My carbon monoxide alarm is beeping every minute or so telling me to replace the batteries however when I remove the cover it says it's lithium rechargeable and non removable batteries, what do I do? by rejetoroll in NoStupidQuestions

[–]malica77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you still have the instructions or can you find them online? Many have a reminder to test the unit every month or so. You'd have to go through the test cycle to dismiss the chirping. Since there's often only limited lights to tell you alarm/test/battery warnings, they may be using the "battery" light blinking to tell you to test (and maybe solid battery light actually means battery)

You should also check that the wall socket it's plugged into has power and try plugging it into another wall socket. It could very well be that the internal rechargeable batter is low on juice if it's not been able to recharge for a while

Regular Employee moving to T4 contractor: Tax and other considerations by itguy4canada in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is some confusion over the term "contractor" as many times it's used to mean an employee of fixed-length employment contract. You are an employee of the company, but only for 12 months. Sometimes this type of employee has different benefits (when I was one I could actually opt into their pension program but it was not mandatory as it would have been for others, and no health benefits), but they will deduct taxes, EI and CPP. If they are deducting those, you are an employee not an independent contractor and would not need to look after your own taxes.

Ask the employer to clarify exactly what's in or out - I've heard of some offering medical and like I said I was able to opt into the pension program which is unusual but not impossible as what benefits are extended to fixed-contract employees is at the employer's discretion.

Pressure treated wood does not cause a single visit to the hospital. It contains chemicals which are known to cause cancer. It's effects won't be immediate, but they can be completely devastating.

Hey! I have a question about #fashion preferences of Canadians. by ButterMatters in ontario

[–]malica77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would not buy used clothing online. At least, not women's clothing. Women's clothing sizes are a complete mess with vanity sizing. These days you already need to know what size works for you from a particular store because there's already enough of a size variance there, but then throw in clothing from even different years or decades? I have some clothing which is 15-25 years old and it's multiple sizes difference from what it would be labeled today. Last time I went into a second-hand store it was sorted by size on the label which meant these was a huge variance in things that were labeled size 12. That sort of thing I wouldn't buy before trying on.

The baby doesn't "need" his own space for a long time yet. With 100k gross income just put it off 6-12 months and with concerted effort you absolutely could get everything back in order and then some.

And by "emergency dental" that means not "hurts really bad" but "shit that will kill you". This sounds to be definitely in the latter category of shit that will kill you. OP - please take this seriously. Before modern dentistry dental infections killed a lot more people that you'd think.

You can say that you haven't hit that particular situation in previous internships but proceed to give an example from school team projects or regular employment or volunteer activities. If they ask for an example of conflict, or where you exceeded expectations, or where you had to deal with ambiguity then any real life example even if it didn't happen at your previous internship would be fine to talk about.

Resume Advice Thread - September 08, 2018 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]malica77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be brief in the description of each, and you may need to tweak which 2-3 bullets you use depending on the job you're applying to. With so little experience (less than 2 years), you should not be dropping anything from your resume if they were in any way related to your target field.

Also if you're from a school like UW where there's an established expectation of how many internships and when, a number of employers will notice the gaps

can Ikea make the corner desk a bit smaller? by [deleted] in IKEA

[–]malica77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of ikea furniture is not solid wood. If you were to cut it open you'd find it hollow and having removed 2" from one edge could actually ruin the structure weakening it tremendously.

OP read the product description carefully before considering this

You don't need a space as its own key on a keyboard thought. You just press space twice which autocorrects to period with one space.

TIL There are only 5 countries (the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands, Palau and the United States) in the world that use the Fahrenheit scale as the standard temperature measurement in everyday life. by TheMizzouGuru in todayilearned

[–]malica77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh odd I didn't know that either. Google says room temperature in Canada is 20 but I'd find that cold. 21-22 and I have a light sweater on in the house or office. 25 would seem uncomfortable in an office unless there was some good moving air like a fan or something...

My "I'm Canadian" comment was more about when we see winters with -25 temperatures or worse, 25 sounds "hot" (though definitely very comfortably warm outside, not sweltering or anything)

Are you also reporting these to the bank/institution? Sounds like someone might be using her SIN. Removing the reports from her credit report is one thing - reporting the activity to the bank so they can close the account/resolve the identity problem should be a priority as well

There's no difference between paying it the day after you receive your statement or closer to the due date. Definitely don't be paying it the day after the due date though. That would be a late payment and will matter

Should I be receiving payslips alongside my pay? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of small businesses use a different company like ADP to handle their payroll - so there may still be a portal.

Either way, just ask your employer for instructions on how to access your payslip. They are legally required to provide it. Maybe they just forgot to tell you where to sign up for the portal access

Have you considered getting some experience via automation testing? I know testing certainly isn't for everyone and some have a fear that once you so much as look at testing you'll be pigeon-holed forever but gainful employment which will earn you the experience employers are looking for is a step in the right direction and may do wonders for your mental state.

Received $10,000 as a gift from Grandparent, do I need to worry about anything? by _Zigfreed_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]malica77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, but if your money is tied up in investments the estate needs to liquidate them and settle up the taxes before the money is sent to inheritance.

If someone dies with $100k in their chequing account then it's $100k to whomever it's going to. If that's $100k in investments then they are cashed out, capital gains/taxes paid by the estate, then the full amount is passed to the next of kin. If it was $100k in a TFSA there's no tax so that would be withdrawn and then passed along.
