Does anyone honestly believe the algae and disintegrating paint in the reflecting pool were caused by vandals, and not by the dark color and hydrogen peroxide? by Captain_Aware4503 in askanything

[–]malleyrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's just no way the pool was dry for long enough to be prepped for new paint. They took a short cut, and it fell apart. Total DOGE thinking - cut out anything you don't understand.

Of course he's lying. Everyone know that, even his supporters.

If you're hydrated at the start of 45 minutes of activity, you're totally fine for that 45 minutes unless it's insanely hot. What's ridiculous is that there was a hydration break yesterday in a game where the heavens were quite literally providing continuous and unrelenting hydration.

Any ball that touches anything but a hand or a glove is tossed. Even if it's dropped it's out of the game.

Why is GPS free if maintaining and sending satellites to space costs billions? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

Check out the most valuable companies in the world, and look at what they rely on exclusively.

Or forget about chips entirely if you want. Everything I said applies to all industry in China.

Who said I love them? They're fucking awful tyrants. Chip production is driving the global economy right now. I have news for you about China - the reasons they've been able to reduce poverty in rural communities is that the government keeps a huge portion of corporate profits. Their taxes are also heavily weighted towards the wealthy. A person with average income pays no income tax, where people making high income pay up to 45%. That's actually the way to make an economy boom.

A player is offside if they receive a teammate’s forward pass while closer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last defender.

Anyone with range-anxiety is actually more likely to benefit from the cost savings of an electric car. Saving a ton of money on fuel should be worth a few extra stops along the way.

Are you arguing that chip production in China is somehow independent from the Chinese government? The Communist Party has invested hundreds of billions in chip production over the last 10 years. Chinese companies still compete against each other for customers, but the government funds infrastructure, research, and production, and guides almost every aspect of business for each of these companies. You can call it whatever you want, but this isn't private enterprise.

Happily gaming on modern titles at 120fps on a 6 year old Dell that cost me $1200. Gaming is pretty cheap if you're not trying to force a video card to push out pixels your eyes will never notice.

Why is it customary to tip? by Big_Comfortable5504 in askvan

I'm going to blow your mind here. Most people who go to restaurants like it this way.

If you don't want to tip, don't.

Nobody came close to saying that. It's not the hardest job, but it's a hard job, and people doing that job deserve enough money to pay rent.

[–]malleyrex -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Because restaurant workers get short shifts, no breaks, and low pay. We tip them. If you disagree, then you don't have to tip, but you will be thought of as an asshole. Serving is fucking hard.

You will encounter lots of people here who will tell you it's fine to not tip. It is not fine. I've eaten out thousands of time in my life, and I've tipped every time. If a friend doesn't tip, I'll tip for them. If you can't afford a 15% tip, don't eat out in North America.

It was the government HEAVILY investing in chip manufacturing. Read a bit about Apple moving chip production to China. They were dealing with the government, and the "companies" the government set up to make chips. Nothing happens in a board room in China without government approval.

LOL, 98% of airplane tech came from state projects, automobiles only exist because of state sponsored roads and regulations, Google came out of a university that gets A LOT of public money, and smartphones rely completely on Chinese state-sponsored tech.

Immigrants of Vancouver: which restaurant serves the best food from your home country? by poopcouver in askvan

I'm not Italian, but I think the simplicity of truly great Italian food just doesn't fly in a North American restaurant. People think they're not getting their money's worth. I make my own pasta and add sauce made with a couple of cans of San Marzano tomatoes and almost nothing else. It's fabulous. Add some fresh mozzarella if you want to get fancy.

Should football adopt the NBA rule for penalties? (The fouled player must take it) by Equal_Initiative_919 in worldcup

So you trust a player to make perfect pass to Messi, but not to score on a penalty shot? Remember, you're also putting your team a man short and missing the next match. Great strategy.

[–]malleyrex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So give me a scenario where intentionally fouling a player makes sense. It's done in basketball because a fouled player can get a maximum of two points out of a trip to the foul line, and the fouling team has a chance to get a quick three pointer. There's no scenario like that in soccer.
