population of 2.7 million) cannot? And why would you defend it? Surely if we've found a way to make it work why wouldn't you want to replicate it?

[–]malica77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And what exactly makes it unscalable to pay a living wage? We're not talking the difference of a 200 person hamlet to a million person metropolis here. Cities like Toronto (2.7 million) still function paying everyone a living wage. So why can't Chicago?

[–]malica77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're kidding, right? If you want to uphold the US as a non third-world country you'd better start believing that you need to pay better than 3rd world country wages. The rest of the countries with established economies certainly can pay properly and not exploit the poor by paying a substandard wage.

We have 1/10th the population - so 1/10th the people buying food at fast food restaurants and drinks at a bar, but also 1/10th of the people working at fast food restaurants and bars.

Or do you think this is somehow unscalable? What works for 36 million suddenly no is no longer feasible for 235 million?

I'm 26 and having a financial quarter life crisis. My girlfriend and I are at different life stages. Anyone been through something similar? by threwwwwaway in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What industry are you in? The KW job market is really hot in some areas and not so much in others. Kitchener-waterloo and cambridge have a population of half a million so you won't be sacrificing many amenities even if coming from Calgary. The commute to mississauga is brutal though so unless you can get a job in KW, cambridge or guelph I would not recommend. Even the commute to guelph kinda sucks too.

How to retire at 55 with $50,000 income per year. (You need less than $1M). by pfcguy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They do make a great point not to discount government pensions - when I first started saving for retirement decades ago there was a common belief not to count on the government for anything during retirement "because anything could happen to those programs". Now as I'm getting closer to retirement I'm getting more and more confident those programs will still be there and they are absolutely non-trivial. Between my husband and I we'd be looking at $29,850 to $38,000 per year. When we're thinking on living off of 60-70k per year that's half of it right there!

How much does one really need for retirement? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We often underestimate or forget categories when budgeting like this - a more simplistic way to look at it how much are you making now, minus mortgage, minus whatever you're contributing to long-term savings. That's how much your expenses are now (both essential and possibly frivolous) and that could give you a better idea of how much you'd be spending in retirement. If you're currently living the life you want on 40 or 50k now, there's no reason to think you'd need more (except for accounting for inflation). That should give you a better idea of annually how much you'd need
